Several cars have been awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2022 Safest Car Award.
For 2022, more than 50 vehicles have received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s highest honor, the “Top Safety Pick+”. The IIHS, funded by the insurance industry, conducts crash tests that include the driver’s side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side impact, roof strength, passenger side small overlap test and headrest test.
To earn a Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must have a good rating in all six of these tests, a good or acceptable rating for its headlights, and an advanced or superior rating for its crash prevention systems. All the cars on this list won the 2022 IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ award. We arrange them according to their English names, i.e. the order of the English letters as follows:

Acura TLX
The 2022 Acura TLX received good or superior marks in almost every test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Modern Road Safety on the Acura. To give it the safest ride, every Acura TLX comes standard with LED headlights with low and high beam.
IIHS testing showed that the low beam pattern wasn’t bright at all for oncoming traffic, and the high beam helped boost output while driving. The TLX comes with driver-assist technologies such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitors, and rear cross traffic alert.
Audi A6 and A6 Allroad
The comfortable-ride Audi A6 and its Allroad Wagon counterpart earned a spot on our pick for 2022 due to its smooth powertrain and high-tech cabin. Just as it earned the title of the safest car, the Audi A6 also turned out to be very safe. The A6 Allroad scored slightly higher than the regular A6 sedan in testing, but the rest of the scores were nearly identical.
The A6 Premium got an acceptable rating because its LED headlights weren’t as powerful. During the roof resistance test, IIHS applied a 22,702-pound mass test to an A6 roof to make it crush the five-inch standard. This is exceptional and means that the A6 and A6 Allroad have a strength-to-weight ratio of 5.39 for their roofs.
Audi A7
The Audi A7 is very similar to the Audi A6, except that it is bigger and faster, and being a hatchback makes it a luxury four-door car. The A7 received good and superior ratings in almost all IIHS tests, and won the Safest Car award, with an acceptable headlight rating.
Although all Audi A7 models come with low and high beam LED projectors, the lights do emit some glare, and it was this glare that kept it from getting a good rating.
Genesis G70
Skeptical about the low-cost luxury sports sedan from Genesis? Perhaps the ‘Top Safety Pick’+ will put those concerns on ice. The G70 got good or superior ratings in all crash tests and headlight measurements, but it fell short with child seat latches that are somewhat difficult to use. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said the lower stabilizers were too deep in the seat.
Which makes maneuvering around it difficult. We’ve noticed that the rear seat space is tight on the G70, but its balanced chassis and driving feel at a base price of $37,000 is an unbeatable bargain. The G70 also comes with more standard driver assistance technologies than many of its competitors. With automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control all are standard features.
The Genesis G70 avoids the risk of all frontal crashes, as well as pedestrian collisions at 12 and 25 mph. During a pedestrian test at 37mph, the G70 dropped to 4mph in just under a second. It has a powerful braking system.
Genesis G80
The Genesis G80 doesn’t just look luxurious, it holds the title of safest car, and the mid-size luxury sedan also took IIHS top honors in almost every category, although the headlights and LATCH system are easy and quality, but I got acceptable ratings.
Genesis G90
The Genesis G90 aims to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz S-class, Audi A8 and BMW 7-series, none of which has been named the safest vehicle, in terms of safety choices, and the Genesis G90 has been awarded the highest scores for its crashworthiness, collision avoidance and mitigation collision.
It received an acceptable rating due to the difficulty of using the child seat anchors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the low and high beam headlights on the G90’s standard LED projector as good.
Honda Accord
Among the safest vehicles, the Honda Accord received the highest score in the IIHS crash prevention and avoidance tests. The child seat anchors get a good + rating.
As for the easy-to-find latch positions. The Accord LX and Base Hybrid received an acceptable headlight rating, likely because their high beam uses halogen reflectors instead of the standard LED reflectors on all other cars.
Honda Civic Sedan and Hatchback
Honda Civic achieved the highest scores in tests for both its sedans and hatchbacks. Both were dubbed the safest cars, and Honda’s latest generation compact car recently took a gold medal in a comparison test with six other cars.
In fact, it added a touch of fun to driving and its well-designed cabin. Civic proves that safety and fun behind the wheel can live in harmony. Honda Civic has won numerous awards from different quarters around the world and has built a long history of reliability.
Honda Insight
Although the Honda Insight is similar in size to the Civic, it scored higher overall than the larger Accord’s test scores at IIHS, and won the title of the safest vehicle. Every Insight comes standard with low and high beam LED headlights . The plug-in hybrid sedan scored well or outperformed in every IIHS test. With a +good rating for easy to use child seat anchors.
All models have agency award qualifications and safety and security organizations, so buyers don’t have to pay extra for the bundle of security options that Insight offers. We’ve lived with Insight since 2019 for 40,000 miles during a long-term road test. And they turned out to be the safest cars by nature. And you don’t need more security options.
Kia K5
The Kia K5 received good and superior ratings from IIHS in almost every category tested, except for the ease of use of the LATCH system, which received an acceptable rating. This rating also applies to the standard LED headlights of the mid-size sedan. And one of the safest cars.
Models with the higher-spec GT-Line Premium package, in the GT-Line with all-wheel drive, or the GT model with the GT1 package get good reviews.
Kia Stinger
The Kia Stinger rear-wheel drive tailgate performs well in every IIHS crash-resistance test. Which gave it the title of the safest cars.
Surprisingly, the standard LED headlights for the GT-Line and GT1 get a good rating, while the upgraded GT2 headlights get an acceptable score. Those with young children may want to avoid the Stinger, as the ease-of-use function of the LATCH function on the model has been rated by IIHS. In a way that removes their fear of those safer cars.
