A detailed review of Toyota Tundra 2022, advantages, disadvantages and comparison

With only two generations to go since the Toyota Tundra first appeared on the market in 1999, the question mark is, is it fair to say that the pickup truck is a distinguished ambassador for Toyota’s legendary reliability and prominence in the US and global truck market. Some might see its age as a downside compared to newer trucks like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 that dominate sales, but the Tundra is still a reliable workhorse and a capable off-road truck.

The Toyota Tundra is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The Tundra can be either 4×2 or 4×4. It is capable of towing up to 10,200 lb. 4,626 kg.
The transmission is uncontemporary, the interior is outdated and does not fit modern development,

But that does not diminish the value of Tundra still enjoying its position in the market.
Toyota invited us to test drive the outgoing truck.
Let’s see if the Toyota Tundra deserves all the appreciation it has had in its short life, or is it just an old dog unable to run with puppies?
The difference between Toyota Tundra 2021 and Toyota Tundra 2020?
With
the new third-generation Tundra on the way for 2022 , it’s got an overhaul that gives it a solid look. A new Trail Special Edition, only 5,000 cars, will be released, and a new Night Shade package.
A look with a chrome-plated grille and a unique black badge,

It comes with the contents of an upgrade package called the SR5, which includes a tilt-and-reduce steering wheel, electric lumbar adjustment in the front seat, a front center console, three cup holders, and a larger fuel tank.
With a darkened grille, black side-view mirrors, black door handles and black wheels, the bulk of the changes to the Nightshade package are limited to the Limited Edition.
In addition to changes in paint, colors and some platinum derivatives.

Toyota Tundra exterior design
The classic Toyota Tundra stands proud at its front end, adorned with wrap-around headlights, a prominent grille and a chunky lower hatch.
In addition to the underbody trims, the headlights are fitted with halogen headlights, while LED lights are installed in the middle and upper areas, working alongside the daytime running lights and fog lights.
Each Tundra model features a unique grille, with inner wheels and wheels painted chrome or black, and grille or cross design.

As for the Toyota badge, it varies according to the model, for example, the TRD Pro, you get the capital letter “TOYOTA”.
The TRD Pro also features Rigid Industries LED fog lights, raised suspension, TRD front skid plates and model-specific BBS wheels.
The Tundra rides on either 18-inch steel wheels in the SR and SR5 trim and 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels in all upper trims.

The chrome grille surrounds the halogen fog lamps, and distinguishes the SR5 chrome rear bumper.
A choice of double cab or crew cab configurations paired with long, medium or short sleepers can be done.
Dimensions
Toyota Tundra is offered in various configurations, all of which specify the dimensions of a full-size pickup truck.
The wheelbase is 145.7 inches, supporting the CrewMax trim and the longer double cab gets an extended wheelbase of 164.6 inches, meaning body length varies, but it comes in 228.9 inches on CrewMax models with a 247.8-inch double cab and long trunk.

The 4×2 crew cab models have a height of 75.8 inches (1.92532 meters) and increases to 76.2 inches (1.93548 meters), and when you enter the higher class 4×4 guise 4×4.
The height of the double cab models ranges from 76 to 76.4 inches.
And a width of 79.9 inches.
Three bed sizes are also available;
Built to fit crew cabin types, there is a standard 5.5-foot bed, while in the Extended Cab types and slightly higher classes, there is an option for a 6.5-foot standard bed and an 8.1-foot bed.

In terms of ground clearance, most grades are about 10 inches off the ground, but the TRD Pro has 10.6 inches of clearance and an overall height of 77.2 inches.
Tundra weight also varies according to class, however, the lightest version of the Toyota Tundra has a total weight of 5,170 pounds, 2,345 kilos, and in its heavier form, the Toyota Tundra weighs about 5,680 pounds.

Toyota Tundra performance

Toyota, once again, dedicates the entire Tundra line with a single engine, the familiar 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8.
It is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission along with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Performance from the powertrain is just right for the Tundra as an off-roader, but the transmission can be clumsy and not make the most of it which means we’re up against one of the most powerful standard engines in its class but the gearbox isn’t quite enough.
Engine and transmission
2022 Toyota Tundra i FORCE MAX 33 1500x850 %D8%AA%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%A7 %D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A7.jpg
The 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 is the only one in the entire Tundra lineup, and puts out 381 hp and 401 lb-ft to a six-speed automatic, in both rear- and all-wheel drive.
Engine power is plentiful and delivery is consistent, it’s a powerful, consistent and capable car even with a full load.
But the weak point is not the engine, it’s the transmission.
Toyota’s six-speed can be used, but it’s not typical, the gearbox tends to tire the engine at times and is a bit clumsy in choosing the right gear, and compared to competitors from Ford, GM and Ram, it doesn’t feel sharp.

I was amazed that the ride was not improved so the suspension was tuned for heavy traction and rough terrain but the smooth start was not taken care of.
The suspension system in the TRD Pro Series also gives you a softer ride quality, beautifully smoothing dirt tracks while reducing body roll on twisty on-road.
And the suspension upgrade makes it the most refined car on the road.

