McLaren Artura 2023 engine performance
The new powertrain delivers up to 11 miles of all-electric operation. During our test drive, I praised the 2023 McLaren Artura’s acceleration, and I would have preferred it to take us to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds with more drama. Yes, the car is fast, but it is so silent that it is stealthy, and it lacks the aural saturation we prefer in competitive sports cars.
There is a seamless interaction between the electric motor and the internal combustion, resulting in a massive torque plateau that peaks between 2500 and 7000 rpm. The direct regeneration strategy leaves no choice for the driver, and clicking the paddle shifters will only change gears. The system operates with respect, sanctity and consistency in response to pedal feedback.
McLaren Artura 2023 Driving Impressions
My two days driving the Artura revealed a completely different beast than I expected, yes, the 2023 McLaren Artura is definitely fast. Capable, in fact, it retains many of the innovative and lightweight features we’ve come to expect from the Woking brand. It’s a more cohesive and livable package than some of the brand’s more exciting offerings, and represents a more sophisticated and mature way to take McLaren into the next decade.

The maneuverability is very sharp, but it also has a softer side that provides a more comfortable ride for commuting or cruising on highways. The steering brakes on the 2023 McLaren Artura are only used during low-speed cornering, and as such, the Artura relies on a more traditional driving style.
Partura’s drag rate suggests that future McLarens hybrids could have a more brutal side. I found the 2023 McLaren Artura to be a well-managed, well-rounded supercar that’s easy to live with and fun to drive fast, and the LT model is even more brutal and heralds a bright future for McLaren Hybrids. The combination of internal combustion and electric power helps it operate quickly on straight lines, and the dual-clutch provides fast and smooth cooperative shifts.
The default powertrain mode for the McLaren Artura 2023 is electric, and the 2023 McLaren Artura moves quickly, at speeds of up to 80 mph. But I have found that progress is not quite as smooth as in the purely electric mode; Sometimes, you can hear or feel the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission in action.
Comfort mode is a good choice for all-round urban driving, especially with the dual-clutch gearbox set to automatic. Press the engine start button while holding the brakes, and the system will switch to full electric mode, where the vehicle’s electronic systems operate. The petrol engine is absent, and I find the sound from the HVAC compressor and electro-hydraulic power steering pump quieter. The loud squeak from it became quieter. I found acceleration to be slight in electric only mode.
Sport mode leaves the engine in “always on” mode, and power flows in a linear escalation toward the red line. While the dashboard graphics reveal when the wattage is being generated or recovered, the electro-hydraulic steering is on par with most of its peers, and the brake feel is linear and predictable.
The LT’s six-piston carbon-ceramic brakes and aluminum calipers provide excellent stopping power, and in their toughest settings, adaptive Tenneco dampers work with carbon monocoque to feel sharp and responsive. The McLaren Artura is not as exciting on the track as other McLaren cars, nor does it offer high downforce to encourage cornering speeds. Although the Variable Drift Control has been upgraded to adjust the yaw angles within 15 levels.
As McLaren’s first serial production hybrid, the 2023 McLaren Artura is one of the most significant releases to date from the brand’s still relatively young road car division. Its path to production has been problematic and its launch has been somewhat challenging, but the McLaren vision appears to have been executed with diligent attention to detail, while maintaining a strong vision of purity that prioritizes linear suspension, predictable dynamics and lightweight construction. Suspension and handling have been enhanced with increased front wheel width for greater stability and reduced tire wear in association with Pirelli Tire Company. At the rear, a mechanical limited-slip differential provides greater traction and performance while benefiting from improved rear brake wear, performance and reduced fuel consumption compared to the ESP system. Damping is also improved, as is brake cooling efficiency.
Switching the handling mode changes the solenoid damping settings on the shocks, resulting in a noticeably stiffer or softer suspension. Where it never floats, the Artura’s chassis doesn’t have the feeling of slack or slack, but rather the transition from controlled to firm to tight, depending on the setup the driver chooses. The sticky Pirelli P Zeros also manages to give it a feel of firmness and stability that helps it with similarly reassuring braking.

In the road loop during testing, both the dashboard and center touchscreen in our test car suddenly faded away – all in black, for no apparent reason. The digital instrument panel came back to life, but the central touch screen remained out of service – along with air conditioning, navigation, audio and phone connectivity – for the rest of the ride. This was because it was a sunny day and the temperature was high.
It wasn’t our only car that had problems. Several other McLaren Arturas had similar infotainment failures, a reporter was stuck on the side of the road and his car came to a complete stop, and the car was eventually persuaded to come back to life but kept moving in “limp house” mode, making a trip Back slow.
