Careful review, in-depth examination and comprehensive experience of the BMW 2 Series .. the small coupe still makes a convincing case.
For years, BMW cars had quad headlights, and the BMW 2 Series 2022 Coupe comes with one headlight on either side. As for the famous kidney grilles, they became modest in size and closed when the engine did not need cooling. Also, the BMW 2 Series 2022 Coupe does not include hybrid versions.

All the hallmarks of a BMW – the long bonnet, rear-wheel drive, delicate kidney grilles and the large Hofmeister grille – have been eliminated.
The new BMW 2 Series may be the leader in its class, but there is also no shortage of four-door coupes. The six-cylinder BMW M240i xDrive impressed us with its grand touring character; The test we conducted reveals a lot about the BMW 2 Series 2022, which we record in the following lines.
What’s new for the 2022 BMW 2-Series
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe (four-door sedan) gets a complete redesign for 2022, offering a new exterior design, upgraded interior design and added volume.
The exterior design of the BMW 2 Series 2022

Structure, dimensions and technical details
The all-new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe is the second generation of the 2 Series sedan, the latest in a long line of two- and four-door sports cars. The BMW 2 Series takes on a three-box silhouette, and the second-generation BMW 2 Series follows suit.

The second series has a special exterior appearance, and the smaller grille matches better with the headlights of the BMW 2 Series 2022, and the grille gives it a cohesive front end design. It’s a deliberate strategy to retain the more traditional buyer with some updates to appeal to younger buyers,” Domagoj Ducic, BMW’s chief design officer, told us. This is why the large network has been absent from the fifth category recently. It is also the silhouette of a three-box model in the BMW Neue Klasse design.
And the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe took the same design as the three rear-wheel drive boxes, which makes it a unique car in this segment of cars . The exterior design of the BMW 2 Series Coupe is designed by José Casas. A Mexican-born designer, he designed the BMW iNEXT and M Vision NEXT concept cars. It gave us a less controversial design than the Series 4, but its design is still the subject of many online discussions.

It is the first time that BMW has given one of its cars a retro look with unique features that stand out among its peers. To make it even more interesting for the BMW community. With regard to the design, designer Casas says that it is a compact car, which is not suitable for larger grilles. This is why the design team decided to use more traditional specifications to create a smaller BMW grille.
The structure and dimensions of the BMW 2 Series 2022
The 2022 BMW 2 Series is based on a shortened version of the CLAR platform used in all other long-engined BMW cars. This means that it probably wouldn’t be impossible for BMW to make a plug-in hybrid or all-electric version of the 2 Series Coupe.
The second series has grown significantly. It measures 4,537mm in length and 1,838mm in width, an increase of 105mm in length and 64mm in width. It is 47mm longer than the third-generation 3 Series Coupe, and is marginally narrower than the E38 7-Series. As a result, the 220i weighs in at 1,546kg.
Engine options for the 2022 BMW 2 Series
The engine group is the “best” from the German manufacturer, and according to the mechanical design, the engine is installed longitudinally to drive the rear wheels. Suspension is by MacPherson struts at the front and multi-link at the rear. The base engine is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque (230i Coupe). Available engines:
- 2.0L TURBO 4-CYLINDER WITH 228 HP AND 258 lb-ft OF TORQUE (228i Gran Coupe)
- 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 301 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque (M235i xDrive Gran Coupe)
- 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque (M240i xDrive Coupe)

Regarding the drive system: there is a standard rear-wheel drive (Coupe) and front-wheel drive (Gran Coupe); A four-wheel drive option is available. All models get a ZF eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that delivers excellent performance, shifts are extremely quick, and I like the way it responds to gearshifts and its smooth shifting.
Engine performance of the BMW 2 Series 2022
Each of the BMW 2 Series’ transmission options delivers powerful and exciting acceleration, and the automatic transmission delivers impressive performance. However, the M235 and M240 versions are significantly more powerful. And I found that the BMW 220i is not a fast car. Acceleration takes 7.3 seconds to reach 60 mph, and the Hyundai i20 N beats it by a full second.

