The Volkswagen ID.4 isn’t a particularly fun car to drive, but it’s easy to manage. This makes it well suited for purpose as a large family electric SUV.

As for driving position, let’s start with the good parts. The driving seat in the Volkswagen ID.4 is supportive, especially in the corners, and the manual controls are easy to use. The first version had no adjustable lumbar support, but we had no problems with the lower back.

The steering wheel also extends nicely up and down, and the digital instrument compartment moves with it so you can always see the screen. There is one foldable armrest attached to the driver’s seat. It’s not as comfortable as the wider center armrest you get on a Mustang Mach-E but it’s fine.

Ease of use is not good. There are no physical buttons and the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel are difficult to operate, and may be triggered accidentally. The same goes for turning on the air conditioning controls as well, and we see that the touch-sensitive sliders for the temperature settings are a pointless sight, and even make matters worse, they aren’t backlit, so there’s no hope of using them neatly at night. The BMW iX3 and Kia e-Niro are both much simpler to operate.

Vision, parking sensors and cameras

The Volkswagen ID.4’s highly tuned instrument panel is well designed, but those thick, sharply sloping front pillars are a nuisance. They block the end of the bonnet from the driver and isolate him from his immediate surroundings, like bulkheads.

As with the Mach-E, shoulder room is tight when you introduce a burly third passenger into the center rear seat. But they’ll have enough headroom, and thanks to the flat floor, they’ll have plenty of legroom, and you get map pockets and cell phone pockets in the back of the front seats. There are also two rear cup holders in the center armrest and usable door bins.