The brakes really inspire confidence, even at full load, they can stop the truck smoothly, and quickly if necessary.
The ultra-light steering isn’t ideal for road driving, but the efficiency is evident when you get the Tundra into tight spots or during some maneuvers.

And to get the TRD Pro off the beaten path, the engine powers you with a block of torque to lift the massive truck on any major slopes.
But the Tundra TRD Pro’s long wheelbase doesn’t make it the perfect off-roader, and you can put in powerful tires, because Tundra’s TRD suspension and all-wheel drive system ensure these tires can do their job properly.
Toyota Tundra mileage
The Tundra, though heavy, feels like a thirsty horse. In the two-wheel-drive version, expect gasoline mileage figures of just 15 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, for a total of 13 mpg.
In 4WD, the numbers are lower, and the EPA gave it 13/17/14 mpg.
2022 Toyota Tundra Limited TRD Off Road Supersonic Red 065.jpg 1500x1000 1.jpg
And the numbers depend on the use of the truck, as driving on rough roads and towing large loads reduces the economy in gasoline consumption.
The fuel tank in the SR and SR5 models has a capacity of 26.4 gallons, while the other types get a 38 gallon tank, which is optional on the SR5.
With an optional equipped larger tank, the fuel tank can achieve a theoretical range of up to 500 miles in mixed conditions.
Toyota Tundra interior

The Tundra’s interior isn’t the most luxurious or comfortable, but it’s fun.
The dashboard, center console and door components are oversized, but most surfaces are covered in hard-touch materials not all, but key focal points for some applications are soft-touch, and quality ranges from low to high depending on the model chosen.
2022 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition Smoked Mesquite 058.jpg 1500x981 %D8%AA%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%A7 %D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A7.jpg
Some of the trims are more luxurious but far from what’s available on the competition cars.
The plethora of buttons scattered across the dashboard shows the Tundra’s age. The old infotainment system isn’t a good fit for its modernity, and I don’t mean it’s bad. The cabin is really spacious, and it probably will stand the test of time, but it’s not the best cabin to spend your time in.
Seats and interior space
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum Blueprint 063 1500x960 1.jpg
Whether in a double cab or a CrewMax option, the Tundra seats five or six passengers.
The cabin feels spacious with 39.7 inches of headroom.
Headroom is good, and the Tundra gives you 42.5 inches of legroom.
The extended cab offers 34.7 inches in the rear area, and the seats are generously sized and provide plenty of comfort and support for most body types.
Added to its quality is plenty of adjustability, and the steering wheel and driver’s seat can be optimally adjusted to provide optimum outward visibility and convenient access to the controls.
It is the leader in its class.

Interior quality, upholstery and trimmings vary by category, although the cabin does have some refining.
Only the SR grade comes with colored fabric or vinyl surfaces, while the SR5 grade gets fabric upholstery available in either black, graphite or sand beige.
Leather seat upholstery is offered in the same color options, but the premium black leather seats you get when you choose the TRD Pro trim with black stitched leather upholstery with red accents, while the 1794 gets a unique brown leather with suede inserts.
Tundra box and cargo space
Three bed length options are available in the Tundra;
Short bed 5.5 feet, Standard bed 6.5 feet, and Long bed 8.1 feet.
Each bed measures 22.2 inches deep and 50 inches wide.
Payload capacities vary depending on the drivetrain and bed length selected, and the CrewCab can carry up to a maximum of 1,660 pounds at ideal weight, while the Extended Cab can add up to 1,730 pounds, also at its optimum settings.
2022 Toyota Tundra Limited TRD Off Road Supersonic Red 068.jpg 1500x1000 1.jpg
The storage solutions inside the cabin are average, although the side door pockets are deep but narrow, the cup holders, front and rear, suffer from the same flaw because they are too small, the passenger side glove box is also relatively small, and there are storage compartments for small things in the center console.
Toyota Tundra infotainment

The Tundra still has a wide range of amazing features, and Toyota has included plenty of driver aids that many other truck makers don’t offer.
Standard features include keyless entry and four-way manually adjustable front seats.
Air conditioning is essential.

Other connectivity options include Bluetooth and a USB media port.
All other models are equipped with an 8-inch touch screen.

The double cab version of the SR5 gets seven speakers while the CrewMax version gets nine.
The Tundra has excellent sound settings.
The Platinum and 1794 versions are equipped with a 12-speaker JBL surround sound system, which means we are in front of an advanced audio system.
Toyota Tundra problems and reliability
The old versions had two problems that were fixed, the first one related to the fuel pump that would sometimes fail, and the second one related to the low-brightness turn signals.
However, J.D. Power gave this model an above average quality and reliability rating of 88%, which is suitable for Toyota.
Every new Tundra is covered by a base warranty of three years/36,000 miles, and the powertrain warranty extends to five years/60,000 miles, which also covers wear and punctures but for unlimited miles.
Safety in Toyota Tundra
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum Blueprint 060.jpg 1500x1000 1.jpg
NHTSA has given the 2021 Toyota Tundra a four-star safety rating.
The IIHS review of the latest Toyota Tundra was equally impressive, scoring three stars in its six crash tests with good results, while two scored poorly and marginally.
But the standard crash-prevention systems came in well and scored superior ratings.
According to NHTSA crash test results.

