Volkswagen has applied several revisions to the exterior of the Jetta for the new year, with the aim of refining its design to ward off new competitors.
The updated front grille gets four chrome crossbars (black for the Sport model), two thick outer bars, and two thin inner bars that flow into the LED headlamp housings on either side, creating a wraparound effect with the signature LED headlights. It does take a while to get up to speed on the highway, but once you get going the ride is fun and fairly smooth.

The Jetta has always been an economical car, and Volkswagen has improved its efficiency even further with the new 1.5-litre engine. The S and Sport models with a manual transmission are less efficient in the city, but better on the highway. An automatic transmission results in improved fuel economy figures for the S and Sport models to 31/41/35 mpg. But the SE and SEL models are heavier, so efficiency drops to 29/40/33 mpg. Volkswagen has updated the Jetta’s interior, giving it a contemporary 8-inch screen. The doors are lined with faux leather inlays, with ceramic stitching. It gave the Jetta a modern, upscale look and feel, and new upgrades have only reinforced that impression. And the design remains too driver-focused to be well ergonomic. So much so that we can say that the Jetta is better than the new Golf GTI, even though the Golf is newer and more expensive.

For driving enthusiasts, the Honda Civic is a no-brainer when compared to the Volkswagen Jetta. It’s simply the best driver’s car, and possibly the best-looking sedan. Its 158-horsepower 2.0-liter engine puts it on par with the Jetta, but the turbo-four’s 180-horsepower engine in the top-spec Civic leaves the Jetta lagging behind in power and versatility.
Regardless of the powertrain, the Honda Civic boasts faster acceleration and much better handling dynamics. With fuel economy returns of between 33 and 36 mpg in the Civic, it’s also impressively efficient.