Lexus ES
Lexus’ mid-size ES may not be the most exciting car in its lineup, but it’s one of the safest. IIHS ranks sedans in all its major categories,
With the vehicle-to-pedestrian crash protection test saved, the Lexus ES received the second best advanced rating. To put it on the list of the safest cars.
Lexus IS
The Lexus IS received a major safety upgrade for models manufactured after June 2017. Lexus modified the footrest and reinforced the front and doors of the car. These changes translated into good ratings for IIHS crash tests across the board.
Oddly enough, the standard IS headlights rated higher than the optional Premium Triple-Beam LED projector headlights. According to the headlight distances measured by IIHS, the output of the triple beams was not significant.
Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback
The Mazda CX-5 sells three times as many units as its fun-to-drive Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback, but a comparison of IIHS ratings reveals that the Mazda 3 is actually marginally safer than its SUV sibling.
Mazda scored good and superior ratings in all crash tests, but scored higher for its ability to avoid frontal collisions with pedestrians, and for ease of use of child seat anchors. This places it among the safest cars.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan
The Mercedes E-class sedan is available in many flavors, from luxury models bearing the Benz badge to AMG sports models. And no matter how you get your Mercedes E-Class, you get a four-door with IIHS Top Safety Pick + rating.
There are a few areas where Mercedes could improve on this model, with standard LED headlights getting an acceptable score (optionally available car units get a good mark). Likewise, the standard frontal collision system is rated essential in the vehicle collision avoidance test. However, the car’s optional setup received a superior score.
Nissan Altima
People who rent cars from Hertz will take comfort in knowing that the Nissan Altima earns a Top Safety Pick+ mark. And it is one of the safest cars, with high ratings,
Only the Altima’s headlights got a less than good rating, as both the car’s standard halogen projector units, as well as the upgraded LED units, were considered acceptable only by IIHS.
Nissan Maxima
The Nissan Maxima has earned the highest scores in IIHS safety tests, with headlight performance being the only exception. The vehicle’s standard LED modules received an acceptable rating.
Subaru BRZ
The Subaru BRZ is an absolute riot, the safest sporty car. There, she won many awards with us and entered the top 10 list.
And far from it. It’s also perfectly safe, it has top marks in all IIHS test categories, and it offers the ease of use of the LATCH, but you’d be hard-pressed to get a child seat in those tiny back seats anyway.
Subaru Cross-Strike Hybrid
The only Subaru Crosstrek to earn the title of IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ is a hybrid model priced at $37,520. That’s thanks to the fact that it comes standard with the brand’s active safety features like EyeSight, a technology that helps it get superior ratings in the vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-pedestrian crash prevention test.
Subaru Legacy
Every Subaru Legacy comes equipped with low beam and high beam headlights with an LED projector. While the Legacy received good and superior ratings in all six crash tests and crash prevention tests, IIHS noted that during the passenger-side small overlap test, the dummy’s head was weak after slipping into the gap between the front and side airbags. It was given an acceptable rating for this particular rating.
Subaru Outback
The Subaru Outback is essentially a tougher wagon version of the Legacy. As expected, the security ratings of the two models are identical.
Tesla Model 3
The Tesla Model 3 received good ratings in all six IIHS crash tests, including superior ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle collision avoidance and pedestrian avoidance, and an advanced vehicle-to-pedestrian avoidance rating. However, IIHS found that the LATCH child seat anchors were causing some inconvenience and gave the Model 3 an acceptable rating in that category. But it did not affect my placement among the safest cars.
Toyota Camry
While every Toyota Camry is a Top Safety Pick+, the Hybrid XLE with adaptive headlights is the safest of the bunch. While other Camry headlights earn acceptable ratings, the adaptive units available on the Hybrid XLE were the only Camry lighting system that gave IIHS a top good mark.
Toyota Corolla sedan and hatchback
The Toyota Corolla is a car with a long history, issued in compact sedan and Ice hatchback form and has passed IIHS safety tests in almost all categories except for one: the headlights. The Corolla’s standard LED headlights get a marginal rating, while the headlights for higher-spec models are acceptable.
Toyota GR86
The Toyota GR86 is a twin of the Subaru BRZ. As expected, the IIHS ratings for the GR86 are identical to those of the BRZ.
Volvo S60
The Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid electric variant of the V60 wagon was introduced in the 2020 model year. Beginning with 2021 models, plug-in hybrid electric variants for the S60 sedans and V60 wagon are known as the S60 Recharge and V60 Recharge. The passenger-side small overlap front ratings are determined by the institute based on testing conducted by Volvo as part of the front crash test validation.
If we can recreate how the Volvo crane test looked, we think something like this might have happened, yes it passed in the 60’s with that test. Not surprisingly, the S60 was rated Very High Security by the EIA before IIHS after undergoing testing like this. The S60 and S60 Recharge scored well and excelled across the board, with an acceptable rating for child seat stabilizers. IIHS deemed that the anchors for child seats are easy to find, but also difficult to maneuver.
Volvo S90
The Volvo S90 does most, but not all, things well according to IIHS. While the vehicle-to-car collision mitigation technology earned Volvo a superior rating, the vehicle-to-vehicle transfer technology scored the highest advanced mark. The large sedan headlights and LATCH stabilizers were also less than good, and instead of It earned acceptable ratings.
Volvo V60 Cross Country
The Volvo V60 Cross Country is a tougher wagon version of the S60. As expected, the IIHS ratings for the V60 are identical to those of the S60.
Volvo V90 Cross Country
The Volvo V90 Cross Country is a tougher wagon version of the S90. As expected, the IIHS ratings on the V90 are identical to those on the S90.