The Toyota Tundra has a wide range of active precautions, with eight airbags standard on all trims, including dual knee airbags and the Toyota Safety Sense driver assistance package.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping, Automatic High Beams, and Radar-Guided Adaptive Cruise Control.
Front and Rear Park Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on all trims, and all essentials are included in the comprehensive Star Safety system.
Verdict: Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra a good pickup truck?
The Toyota Tundra is the perfect backbone for Toyota, with its capability and strength, great versatility, and industry-leading reliability.
It is also not as expensive as some competitors.
A tough off-roader, strong chassis and a host of worthwhile upgrades make it the best truck on the road as well.
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum.jpg
I really liked the spacious cabin, but it was still dated and full of buttons and lacked the ergonomic quality of newer trucks.
The Tundra is for those who are looking for something solid and practical and do not care about the extravagance of modern technology and luxury.
The infotainment system is certainly decent, and Toyota saw fit to focus on a full suite of advanced safety features.
But what the competitors are doing makes it look like it’s part of a bygone era.
Among its competitors are the Ford F150 or Ram 1500, which are much newer and generally offer a lot more.
They’re more advanced trucks in a similar price category, but after a Tundra overhaul next year, they’ll probably excel by having everything you need soon.
What is the price of Toyota Tundra 2021?
Toyota Tundra price depends on the drivetrain and body variants you choose;
The SR, in its standard double-cabin appearance with two-wheel drive, comes in at $34,025.
If you choose all-wheel drive, the price will add an additional $3,050, and the long bed will only add $330 to the base price.
The SR5 starts at $35,715 in a double cab, and the CrewMax starts at $38,320.
The Springing for the Limited Edition sells for a base price of $42,740 and $44,605, respectively, for the 4×2 cab models.
Elsewhere, the Platinum and 1794 Edition are sold exclusively as a CrewMax, starting at $49,245 each with a 4×2 system.
The TRD Pro class is $49,125 in a double cab, and the CrewMax is priced at over $53,400.
These $1,595 prices do not include destination, handling and delivery charges on all Toyota Tundra grades.

What Model Toyota Tundra Should You Buy?
The TRD Pro is the obvious choice for those looking for a truck capable of off-road driving, because the Toyota Tundra is also one of the most comfortable vehicles on the road, possibly one of the most powerful options in the lineup.
But it’s pricey, and if you’re looking for a distinct utilitarian factor, the SR5 will make the most sense.
And they are offered with the best variety of cabins and beds at a relatively low price.
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum 07 1500x1000 1.jpg
It comes standard with a larger infotainment touchscreen and a variety of additional storage solutions inside the cabin.
But if you’re after luxury and comfort going into the competition instead, these aren’t tough suits in the Tundra.

Comparing Toyota Tundra 2021 and Toyota Tacoma
If you need a more compact SUV and are a fan of Toyota, the Tacoma is a suitable alternative.
Similar in style, it’s a mid-size but less capable 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, and there is an option for a 3.5-liter V6, both of which are less powerful than the Tundra.
Which is why the Tacoma can tow 6,800 pounds compared to more than 10,000 towed by the Tundra.
2022 Toyota Tundra Platinum Blueprint Towing 100 1500x1000 1.jpg
The Tacoma has less capacity and a lot less space, but it’s more adept off-road because of its shorter wheelbase and compact overall dimensions.
Equipment levels are pretty similar, but the Tacoma is $1,000 cheaper on a parts basis.
Truck shoppers know exactly what they need, so if you need to tow big things, the Tundra is the best vehicle, but if you need an adventure truck that can get into more difficult places on the mountain, the Tacoma is the better of the two.
Comparison between Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan
The tundra and titan share many similarities, from their performance numbers to their personalities.
They feature a full-size, single-cylinder V8 engine, although the Titan is 19 hp more than the Tundra’s 381 hp.
The Titan’s nine-speed automatic transmission is newer and faster than the Tundra’s 6-speed automatic, and the Titan is distinctive in the way the powertrain behaves.
Despite that extra power and a more precise transmission, the Tundra is still capable of towing far more than the Titan’s 9,370 pounds of towing capacity.
While the Titan has larger cab and bed configurations, it offers versatility and superior towing capabilities.
Nissan has a slightly more refined cabin, and the bottom line is the Tundra is the most capable and reliable truck ever and gets similar specs in terms of features and safety technology.
It’s the truck of our choice, considering how much the base Titan costs compared to the entry-level Tundra.