The 220i’s stand-start performance is very similar to that of the old Toyota GT86. And because the 2022 BMW 2 Series is turbocharged, and its torque reaches 221 lb-ft (70 lb-ft more than the Toyota), its performance is clearly felt in the acceleration numbers.

The 220i and 230i models get dual circular exhausts, the 220d class has only one exhaust, while the M240i model gets dual trapezoidal elements. And sure enough, the M2 features four distinct pipes. And the 220i feels like a slightly faster car than the acceleration numbers would suggest. The 230i gets a beneficial boost of 60 more horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque.
Driving impressions of the 2022 BMW 2 Series
Like all modern BMWs, the 2 Series allows the driver to configure different aspects of how they drive. Eco Pro mode slows down all responses, while Normal mode is, as the name suggests, fairly normal, except that it calibrates the gearbox to make it more refined.

Sport mode makes it more responsive, without holding on to gears for as long as when you hit the gearlever in Sport mode. That makes throttle response keener, makes some synthetic engine sounds, increases steering heaviness and makes the brakes more tactile.

All of these aspects can be reversed in Sport Individual mode, except for the grab brake. This is frustrating, because the gearbox is at its best in Sport mode and the artificial engine noise adds to the driving experience, making the car feel less like a four-wheel drive, and more like the old Ford V4 with a fruity tone.
Steering, suspension and ride comfort of the 2022 BMW 2 Series
So the 2022 BMW 2 Series 220i sports the distinctive chassis balance provided by the rear-wheel drive. It also has more fun cornering in the coupe. That’s the idea. Handling is what the 2 Series Coupe offers best. All in all, as long as you don’t expect it to be a hardcore sports car. The all-wheel-drive M135i will produce more traction in the wet, while we find the Mazda MX-5 to be more playful. But it is less balanced than BMW.

The low driving position, low center of gravity and rear-wheel drive make the 2022 BMW 2 Series lift interesting turns and corners. The car’s low center of gravity and the option of an ultra-low seating position also help the 2 Series’ natural flow on a twisty road. Yes, there is a fair amount of mass required of it to change direction, but it does so more willingly than in a tall car.

The steering takes 2.2 turns to lock up, which suggests it can throw off a lot of chassis balance, but the BMW has made it to the good effect of making the speed feel natural. For a modern steering rack, it’s average, with a reassuring weight and decent feel when the front axle is loaded, and Sport mode adds artificial weight without feedback.
The handling and stability of the BMW 2 Series 2022
The BMW 2 Series combines nimble driving with acceptable ride quality. Although it’s not overly sharp and aggressive, it’s still one of the most powerful small sports cars out there.
In the 220i you always feel like you’re being pushed through a corner instead of drifting into a fence. Wet roads change driving dramatically and make the 220i happy spinning the rear Pirelli tyres.

As is often the case with BMWs not being full-fat M cars, the 2 Series has its limitations. Through some medium-speed corners, the front axle could feel some rubber bushings that needed a split second to snap. But it drains 5% of your confidence. And if active safety systems are a nuisance in many other cars. But it works fine in the second category, and can be easily turned off by pressing a physical button.
Noise and vibration in the BMW 2 Series 2022
Noise reduction in the 2022 BMW 2 Series disappoints: it puts out a noise of 69 decibels at 70 mph, the worst in the segment. And it doesn’t sound entirely bad, the Harman Kardon sound system effortlessly takes you away from the road growl of the rear tires. And I found that the M Sport usually handles uneven roads a little clumsily.

Over big bumps, the suspension does not control body mass. Which means big movements reach you more clearly. Meanwhile, in the potholes and bumps, the 19-inch wheels can add to the feeling of permanent instability and tension on poor surfaces. That’s not because the suspension is too stiff – it’s befitting of a sports coupe – but because it needs more control.

