The 2022 Subaru Impreza Sedan Experience: Quality Where It Matters
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the 2022 Subaru Impreza, but the Japanese automaker is starting the celebrations early. In Japan, a new special edition honors 30 years of the car that produced one of the most legendary racing cars of all time. The special edition was called 1.6 iS EyeSight in black and is available in sedan and hatchback variants.
The 2022 Subaru Impreza is a far cry from its sibling, the Subaru WRX STI, but it still shares features such as the engine, its famous all-wheel drive system, and its handling and handling characteristics. Unfortunately, the Subaru Impreza sedan has been undercut with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers just 152 horsepower, and an idle CVT transmission. On the plus side, this car is relatively fuel efficient, rides well, and the cabin is good. One of the main competitors of the Subaru Impreza 2022 is the Honda Civic sedan.

The 2022 Subaru Impreza Special Edition stands out from the regular edition thanks to 17-inch dark-alloy wheels, black roof spoiler and darker black door mirrors. and grille, giving the Impreza a sporty look.
The Special Edition of Japan’s Subaru Impreza is powered by a 1.6-liter engine that generates 113 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque, which can be sent to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission. Our review will be limited to the sedan version. For 2022, we will soon provide a review of the hatchback.

Is Subaru Impreza sporty?

It’s not a WRX, but the 2022 Subaru Impreza Sport definitely wants you to think it’s as sporty as the WRX. It doesn’t focus on paddle shifters, is equipped with a CVT transmission, and has features like the sporty’s torque-guided drivetrain and tuned suspension featuring Stablex dampers. And 16- or 17-inch wheels with 205-wide narrow tires, the 2022 Subaru Impreza Sport models get thicker tires. For the 2022 Subaru Impreza Sport, a short-range STI transmission is allocated for faster shifts.
The exterior design of the Subaru Impreza 2022

The exterior design of the 2022 Subaru Impreza won’t impress you in the same way that a WRX STI would, but it’s fairly handsome. The base model features 16-inch steel wheels, which grow to 18-inch alloys on the Sport model. Halogen headlights dominate the lineup, with LED units with responsive steering technology exiting the lineup along with the defunct Limited trim. The power tilt and sliding sunroof is an optional extra feature on most models. Seven exterior colors are offered, and Sapphire Blue Pearl is new for 2022.
Dimensions of the Subaru Impreza 2022
The 2022 Subaru Impreza is classified as a compact sedan and shares its dimensions with vehicles such as the Honda Civic Sedan. The 2022 Subaru Impreza is 182.7 inches long, 70 inches wide and 57.3 inches high. The Japanese sedan’s weight starts at 2,976 pounds for the base model, and increases to 3,142 in the Sport class.
Engine and transmission in the Subaru Impreza 2022
There is only one word to describe the powertrain of the Impreza Sedan: disappointing. Subaru, a company known for its signature turbocharged engines, grounded the Impreza sedan with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that puts out 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission on the base model or a continuously variable transmission for the entire range.
This powertrain offers poor performance. The CVT kills all the engine’s power, and the five-speed transmission is only marginally better at accelerating the Impreza. With a manual transmission, it accelerates in 7.5 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph, and the top speed is not worth mentioning.
Driving impressions of the 2022 Subaru Impreza
The 2022 Subaru Impreza partially makes up for its lack of power with a finely balanced chassis and an entertaining drive. It’s able to paddle lightly and comfortably without getting bogged down, cuts corners perfectly and is stable in turns, and absorbs small road imperfections at low speeds. Make a bunch of turns and corners, and you’ll be surprised how little the body rolls. On top of that, the standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system keeps things predictable and provides plenty of stability during bad weather.

Sport models also benefit from Active Torque Vectoring, which applies braking force to the inner front wheel, resulting in better control, sharper turns and overall better cornering performance. As with most cars in this class, the electric power steering lacks feedback but is precise enough.
Fuel economy of the Subaru Impreza 2022
The 2022 Subaru Impreza delivers some impressive petrol mileage numbers, especially for a permanent all-wheel drive vehicle. The EPA rates that the 2022 Subaru Impreza Sedan will achieve 28/36/32 mpg city/highway/combined, and when a CVT automatic transmission is installed.

