The rear angle is slightly raised by three-quarters, and the new design gives the SUV a better shape than ever.

Up front, the Sequoia gets the Tundra’s wide grille and LED lights dividing the fenders into an illuminated strut. Also shared with the Tundra, large, chubby fenders and a chunky hood give it a muscular look, while chrome window trims and roof rails add an air of urban sophistication.

Wrap-around taillights hug the rear, and an integrated roof spoiler smooths the rear end. Toyota also made the doors open wider for easier access, but they eat into the window line in a way that doesn’t blend in with the rear quarter windows. TRD Pro models showcase their adventure prowess with three orange safety lights in the grille, 18-inch black wheels, roof rack and TRD dual exhaust.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is also larger than its predecessor. It’s 3.0 inches longer, even though the wheelbase hasn’t changed in length. Still, the Toyota is still slightly smaller than the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition, but even with more space, the Sequoia’s cabin space hasn’t suffered much.

During our test drive, we were pleased with the Sequoia’s comfortable ride and quiet cabin, but our mileage fell short of its on-road behavior. Its wide on-road steering makes it difficult to fit into a lane, which is a problem we’ve long complained about in other large SUVs, too.

And the featherweight steering effort can cause it to experience jitter while driving. And when we get a chance, we’ll put Sequoia through its paces on our test track and update this story with test results.

It’s faster than you’d expect, hitting 60 mph in as little as six seconds, we estimate. A generator sits between the engine and 10-speed automatic transmission for low-speed electric driving below 18 mph.
