Experience driving, reviewing and evaluating the performance and specifications of the Mazda MX-30 EV 2022 is fun but flawed
Range anxiety, and the fear of running out of battery while driving an electric car, is real. Studies show it’s a major concern among people considering EVs. However, the new 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV offers only about 100 miles of range, much less than its primary competitors, and even less than the majority of modern electric vehicles.

There are secondary climate functions, for the heated seats and steering wheel, and on the digital climate panel are touchscreens that I think can be too distracting for drivers.
Value for money Mazda MX-30 EV

The base Mazda MX-30 EV 2022 is priced at $33,470 and includes improved driving assistance and safety features, a nicer wheel finish, more infotainment functions, a premium audio system, and more. The MX-30 EV Premium Plus has paint and navigation at an additional cost, for a total price of $39,100.

Given the glossy paint quality of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV, the upscale interior, and the generous list of infotainment and safety features, this price tag is a real bargain.
But…
You can only travel about 100 miles on a full charge. This is the reason for the attractive price.

Mazda knows this is a limitation, which is why it plans to market the MX-30 EV as a stylish and affordable electric vehicle for urban and suburban use . The target customer is someone who travels little, or for close internal missions within the city. That’s why Mazda introduced the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV to easily accommodate this lifestyle.

Mazda says it takes less than 14 hours to recharge an empty battery with a home charger, a Level 2 home charger takes three hours, and a 50kW fast charger will take it from 20% capacity to 80% in 36 minutes.
The battery has a capacity of 35.5 kWh and supplies an electric motor that produces 143 hp (107 kW) and 200 lb-ft (270 Nm) of torque. Acceleration is fast, but less than a Tesla 3, and less than a Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Mazda is known for the fun and dynamic driving dynamics of its traditional cars. The MX-30 benefits from a lower center of gravity and improved weight distribution. With the automaker’s keen interest in tuning the details of the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV, to deliver a smooth, fast and sophisticated driving experience. If you are standing and surrounded by cars on both sides, using the MX-30 doors is a real problem. Its design is not suitable for tight parking spaces. Access to the rear seat is also restricted, and if you load people from the driver’s side, you will need to move the seat forward. The front passenger seat is manually adjustable.

Sitting at the front, you’ll find the spacious Mazda MX-30. When sitting in the back you will feel cramped, although the seat itself is comfortable, but the legroom is limited, so if the front seat passengers are tall, it is better to have small rear seat passengers. The Mazda MX-30 EV doesn’t have rear air vents or USB charging ports, either. But the backs of the rear seats are padded and comfortable for the knees and legs.
Storage space
Storage space is good, but access is not easy. From the driver’s seat, the padded tray under the center console control compartment is hard to see. And when you open the MX-30 EV’s hatchback-style luggage compartment, you’ll find a 21-foot cargo box, even more spacious thanks to the 60/40-folding rear seat.

The new Mazda MX-30 is equipped with the latest version of Mazda Connect, the automaker’s proprietary technology. The system combines an 8.8-inch fixed display with controls in the center console and steering wheel. The touch screen is not available, and voice recognition technology is not available either, unless you are connected to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone mirroring systems.

Also, while you can adjust the stereo volume using a dedicated knob in the center console or the buttons on the steering wheel, there is no comparable solution for changing radio stations. In our experience, this forces you to push and twist the Mazda Connect control knob multiple times to access your list of favorite stations.

Mazda Connect’s lack of a touch screen, useful voice recognition system, or the simple and logical interface of the modern BMW iDrive system is frustrating, so MX-30 owners should be sure to select their preferred settings first before driving the car. The Bose Centerpoint 2 12-speaker audio system is actually a premium sound system, but it’s not standard.

Mazda Connected services and the MyMazda smartphone app are standard. Free for three years, it allows the electric vehicle owner to pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin before driving, access the locks remotely, start and stop the vehicle’s charging remotely, set up automatic emergency calls to the emergency number, and enjoy a short free WiFi trial before you need to. Pay extra.
When you select the navigation system, the map screen will show you the nearby charging stations. You can find out through the smartphone app, and send directions to the MX-30 EV’s navigation system via the app.
Our test car also had a useful head-up display that showed a lot of information, including visual warnings for lane departures, alerts from other vehicles in blind spots, and a speed limit on a specific section of the road.
Specifications and safety factors in the Mazda MX-30 EV 2022
Mazda equips every MX-30 EV with i-ActiveSense, a technology from the carmakers’ group of advanced driving assistance systems known as ADAS.

The list includes features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist and blind-spot warning systems. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go is also standard, along with automatic high-beam headlights.

Adaptive front lighting is standard, accompanied by rain-sensing wipers, rear cross-traffic warning with automatic braking, and a panic button on the key fob. In very emergency situations, I haven’t tried it.
The Premium Plus package option adds the MX-30 EV with Active Blind Spot Assist and Forward Cross Traffic Alert. Both features are new to Mazda and debuted in our car. Additionally, the Premium Plus package contains a driver monitoring system, a surround-view camera system and front parking sensors to complement the standard rear parking sensors.
Yes, plenty of safety gear. But, how well do these things work?
While driving, we sampled as many ADAS features as we could safely, and they worked well. In particular, the slight vibration of the steering wheel indicating lane departure was effective, and the adaptive motion control system operated smoothly. Likewise, the forward cross-traffic warning system is perceptible, but its audible alert does not drive the driver into a panic situation. Basically, i-ActiveSense is running in the background and I’d recommend it, and I’d advise against turning it off.
Mazda MX-30 EV 2022 Review Summary
Competitors like the MINI Cooper SE have better EPA range estimates, and some, like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV, have more than double the range. And if you’re a member of the work-from-home club, the Mazda MX-30 EV will probably work better as a second vehicle rather than as the primary mode of transportation. Charge it every night using a standard power outlet, and it will serve you well as a daily driver.
