There’s another lower grille as well, which makes it a bit crowded, but it’s far from the ugly front. The 2022 Kia Sorento’s side look flows well, while the rear of the car also looks great, adorned with slotted rear headlights that give it a modern and unique touch.

The exterior design changes quite a bit depending on which model you choose, of course not much. Some trims add nice black accents, while others give you different bumper and wheel designs. I personally liked its exterior design.

Powertrain Options for the 2022 Kia Sorento

Sorento has a wide range of engine options and is available with front or all-wheel drive. Standard 191 hp 2.5 liter four cylinder engine, a 281 hp 2.5 liter four cylinder turbo engine is also available. Both are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The eco-friendly Sorento Hybrid features a combination of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine and a 44.0 kW electric motor that together generate 227 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid version features the same engine and transmission, but produces 261 horsepower combined and has a larger 66.9 kW electric motor that is only four-wheel drive. The hybrid model uses a six-speed automatic transmission.

Driving impressions of the 2022 Kia Sorento

We drove the SX Series 1 with its turbocharged all-wheel drive and appreciated its remarkable thrust, but we wish the powertrain would feel more responsive. I found it delivered balanced control, a well-isolated ride, and consistent brake pedal feedback. When equipped with the towing package, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

The 2022 Kia Sorento with the optional turbocharged engine is too fast for a small SUV. It can hit 60mph in just 6.7 seconds, and it’s not just the acceleration that impressed us, it’s also the way the power continues to build at higher speeds. For comparison, the 2022 Kia Sorento is about 3 seconds faster than a similarly sized Volkswagen Tiguan and even faster than the V6-powered Honda Passport.

Maneuverability and stability in the Kia Sorento 2022

Integration with express traffic is not a problem in Sorrento. Also impressive is the new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which can make semi-smooth shifts in slow-moving traffic or fully integrate.

The Sorento can slow down with confidence thanks to the well-balanced and intuitive brake pedal. The Sorento stalled from 60 mph, showed slight understeer and brakes in just 121 feet, which is better than average for the class. The handling is similarly confidence-inspiring, but we’d like to have more precision in the steering.

Interior Design for Kia Sorento 2022

The Sorento has many Kia features that are easy to use, and the interior is no problem. Visibility is also good thanks to the large windows, and good sight lines throughout the cabin. The optional surround-view camera system provides high-resolution images, and has proven to be useful in challenging situations.

Unlike the compact SUV classification, the Sorento offers plenty of room for adults in all three rows except for the rear area. You’ll also find more legroom in the second row than in custom two-row SUVs like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. But the third row is not hospitable to adults, and getting in and out of the 2022 Kia Sorento is easy.

The front seats in the car we tested offer heating and ventilation and a good range of tuning. The captain’s seats in the second row (the standard seat in the lower trim levels) were firm but more comfortable and supportive than the bench seats on other SUVs. The third-row seats are small and low to the ground, and the dual-zone climate control system is efficient and easy to use even if the touch-sensitive buttons aren’t as responsive as conventional buttons.

Riding comfort, noise and vibrations in the Kia Sorento 2022

Ride comfort isn’t quite as impressive, and a constant stream of tension runs into the cabin at low speeds. The Sorento’s large 20-inch wheels we tested may have been the culprit, and its low-profile tires cause road noise at highway speeds. On the highway, the Sorrento ride is well controlled, which exudes confidence and a sense of stability.

Technology in the Kia Sorento 2022

Our best-of-its-kind test vehicle was equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display with navigation, an upgraded Bose audio system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. I found the screen graphics to be crisp and imaginative, some on-screen buttons are a little bit relatively small, the Bose sound system is less impressive, and it didn’t give me a great sound to the music. The least impressive technology in the Sorrento is the regular voice command system, as it lacks flexibility and natural language recognition.

With eight USB ports plus a wireless charger, passengers never lack power for their devices. Smartphone compatibility is standard, and the Sorento’s advanced driver aids are impressive not only in terms of range but in application. We didn’t experience any false alarms, and with the exception of a very careful rear-traffic alert, we didn’t feel like complaining.

With infotainment and connectivity features, the 2022 Kia Sorento supports all your desired content. It comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen or an optional 10.3-inch touchscreen. Besides the wireless charging pad.

There’s just 12.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, slightly more than the Volkswagen Tiguan’s 12-cubic luggage compartment, while the larger Subaru Ascent offers up to 17.8 cubic feet. With the third row down, the Sorento offers between 38.5 and 45 cubic feet, that’s bigger than the roomy Toyota RAV4 and with all the seats folded, the Sorento takes in 75.5 cubic feet, which is the equivalent of a Honda CR-V.

Internal storage is a strong feature in the 2022 Kia Sorento. Although it lacks the cleverness of Honda’s CR-V and Passport, there are ample and well-thought-out storage options in all three rows.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the Sorento four-wheel drive with the turbocharged engine returns 24 mpg combined (22 city/27 highway), and when we tested it we got an average of 25.2 mpg over 115 miles. Equipped with a turbocharger, you do not need premium gasoline.

Value for the Kia Sorento 2022

As we’ve come to expect from Kia, the Sorento is well-appointed and well-built. Even with hard plastic parts scattered around the cabin, the Sorento has thoughtful details and luxurious touches throughout.

Even in the $44,290 SX Prestige X-Line, the Kia Sorento is still good value for money, though its price tag brings it closer to a larger, more capable SUV.