That number drops to 27/36/30 mpg for the Sport model due to its larger wheels. The five-speed manual causes a huge drop in economy with just 23/31/26 mpg. As for its 13.2 gallon gas tank, the Impreza can cover between 343 and 409 miles in a single volley.

Subaru Impreza Sedan 2022 problems

Reliability wasn’t a major issue for the Subaru Impreza sedan: The car was recalled only once in 2021. In this case, models with CVT transmission had a problem with the lever cable nut not being tightened properly. Since then, no recalls have been issued for any of the 2022 models.
Maintenance and warranty expenses for Subaru Impreza 2022
Subaru will cover the 2022 Subaru Impreza Sedan with a three-year/36,000-mile base warranty and a five-year/36,000-mile drivetrain warranty.

Giving it good ratings for categories like driver-side frontal impact, moderate frontal overlap, side-impact and roof strength tests, for its part, ranked IIHS as one of the 2021 Top Safety Picks. Neither agency has rated the 2022 Subaru Impreza yet, but the results should be similar to the model. 2021.
Active Safety Features of the 2022 Subaru Impreza
Active safety features don’t become standard even on premium models, but are available as an option for the 1 Series. Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist technology suite adds automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring. Rear automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams are standard on the Limited model and available on the Impreza Premium.
Basic Safety Features of the 2022 Subaru Impreza

The base model features seven airbags, cruise control, a rear-view camera, and other essentials like ABS and traction control. All CVT-equipped models also receive standard pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane departure warning, and lane assisted sway warning. All models also feature permanent AWD.
Quality Subaru Impreza Sedan 2022
The 2022 Subaru Impreza Sedan is missing out on a dull engine and CVT for underperformance, and competitors such as the Honda Civic’s small-capacity turbocharged engine are much more desirable. Other than the powertrain, Subaru offers a pretty impressive package. It has impressive driving characteristics. Good interior design, comfortable and convenient; A lot of good standard features to boot.

Trunk space may not be amazing, but it’s enough for your everyday needs, the infotainment system is impressive and easy to use, and the long list of standard driver assistance covers the CVT effect.
Compare the price of the Subaru Impreza 2022
The cost of the Subaru Impreza starts at $18,795 for the first class. The Premium class is priced at $22195, while the Sport model is priced at $23,595. A fully-equipped car can cost you more than $35,000.
The Subaru Impreza 2022 stands out from its competitors
Comparison of the Subaru Impreza Sedan and the Subaru Crosstrek
The Crossstroke shares its base engine with the Impreza sedan. Due to its slightly heavier weight, it performs worse than the sedan and makes it less fuel efficient as the 28/33/30 mpg city/highway/combined CVT-equipped models. However, you can at least get a six-speed manual transmission option which is much better than the Impreza’s five-speed automatic. For an additional cost, the Crossstroke can also be customized with a more powerful 2.5-liter engine.

The Crossstrike has an elevated riding position, making it a more realistic off-road companion, and can tow up to 1,500 pounds. Inside, the Crossstroke also offers more room for passengers. In terms of features, both the Crossstroke and the Impreza share the same features, which makes the buying decision a bit easier. The 2.0-liter will never win a race, so does the more practical Crossstroke, albeit slower than the Subaru Impreza sedan, or if you want to spend more on the fuel of the 2.5-liter Crossstroke.
Comparison between Subaru Impreza Sedan and Subaru Legacy
The Legacy is an important step that surpasses the Impreza sedan in almost every way. Starting at the hood, the Legacy gets a more powerful engine, a fierce 2.5-liter boxer engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet. The best thing is that this engine delivers more or less gasoline mileage like the slower Impreza. The Legacy is also available with a 2.4-liter flat-turbocharged engine that produces 260 hp and 277 lb-ft with some sporty driving dynamics.

On the road, the Subaru Legacy is the most fun car to drive, and it’s also more refined. The extended wheelbase provides more room for passengers. The Legacy is better with the idle powertrain under the hood, when on the road and in the cabin as well. If you can afford the price jump, we recommend heading to the Subaru Legacy.
