After 16 years, the 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is finally as cool and more powerful than ever.
Yes, the outgoing Nissan Frontier was old, and it’s been on the market for over 15 years with minimal upgrades. However, the old Nissan Frontier pickup still sold well, selling 80,000 units in 2018, its best sales year ever. Despite the growing demand, Nissan delayed updating the Nissan Frontier despite competition from Ford, Chevrolet, and others.
We’ve waited nearly two decades for the new Nissan Frontier, and our new Frontier family really does. It’s pretty and chunky. Yes, we don’t need luxury mid-size pickup trucks. Because they are value-focused cars, they focus on the basics of trucks, not the luxury – and the previous generation Nissan Frontier is a good example.
The 2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X is a welcome improvement. It’s a mid-size car with a nice look, a modern V6 engine (inherited from the 2020 model), updated suspension, and an all-new cabin for 2022. Nissan has finally built a truck that looks modern, competitive, and truly deserves attention.

Nissan Frontier features and specifications
The exterior design of the Nissan Frontier 2022
- Exterior Color: Pearl Blue
- Interior Color: Charcoal with Lava Red
- Wheel Size: 17 inch
The new Nissan Frontier has the best looking truck in its class. The sculpted front features C-shaped headlights, a black grille and Lava Red badging (in the Pro-4X grade), with the word “FRONTIER” stamped near the hood line. Large, practical skid plates rise from the bottom of the car and connect to a second recess just below the main grille.
The taillights mimic the front mounts in their shape, and there’s another seal at the base of the tailgate. This truck also features an additional Sport Bar, which gives the 2022 Nissan Frontier more rigidity, but it’s a $1,095 option that also requires the appropriate $990 Pro-X and package Technology $990.
My impression of the Nissan Frontier 2022 design
The 2022 redesign brought about major changes, the new designs are more than an update of the old school formula. We didn’t expect the whole design to be old and lacking in innovation and was like resurrecting a corpse with a new heart, new lungs, but the bones are old and brittle. This was the perfect time for Nissan to raise the bar.
Our test car was the top of the 7 releases offered by the new Nissan Frontier for 2022, and includes both King Cab and Crew Cab models, and includes advanced features, specialized equipment, and a special off-road suspension package. This version comes with a starting price of $47,498.

