Top 3 Subaru engines

Subaru marked a historic era made by the well-known Subaru engines

Subaru is a widely famous brand all over the world. It is a pioneer in the use of all-wheel drive, and one of the few manufacturers to use very powerful boxer engines, such as Porsche. But its greatest success is due to the Impreza WRX and the victories of this legendary car in the world of rallying. It’s a name engraved in automotive history, like the initials STi in its most extreme version.

Today we review 3 engines that marked Subaru’s history, starting with this legendary car.

The Impreza WRX STi EJ20 engine is one of the most famous Subaru engines

The STi version of the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Boxer and was producing 280 hp for the Japanese market. But of course we’re talking about 2004… And Japanese car experts know that this number of horses is no accident. It is one of the legendary Subaru engines.

In the same year, Itaru Koeda, president of JAMA (Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association) announced the end of the famous “gentlemen’s pact” for limiting energy. The US version of the 2004 WRX STi featured even more power, based on Subaru’s powerful engines.

As of 2006, North American countries received an update to raise Subaru’s engines up to 2.5 liters, while retaining the 280 horsepower of the JDM version. Dedicated to Japan, of course, is always paired with an all-wheel drive, six-speed gearbox and Subaru STI turbo engines.

Subaru’s engines include the EJ20 engine, known to fans of the turbo version as EJ20T (which is not an official designation), and production of these engines from Subaru ended in 2019 after Subaru announced the discontinuation of production, which led to the exclusion of this symbol from the streets and racing.

Subaru BRZ FA20 engines

It was listed as one of the best engines of the time and put into an amazing car: the Subaru BRZ, sister to the Toyota GT86. This naturally aspirated 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine was developed in collaboration between both brands. Subaru and Toyota. It is one of the giant engines of Subaru. Its block is made of aluminum, with a dual DOHC camshaft system and cylinder head signed Toyota Technology, as is Toyota’s signature D4S direct injection system, too.

Later, advanced variants of the famous engine arrived, equipped with a turbocharger, such as the FA20DIT, FA20F and FA20E, with the injection system from Subaru. The FA20DIT, in particular, includes a Garret MGT2259S turbo with a pressure of up to 1 bar.

They’re easily upgradeable and modified engines, and it’s not uncommon to see many Subaru BRZ or Toyota GT86 cars with up to 300 horsepower, even on the turbocharged versions with high-performance kits. It is reported that BRZ will not land markets in Europe.

EJ257 Boxer Engine, EJ’s Latest Bet

This is the latest engine to integrate the Impreza WRX STI engine in the US and Europe, with other models such as the Subaru Outback or Forester. And we are talking about a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Its best performance is found in the 2019 version of the American WRX STi, with 346 hp and 450 Nm of maximum torque. In the European version of the car, production is limited to the engine with 280 hp and 392 Nm of torque due to environmental restrictions to comply with EU regulations. It is currently the most advanced engine for the brand and its future in many models.
