The design of the Volkswagen ID.5 differs from the ID.4. Behind the B-pillars there is a lowered roofline and a dramatic angled hatch for an aggressive stance and improved aerodynamics. Thanks to the curved greenhouse and flat rear deck, the ID.5 has an unmistakable coupe-like appearance. The ID.5 features a rear spoiler that makes it even sportier. The interior of the Coupe version is the same as that of the ID.4.

The Volkswagen ID.5’s styling looks like the body style of the future: aerodynamic, expressive, sporty, with short, prominent lines.

The VW ID.5 GTX got special design parts similar to the ID.4 GTX. Three honeycomb elements on the outer edges of the bumper form the LED daytime running lights of the GTX variant and indicate their presence at the front. At the rear, instead of the model name badge, there is a GTX badge on the boot lid.

2022 Volkswagen ID.5 Engine

You can get a Volkswagen AD5 with 172 hp, 201 hp or 295 hp. We didn’t test the entry-level 172 hp (called Pro) engine, but we did try the Pro Performance with the 201 hp engine. With an official 0-62 mph acceleration time of 8.4 seconds, it’s a fast enough car for most situations, but it lacks the instant punch you get from a Kia EV6 RWD or Tesla Model Y Long Range.

The range-topping GTX class has two electric motors, giving it more power and all-wheel drive. Acceleration off the line, it’s really fast and can move from 0 to 62 mph in 6.3 seconds.

How far will the Volkswagen ID.5 “range” in 2022

All versions of the Volkswagen ID.5 share the same 77 kWh battery, giving the Pro and Pro Performance an identical range – range – of 313 miles. The GTX-class’s range is shorter – 296 miles – due to the increased weight brought on by the all-wheel drive system.

Driving impressions of the Volkswagen ID.5 in 2022

There is no real sense of satisfaction that you can get from driving a Volkswagen ID.5, other than the pleasure of getting the range and good economy, if that kind of thing amuses you. Volkswagen is very good at putting together a decently priced electric powertrain, and recent updates to the onboard electronics have achieved faster charging, which those who regularly commute the hefty miles will appreciate.

It’s a fast car, but there’s no fun in driving it fast. Its all-wheel drive system avoids almost any scrabble insult and will traverse the suburb efficiently enough. It’s definitely not the type of high-performance car you want to take an extra ride, or that you want to willingly go the long way.

In all Volkswagen ID.5 models, there is a nanny quality of the car as she constantly decides for herself that she knows how to do things better than the driver. This manifests itself in no less important features than a car that locks itself when you get out of the driver’s seat, or when it annoys you while on the move.

The steering is heavy, but dependable, and the Pro/Pro Performance models avoid the kind of torque behavior that many electric cars mistake for personality these days. They make it easier to coexist with the car in traffic or around town, and crowded gas and brake pedals are a plus.

The high-tech problem of the Volkswagen ID.5

To be fair, predictive recovery is pretty good in practice – the car is watching the road and will slow you down if you get off the gas pedal and the cars in front of you slow down. After all, when you’re sitting inside your Volkswagen ID.5 it feels like you’re driving a game on the computer with all the computer aids turned on (and you can even get green lines to trace from the augmented reality head-up display).

Suspension and driving comfort of the Volkswagen ID.5

There are electric SUVs that are much smoother than the Volkswagen ID.5, but they are still relatively comfortable. Especially if you opt for the larger 21″ alloy wheels, but the ID.5 is more tolerant of larger bumps and potholes.

It’s much better than the Ford Mustang Mach-E (which never rests on any surface). And we only sampled a Volkswagen ID.5 with adaptive suspension, or DCC as Volkswagen calls it. This allows you to choose different settings, from the softest Comfort mode to the most stable Sport mode. They do a good job of letting you change the car’s dynamics at the touch of a button but you have to go with the Max or GTX Max models to get them.

The handling and stability of the Volkswagen ID.5 2022

The Volkswagen ID.5, even in the GTX model, is not a particularly attractive car to drive, but it is a capable car by class standards. For example, the steering is progressive as you begin to turn into a corner and it is easier to judge the direction of the nose. It weighs a bit after a quarter turn, but won’t strain your arms in a tight parking lot.

There’s also plenty of stability, and body motions are much better controlled than in the Mach-E and Model Y. This makes driving the Volkswagen ID.4 a quieter and more harmonious driving experience. And if you want something a little more fun and nimble, try the Jaguar I-Pace or the Kia EV6.

Volkswagen ID.5 2022 Noise and Vibration

There’s virtually no noise from the Volkswagen ID.5 electric motor around town, but the large wheels of our 21-inch test vehicle made quite a bit of road noise at highway speeds. Wind noise is contained reasonably well, but the Q4 e-tron Sportback, EV6 and Ioniq 5 are all quieter cruising companions.