Nissan Frontier cabin design 2022

- Seating configuration: 2/3
- Payload capacity: 558 kg
The attractive new interior design of the 2022 Nissan Frontier is its biggest improvement and most important update. But it kept some things from the previous version: the tilt steering column; The elevated seating position provides a towering view of the road. The Zero Gravity booster front seats are a new discovery, and my attention is drawn to soft touch points and thoughtful finishes.
The 2022 Nissan Frontier followed the same basic and functional trends as most midsize trucks in terms of interior design. Black hard plastic on the center console and door panels is a feature in this segment, there are black leather seats, and “Pro-4X” logos embroidered on the headrests. I liked the choice of fabric upholstery with Lava Red stitching on the steering wheel and seats, a bright touch that the leather seats ignored.
Away from scattered plastics. A 7.0-inch instrument screen welcomes you, and the latest entertainment screen is available in 8.0 or 9.0-inch sizes, depending on the category, along with wireless charging, Wi-Fi, and a 10-speaker Fender audio system. Compared to the Tacoma or Ranger, the 2022 Nissan Frontier feels more spacious, with plenty of storage space and plenty, but the 4.9-foot bed is a few inches smaller in its class.
The Pro-4X class of the 2022 Nissan Frontier cared about ride quality, which is uncommon in off-road trucks. Nissan offers Zero Gravity grained leather seats as part of the $2,790 Pro Premium package. It perfectly fits my body, and provides excellent lower back support. It features a powerful heating function as part of the $400 comfort package that will keep your back warm.
Technology and gadgets in the 2022 Nissan Frontier
- Center screen: 9.0 inch touch screen
- Instrument cluster screen: 7.0″ productivity screen
- Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
The basic category of Frontier uses a standard 8.0-inch touch screen, with a 7.0-inch instrument screen, and when choosing the Pro-4X you get a 9.0-inch screen, support for phone systems is standard in all categories, as well as wired connections, while navigation, satellite radio and a Wi-Fi hotspot are -Fi is exclusive to the Pro-4X model. With two USB-A ports and two USB-C ports.
The infotainment system is consistent across Nissan products, and I’ve found that the graphics aren’t quite as crisp, the layout is a bit cluttered, and the haptic response is slow. The system mitigates these two previous problems.
The 2022 Nissan Frontier offers options to enhance the tech suite, as the Pro Convenience package ($1,990) adds a 120-volt outlet for the bed and rear center console, as well as remote start and wireless phone charging. The Pro Premium package adds the same features as the previous package, with a 10-speaker Fender sound system with crystal clear sound and a HomeLink garage-doors transceiver, which costs $2,790.
Engine Nissan Frontier 2022
- Engine: 3.8L V6.0
- Output: 310 hp / 281 lbs
- Transmission: Nine-speed automatic
The Tacoma and Colorado’s V6s lack low-end torque, and the Ford Ranger is only available with a four-cylinder engine, but the 2022 Nissan Frontier has a six-cylinder engine loved in its class, and it’s the most powerful indeed.
Nissan Frontier 2022 Engine Performance
The 2022 Nissan Frontier’s 3.8-liter engine puts out 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, beating the Colorado by several horses, and the Tacoma by more than 30. The engine made me feel powerful; The line drag is plentiful, and it is easy to achieve high speeds without protest. There is no groaning or disappointing acceleration when you put your foot on the gas.
The engine is joined by a nine-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to all four wheels on demand. Its transitions are quick and decisive, with no comment or hesitation. There are no paddles behind the wheel, and there are no driving modes either. Alternatively, the Frontier Pro-4X offers a low-range four-wheel-drive mode and Bilstein-specific off-road shocks.
2022 Nissan Frontier driving and performance impressions
Many would agree that the 2022 Nissan Frontier is robust, capable and reliable, but we have our feedback and a few minor complaints. Among them is the lack of active safety features, and the upright rear seat back is uncomfortable. With a complaint of the heaviness of the steering.
Unfortunately, the Frontier Pro-4X lacks the advanced features found in competitors like the Taco TRD and Colorado ZR2. Nissan is ditching equipment like remote tank shocks, front locking differentials, adaptive dampers, and more, which means the Frontier won’t be able to keep up with Toyota and Chevy when the road gets tough.
We all agreed that the new Nissan Frontier is a solid truck that’s good at doing basic truck chores, there’s nothing new or innovative about it, it’s been pushing the Frontier since 2020, and the Frontier Pro-4X we tested struggled on the sandy off-road track.
The second observation from my night driving was the noise levels. The stereo was turned off and sailing was silent, and cabin noise levels on the 2022 Nissan Frontier were lower than expected, even with the winter set of tires. It’s not silent, but it’s quiet enough for a comfortable ride, you’ll need to raise your voice a bit to have a conversation with a nearby passenger, and the quality of the Bluetooth connection is good, so if you’re going to use it for relaxation, I think you’ll find the 2022 Nissan Frontier makes a good setup.
If you’re going to use it as a listening stage, the optional Fender Stereo reproduces your tunes with plenty of amplification. And you can enjoy the brightly lit scene in front of you, and I think you’ll find a night drive that energizes you more than it bothers you.
Safety and security in the Nissan Frontier 2022
- Driver Assistance Level: SAE Level 1
- NHTSA Rating: Unrated
- IIHS Rating: Not Rated
Some Nissan Frontier models struggle with the safety department. ProPilot Assist is not available on some trims, due to the lack of an electrically assisted steering rack, and adaptive cruise control is limited to the options menu. It comes as part of the ACC Technology Package, priced at $990, and also includes Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist. The Pro Convenience package also adds a 360-degree camera.
The available systems are working fine. The 360-degree camera helped me steer my car into parking spots, adaptive cruise control did its job on the highway, maintaining a steady pace and braking as needed, the new 2022 Nissan Frontier not tested in NHTSA or IIHS .
The fuel economy of the Nissan Frontier 2022 in fuel consumption
- City: 17 mpg
- Highway: 20 mpg
- Combined: 18 mpg
A regular-wheel drive 2022 Nissan Frontier gets 18 mpg city, 24 highway, with an average of 20 miles. The four-wheel drive model is less fuel efficient, getting 17 mpg city, 22 highway, and an average of 19. Our testing showed an average gallon of about 15 miles.
The Honda Ridgeline is the most economical all-wheel drive, with a combined 21 chops, while the Ranger Tremor matches the Nissan Frontier overall and does 19 combined. But Ford is a little better in town. While the Colorado ZR2 and Taco TRD Pro are more fuel efficient than the Nissan Frontier.

Value for your Nissan Frontier 2022
- Base Price: $28,140 + Destination $1,225
- Base Price: $38.595
- Vehicle tested: $46,570
The 2022 Nissan Frontier is not a midsize truck. Its starting price is $29365, which makes it good value for money. The 2022 Nissan Frontier is also the only truck in its class with a standard V6 engine and automatic transmission.
The Pro-4X is, of course, more expensive, and it hurts your wallet by about $38,595. It’s almost complete, and a truck that’s nearly fully loaded will set you back $46,570. It includes a bunch of packages, including the $2,790 Pro Premium package, which also requires you to add the $1,990 Convenience Package, and the $990 Technology Package. The off-road side rails ($750), the Bed Access package ($540) and the Frontier price quickly closes in at $50,000. And that doesn’t even include the fancy paint ($395) and nicer wheels ($1,000).
Nissan Frontier 2022 prices compared to its competitors
The price of a loaded Frontier may sound big, and in a vacuum, but remember that other off-road trucks in this class aren’t much cheaper. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro starts at $47,350, the Gladiator Rubicon costs around $48,885, and the Colorado ZR2 easily tops $50,000 with all options selected. Pricing for the base S-Class starts at $29,015, with rear-wheel drive and an extended cab. You can find out the prices of Frontier in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia here.
Yes, there are less expensive pickups on the market, but many of them aren’t as well-equipped, and they’re all with four-cylinder engines, and compared to the new Ford Maverick too, and the loaded Hyundai Santa Cruz, the Pro-4X models top out for under $45,000 — which is less. Few of its equipped competitors.
Choosing the right Nissan Frontier 2022
The Nissan Frontier is a nice looking truck, competing off-road in a class full of solid alternatives….. My recommendation is to splurge on the Pro Premium and Technology packages, they are well worth it. Also feel free to forgo options like the gym bar and side steps.
