Toyota GR Corolla 2023 first look preview: 300 hp vs Corolla
The Toyota GR Yaris may be the best performance car to come from the Japanese brand in years, but it’s a forbidden fruit in the United States. And the GR Corolla has finally been revealed to please Toyota hot hatchback fans. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla houses a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower, a GR-Four all-wheel drive system and an intelligent six-speed manual transmission.

Toyota Gazoo Racing has thrown all the racing-inspired engineering tricks into the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla, a car meant to deliver a powerful blow to the Honda Civic Type R. With its powerful engine, and Toyota’s first sporty 4WD system in decades . It’s called the GR-Four system, and the door sills are distinctively embossed in a nice little historic throwback to the GT-Four race cars of the ’80s.
The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is designed with a special multi-terrain system and quick adjustability. The standard setup distributes torque in a ratio of 60:40 front to rear, but it can be biased to the rear wheel by 30:70, or even 50:50. However, power to open differentials is fed as standard as part of the performance package.

Toyota GR Corolla 2023 exterior styling
The Toyota GR Corolla looks like the Corolla hatchback, with an open body. It is accompanied by intricate lines shapes to improve aerodynamics, as well as air ducts to cool the engine and brakes, and bold holes on the fenders to cover the wide tires. With a more aggressive look than the current Toyota Corolla.

When viewed from any vantage point, the exterior of the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla features eye-catching, functional touches. At the front, a unique matrix grille bearing the GR insignia, which tops the air ducts on either side. The Circuit Edition has a gloss black grille and integrated LED fog lights, but both models have LED DRLs. The bulging front and rear fender flares are hard to get past, and the 18-inch die-cast alloy wheels split into 15 narrow forks.
At the rear, the first element that catches your eye will be the triple exhaust pipes with stainless steel tubes. The design reduces exhaust pressure and outside noise, and a three-piece muffler with valves enhances efficiency. Both models have a lower back cover with functional air vents.

The latter model also features a carbon fiber roof. This roof is designed from a special mold that is extruded ‘molded’ with a carbon sheet molding system instead of the woven type, to lower the center of gravity further. While the aluminum hood and front door panels help offset some of the added weight of the all-wheel drive system.

The GR uses the same basic front strut and multi-link rear suspension as the standard Corolla, but is reinforced with coil springs and stabilizer bars to absorb shocks. The structure has been strengthened and more welding points are used. In general, a rigid platform allows for more precise tuning of the suspension, as there is less flex in the structure.
Toyota GR Corolla 2023 dimensions

Compared to the previous Toyota Corolla hatchback, the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is 1.5 inches longer and 2.4 inches wider. The wheelbase is 103.9 inches, but Toyota GR Corolla’s unique dimensions include a length of 173.5 inches, a width of 72.9 inches and a height of 58.2 inches. The empty GR Corolla weighs in at 3,249 pounds, 189 pounds more than the Corolla hatchback.
Toyota GR Corolla 2023 engine
A highlight of the GR Yaris is its powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which produces 261 horsepower. Likewise, the Toyota GR Corolla is the same engine but tuned to deliver an impressive 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. This power is transmitted to the GR-Four all-wheel drive system via a six-speed manual gearbox.

The G16E-GTS’s greater output is the result of improved exhaust efficiency with a three-piece muffler. Toyota didn’t provide any information on acceleration, but we do know that the less powerful GR Yaris can go from 0-60 mph in about 5.5 seconds, so the extra power and weight of the GR Corolla hatchback should put it back to similar or better performance specs. Also at this point, fuel consumption assessments will remain a mystery.

All that power is directed to all four corners via Toyota’s first high-performance all-wheel drive system in more than two decades. It was developed by the World Rally Championship team. Designed for racing, it is able to provide improved traction in bad weather, racetracks, and off-road. It contains several settings that the driver chooses to balance power distribution.

The Circuit Edition also comes with a Torsen limited-slip front and rear differential, enhancing performance and cornering stability. The wide tires enhance the driver-focused appeal of the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla; Both models are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. There is also a powerful brake system with fixed-caliper opposing disc brakes. Up front, there are 14″ x 1.1″ ventilated and slotted rotors.

The shift lever features a shorter stroke for faster throws.

The analog nature of the car is reflected in the use of a mechanical traction-type parking brake. A GR-specific sport steering wheel is standard on the Circuit Edition, which also has a Morizo gear knob inside . In addition to the lively feel of the Toyota GR Corolla’s interior, the seats are upholstered in Brin Naub suede and faux leather, with red stitching and red Circuit Edition mesh inserts.
