2024 Mazda CX 90 25

The all-new 2024 Mazda CX70 five-seater follows the CX90

After Mazda revealed the new seven-seater CX90, it is expanding its SUV lineup to include a new two-row mid-size model called the CX70, which we will introduce to you in this report.

An all-new hybrid SUV, it is expected to be more luxurious than the brand’s smaller CX5 and CX50.

The three-row CX90 will hit US dealers soon, and the smaller CX70 will follow this year as well.

The upcoming CX70, arriving later this year, will ride on the Japanese automaker’s new longitudinal engine platform.

Mazda CX70 2024

  • Mazda 2024 belongs to the class of two-row mid-size crossover SUV, between the compact CX50 and the three-row CX9.
  • It aims to compete with cars such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Honda Passport, but also encroach into more luxurious areas where SUVs such as the Lexus RX are located.
  • It will share its platform and engines with the larger CX-90, meaning it will be rear-biased and have a four-cylinder hybrid and a mild-hybrid six-cylinder engine, but it will be smaller in size with two rows of seats.
  • The other part is that the CX70 will be in a segment where Mazda hasn’t competed very much. Expectations are that the closest car to it will be the CX7, which was discontinued in 2012, meaning it will fill a space in Mazda’s lineup that has been vacant for more than a decade.

Mazda CX70 2024 specifications

Hybrid 2024

Exterior design

  • Although Mazda hasn’t revealed the design of the upcoming car yet, we expect it to look similar to the CX60 for the European market but with a wider body.
  • We’re definitely curious to see how the CX70 will shape up, and whether it’ll be essentially just a shorter CX90, or maybe something a little more unique.

Interior Design

  • Moving on to the interior, we find a modern cabin that is nicer than many competitors at a similar price.
  • Its interior will offer more space than the CX5 and potentially offer premium materials such as woven fabrics, Nappa leather and wood trim to work together harmoniously making the dashboard design so attractive.
  • The CX70 will be a two-row model with space for five passengers on board, which will be controlled by a rotary knob in the center console.
  • Meanwhile we believe the CX70 will have a large 12.3-inch touch-sensitive central infotainment screen, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity features should be standard equipment.

Security and safety systems

  • In terms of safety and security equipment, most Mazda models offer a wide range of driver-assistance features as standard equipment, and we wouldn’t expect the CX70 to be any different.
  • The sports car will probably include the main standard safety features: lane departure warning and lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking.

Mechanical specifications

  • Although Mazda hasn’t revealed the CX70’s engines yet, it will likely use the same two powertrain options found in the larger CX90:
  • Option 1: A new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine, with support from a 48-volt hybrid system sandwiched between the petrol engine and transmission.
  • We don’t expect much from the CX70’s turbocharged inline-six, which means the smaller crossover should maintain 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.
  • There is also a second option: a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) drivetrain with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers a combined output of 323 hp and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.
  • It claims an electric driving range of 39 miles on a full charge thanks to a 17.8 kWh battery that debuted in the CX60 for the European market.
  • Both engine options feature a new eight-speed automatic transmission with both rear and all-wheel drive enabled, though the CX70 comes standard with the latter.
  • But we don’t know exactly which powertrain configurations will be standard and optional.

Mazda CX70 2024 price

  • Pricing for the 2024 Mazda CX70 has not been announced yet, but it is expected to offer a similar range of trim levels as other Mazda models.
  • We don’t know much about this model as it is still a bit vague, but we expect more details as the launch date approaches.