We also wish the Volkswagen ID.5 brakes were more advanced. I’ve found that the pedal takes a very long ride, which makes slowing down from higher speeds a choppy process. You can raise regenerative braking (a system that converts energy that would be lost as heat during braking and returns it to the battery as electricity), and adjust it so that the car slows steadily as soon as you lift the accelerator pedal. The effect is not as powerful as a single pedal drive that can be achieved with the C40 Recharge and Model Y.

Given the list price of the Volkswagen ID.5 is not insignificant, its interior is a bit disappointing. There’s more hard plastic in the ID.5 than you’ll find in its competitors, for example, the interior trim on the dashboard looks a bit like aluminum, but is actually hollow strips of plastic, and the build quality is minimal but better than the Ford Mustang Mach-E .

Volkswagen ID.5 driving position and dashboard

Let’s start with the good parts. The driver’s seat in the Volkswagen ID.5 is supportive, especially in turns and corners, and adjustable lumbar support is standard on all models. The steering wheel extends well for height and reach, and the digital instrument compartment moves with it so you can always see the screen. We also like the standard AR Overhead Display because it’s crystal clear, easy to read and highly configurable.

Even the single foldable armrest attached to the driver’s seat is a great addition. Yes, it’s not quite as comfortable as the wider center armrest you get on an Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback or a Tesla Model Y, but it does a decent job.

Unfortunately, usability is where the Volkswagen ID.5 fails. There are no physical buttons and the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel are difficult to operate and easy to accidentally operate. It’s a similar story to air conditioning – the touch-sensitive sliders for the temperature settings are nice, but to make matters worse, they aren’t backlit. This means that you have no hope of using it strictly at night.

The ID.5 high windshield line and thick, sharp-angled front pillars are somewhat of a nuisance; From the driver’s seat, they block your view of the end of the hood and around or near you, like bulkheads. Fortunately, your side view is good, but the Volkswagen ID.5’s tapering roofline and thick rear pillars can block the view over the shoulder, although there are some windows in those pillars that provide a lot more visibility than you get on the Volvo C40 Recharge .

The small rear screen also obstructs the rear view, but this is mitigated by standard-fit front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and the intelligent “Park Assist Plus with memory function” system. The latter system allows you to save parking maneuvers in the places you visit regularly. You can then use the feature to have the car perform this precise maneuver in the same space independently. Powerful Matrix LED headlights are also standard across the range.

The spaciousness of the Volkswagen ID.5 in 2022

In fact, although it’s not the biggest car in the segment, it’s still good if you’re more than six feet tall. The storage space is also good. There are large door bins, small trays and small boxes inside the center console, and a glove box.

The coupe shape and low, sloped roofline of the Volkswagen ID.5 greatly reduce rear headroom – as does the addition of the standard panoramic roof. The result is taller contact with the headliner, and the middle passenger will benefit from a flat floor, so if you plan on carrying tall passengers regularly, we recommend you take a look at the regular Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6 or ED.

On a more positive note, I’ve found that the front seat’s high mounting position gives you room to put your feet under. As per the introduction, rear passengers also get reasonably large door bins, along with cup holders in the center armrest. Oddly enough, the more slippery ID.5 actually has a rear trunk that’s a bit larger than the regular ID.4 with a capacity of 549 liters – about 6 liters more.

Navigation and infotainment systems for the Volkswagen ID.5 in 2022

The ID.5’s 12.0-inch touch screen is reasonably sized and located high on the dashboard and is easy to read on the go. However, this is where the positives begin and end. The system itself is incredibly slow and the user interface is confusingly arranged.

And while all models have natural speech voice control, it can be hard to tell if the car will do what you ask or not – especially if you have annoying kids in the car. Within about an hour, we accidentally turned it on four times, which was incredibly distracting.

Sat-nav is standard across the range, as is smartphone mirroring, plus the ID.5 is the first Volkswagen to feature USB-PD (Power Delivery) ports – these are capable of charging larger and more powerful devices. The laptop has a capacity of up to 45 watts. This is useful.

The Volkswagen ID.5 comes with an extensive list of standard equipment and can only be had with a battery of up to 77 kWh, so this naturally pushes the price of the base car far beyond that of its competitors. In other words, this is not a car Cheap SUV coupe. But it is well equipped and much faster than its competitors. Fortunately, ID.5 is expected to hold its value quite well.

All models can be charged up to 135 kW, which means that increasing the charge from 5 to 80% will take about half an hour. This sounds rather impressive, but remember that the much cheaper Kia EV6 can charge at rates up to 235 kW and the Model Y up to 250 kW.

The Entry-level Life Tech comes with a range of features:

The ID.5 battery warranty lasts for eight years/100,000 miles, and the rest of the vehicle is guaranteed for three years/60,000 miles. That’s not great when you consider that the Kia e-Niro and EV6 come with seven-year/100,000-mile warranties.