The Series II compensates for this with excellent seat comfort. The rigid padding is extremely supportive and offers more driving position adjustment than any other vehicle. And the 220i feels powerful. It’s not slow, but it doesn’t climb steep slopes quickly, meaning mountain driving won’t be as easy or exciting as its outward appearance would suggest.
The interior cabin design of the BMW 2 Series 2022

Dashboard, infotainment system, satellite navigation, and passenger space
Previous BMW 2 Series cars used more budget-conscious interior materials, but since the new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupé is actually a shortened 4-Series car, it’s got a 4-Series dashboard, same center console and seats.
There’s little surprise in the interior of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe. It’s designed similarly to the 4 Series, with a meaty steering wheel, elegant air vents, and an intuitive infotainment system.
The quality of materials in the cabin of the BMW 2 Series 2022
The interior materials, fit, finish and ergonomics of the 2022 BMW 2 Series are similar to those of a Mercedes CLA or Audi A3. There are some hard plastics, but they are for door boxes and other moldings that are usually out of sight.

The center console includes a lot of buttons, but they have been reduced in size in favor of a larger screen coming in an imminent update. Beginning in the summer, all 2 Series cars will get a large, curved screen that includes a 12.3-inch cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment screen.
The spaciousness and spaciousness of the BMW 2 Series 2022
BMW 2 Series 2022 has four full seats 2+2. Rear legroom is about the size of a city car, but headroom is very limited. The rear seats fit children well, and usability is also affected by the front seat’s position and forward-backward movement.

The trunk has a capacity of 390 liters, which is much more spacious than the trunk of the Audi TT, Toyota GR86, or even the Audi S3 sedan and Mercedes-AMG CLA 35.
The multimedia system in the BMW 2 Series 2022
We often mention BMW iDrive in other car reviews, simply because it is the best out there. The 2022 BMW 2 Series combines an ultra-responsive touchscreen with logical menus and a rotary console surrounded by a panel of shortcut buttons. It also provided the back area with a pair of USB-C ports.

The display supports phone systems wirelessly, and the built-in navigation is useful because it’s almost as good as Google in traffic, and all directions are shown in the dashboard and head-up display. To top it all off, there’s a row of eight numbered buttons that can be configured for almost any function you specify.
Operating costs of a 2022 BMW 2 Series
Pricing for the first-series 220i of the BMW 2 Series Coupé lineup starts at £36,010. And if you want a rear-wheel-drive coupe, there are no cheaper options than the Toyota GR86 at under £30,000.

If you’re willing to forgo the idea of a rear-wheel-drive coupe, there are plenty of similarly priced alternatives out there. The closest is the Audi TT, but the Jaguar XE P250, Mercedes CLA 200 and BMW M135i xDrive offer temptations.
Fuel economy in the BMW 2 Series 2022

Fuel economy in the base 2022 BMW 230i Coupe is excellent for the luxury small car class. It varies by engine:
- 230i Coupe: 26/35 mpg city/highway
- 228i Gran Coupe: 24/34 mpg
- 228i xDrive Gran Coupe achieved: 23/33 mpg
- M235i xDrive Gran Coupe achieved: 23/32 mpg
- M240i xDrive Coupe achieved: 23/32 mpg
The quality of the BMW 2 Series 2022

Look at the BMW 2 Series 2022 Coupé. It’s a sports car, it competes with the Toyota GR86, but it’s a very heavy car, and the 1 Series 220i we tested is very slow. On the other hand, it is an everyday coupe that offers an elegant saloon, with its low seating position and classic rear wheel drive it is a very convincing car. It’s not perfect, but it has a mature powertrain, a very comfortable interior and excellent multimedia.
Features of the BMW 2 Series 2022
- The cabin is perfect and the infotainment ergonomics are excellent
- Balanced rear wheel dynamics
Disadvantages of the BMW 2 Series 2022
- The M Sport’s passive suspension lacks some control
- Noise isolation is not good
