Porsche’s range of SUVs started with the mid-size Cayenne, but the compact 2023 Porsche Macan offers a more vibrant aid to the brand’s sporting spirit, while still providing more space for people and cargo than sports cars. Available with a standard turbocharged four-cylinder, but the mid-range S and high-spec GTS models come with significantly more powerful twin-turbo V-6s.

When we reviewed the 2022 Porsche Macan compact crossover, we described it as “a super hot hatchback rather than a family pickup truck.” We stand by this if you choose the powerful 2023 Porsche Macan S 2.9-liter V6 twin-turbo or the more formidable 434-hp Porsche Macan GTS.

However, Porsche’s choice of a less turbocharged four-cylinder engine could be an informed choice because for the 2023 model year, Porsche toned down the engine power in the new Porsche Macan T model, the same 261-horsepower four-cylinder engine as the base model, but leaned heavily. To improving its corner-carving and cornering ability, making it a perfect contender for the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Jaguar F-Pace, of course the 2023 Porsche Macan T won’t be available for a while.

The exterior upgrades are low-key but impressive for the 2023 Porsche Macan T. The front cladding and rear spoiler are painted Agate Gray, as are the new 3D side blades. The front end has also been changed by adding three-dimensional elements to the air intakes, heated side mirrors and folding SportDesign branding.

The 20-inch dark titanium wheels with monochrome decals highlight the minimalist style and pair well with the painted tail, and the headlights are LED painted Jet Black Metallic. A lower exterior trim package adds color effects, and the overall effect of the 2023 Porsche Macan is sharp but low. Of course, you can change that up with more vibrant paint options.

Options start with the 2023 Porsche Macan T – and to increase cylinders and power the 2023 Porsche Macan S has been fitted with it. However, the engine does send a lot of power, and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 5.8 seconds doesn’t tell the whole story. Full torque comes in at 1,800 rpm, while the engine reaches maximum horsepower at 5,000 rpm. As a result, it improves handling around the city and can easily switch between comfortable cruising into busy back streets or out into heavy traffic. On the highway, whether you’re moving slowly or hitting the speed limit, you’ll never feel stressed out.

The suspension and drive systems of the Porsche Macan T 2022

Porsche has improved the suspension and all-wheel drive system for the 2023 Porsche Macan T. All-wheel drive is standard but has an increased rear bias. Suspension upgrades come courtesy of an active suspension system that replaces the base model’s steel spring-mounted. The 19-inch wheels have been replaced with standard 20-inch units in Dark Titanium.

The Porsche Sport Chrono Package is also included, which means the addition of Sport and Sport + modes, the car starts with individual launch control modes, and the Sport Power Boost takes 20 seconds. As with any Porsche, the hallmark of the Sport Chrono Package is the addition of a dashboard-mounted stopwatch.

Driving impressions of the Porsche Macan T 2023: Controlled fun

The 2023 Porsche Macan’s six-cylinder engine is a fierce little compact car, but the four-cylinder lacks the drama, acceleration and top speed of the S and GTS models. That’s to be expected, but the four-cylinder engine is still a fast, fun, and more economical one that’s befitting a hot, powerful car. That is why the Golf GTI and Golf R use this engine in different cases of harmony.

I tested the Makani T on the highway and it soaked up the bumps and clumps, and it was fun zipping along the long winding roads at a fast, measured pace where I just enjoyed the drive, and the passenger could have fun too. The steering wheel was lighter in weight than most Porsche fans would appreciate, with less feedback from the brand’s sports cars.

The lightweight engine up front and AWD tuning translate into more cornering and direction-changing passion, adding to the fun factor. The accelerator pedal was responding well and maintaining traction, and needed extreme sensitivity in narrow roads for the power of the car.

In addition to its versatility on asphalt, the Porsche Macan T also has some lower grip pieces like the Off Road button. When depressed, the car lifts through the air suspension by a few inches, and the all-wheel drive system is more inclined to split torque more evenly from front to rear. I took it on unpaved road and slippery areas, rough roads, maybe I did it with overconfidence that’s not where it is, but it didn’t let me down and it got softer in the sandy area. This means that there is no reason to be afraid of adverse weather conditions, as it has been equipped.

Reasons for driving quality in the Porsche Macan T 2023

Body control is the standout aspect. The Macan works without the 48-volt active anti-yaw suspension technology for younger SUVs, but the way it maintains momentum, avoids bumps and controls its wheels on road imperfections is still amazing. There’s agility, and the four-wheel drive is clearly felt and skewed to the rear, but it balances the mid-corner, giving you the same sheer road comfort feeling you’d find in a larger Land Rover or Range Rover.

Fuel economy and MPG in the real world

According to the EPA, the Macan’s most fuel-efficient, class-less engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is rated for 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6, both the Model S and GTS are rated 17 mpg city, but the Model S manages to get a 23 mpg highway rating versus the GTS’s 22. And when driving at 75 mph, the Macan Model S delivers 26 mpg.

Interior design of the Porsche Macan 2023 cabin: where all the sport

Entering Porsche makes you feel right at home. The Macan T’s interior trim package is a mix of leather and Sport-Tex striped materials, some of which uses Race-Tex-like leather on the steering wheel and headliner. The sports seats are also eight-way adjustable and are comfortable for spending hours on the road. It offers three-zone climate control as standard, and reasonable rear legroom, and kids will love taking advantage of the third zone. With a 10.9 inch entertainment screen.

The Macan’s standard interior fittings are a disappointment for this price and tag, and it’s a good idea to outfit them in a way that matches the Porsche logo. The passenger space for the back seat is less than most competitors. The comfort, electrically adjustable seats for driver and front passenger remain the only pieces that feel luxurious. Yes, the entire interior is covered with leather, but it partially solves the problem.

Notorious Porsche is asking for an extra $2,230 to cover the dashboard and doors in cowhide. The cargo van and small interior compartments make the Macan one of the least practical vehicles in the segment. But when was buying a Porsche a rational choice? You can put six handbags in the luggage compartment, and 16 with the rear seats folded, which is enough space.

Porsche’s infotainment system can be had with all kinds of high-tech features, but it’s going to cost you. USB and 12V outlets are scattered throughout the cabin, so everyone will be able to keep their devices fully charged. Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay come standard, but there’s no Macan that offers Android Auto.

Problems and weaknesses of the Porsche Macan T 2023

While handling and refinement are still impressive, the engines are the weakest link: The latest 2.0-liter version struggled to top 30 mpg in our daily driving tests and the V6s suffer from lag and a strained top end. They are not purely Porsche engines,

The optional ceramic brakes and standard steel stoppers aren’t Porsche’s best, especially in the fast GTS. You will only notice it when you squeeze it properly and vigorously. In general, the car and this veteran brand in the world of SUVs is still purchasable due to its poise in handling alone. It is embarrassing to say that.

The Porsche Macan T2023 is undoubtedly highway-capable, and you’d never mistake it for being quite fast, but it’s fast enough, especially once the turbo turns and the tach swings to 2,000 rpm. But the Porsche PDK transmission helps make the most of all-wheel drive, shifting intelligently and quickly to make the most of limited shifting power as in every Porsche product. However, I found myself using the Sport Response button to put the powertrain responses into high gear, it’s fast but not like other Porsches.

Whether the value proposition makes sense or not, Porsche says it’ll be in the low $60,000 region. The base model is currently priced at $54,900, while the Porsche Macan Model S comes with a V6 engine at $65,400. If it gets closer to $60,000, the winner will be the Model T, which is more fuel efficient, but the Macan S tempts a lot of people to pay for more than 100 horsepower of extra power.
