It was the recently retired Toyota GT86: a sports car that wasn’t overpowered or expensive, and had a tendency to over-steer. It was a charming car but it was not without flaws. It lacked good torque and needed more Toyota effort; While the interior design was commendable, the materials were so inexpensive that some buyers were repulsed by them—the cold could shatter the gear lever; Roughness made it a tiring car.
There will be no discontinued GT86 and all new versions will bear the GR logo.
The name comes from the Gazoo Racing sub-brand now created as part of Toyota, which gave us the GR Supra and GR Yaris.
It is a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru.
And we were able to get behind the wheel, before the official unveiling of the car last December.

Toyota took an evolutionary approach to designing the new 2022 Toyota GR86—there’s not much to complain about .
This coupe is driver-focused and the design conveys this message perfectly : functional exterior vents improve steering stability, and integrated front fenders and swing molding enhance aerodynamics.
In terms of its dimensions, the new 2022 Toyota GR86 is not much different.
It is 1.2 inches longer, and the wheelbase has increased by 0.2 inches, making it wider than before.
The new coupe is now 167.9 inches long, 69.9 inches wide, 51.6 inches high and has a wheelbase of 101.4 inches.
The first category weighs 2,811 pounds, an increase of 35 pounds.
At the top of the class, the GR 86 now weighs 2,868 pounds in the Premium model when equipped with an automatic transmission.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 comes with MacPherson strut suspension at the front, double wishbone at the rear but with reinforced mounts, variable springs, dampers, good geometry and a lower ride height of 10mm.
The anti-roll bar is also now attached directly to the rear subframe for increased stability.
The width of the rear track is slightly increased for the same reason.

A significant amount of additional struts have been added between the suspension and frame, along with new stabilizers and internal stiffening measures within the chassis, increasing body rigidity by up to 60% in the front and 50% in the rear, Toyota said.
The company used more aluminum in the chassis, but the curb weight was only slightly increased to 1,275 kg.
The wheelbase has increased by 5 mm, and the driver’s seat has decreased by 5 mm, which is better for stability and center of gravity respectively.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 is available with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and DRLs, all-LED taillights, chrome-plated dual exhaust, and GR badges as standard.
The optional Premium Package adds a distinctive duckbill spoiler, adaptive headlights and larger 18-inch wheels.
Both models feature a ‘G Mesh’ grille dedicated exclusively to the GR 86.

The new Toyota GR 86 once again offers a straightforward, driver-focused interior.
It’s not particularly luxurious but everything feels tightly pulled together, with an 8-inch multifunction display in front of the driver and when Sport mode is on, a red ring around the speedometer lights up.
In track mode, the display changes to make the higher rpm range more prominent.
Even the automatic model has a gear lever similar to a manual transmission.

Toyota was able to make good use of the space.
As standard, expect good gadgets like dual-zone automatic climate control and sport bucket seats, and the Premium Edition has faux leather on the door panels, along with aluminum sport pedals.
The 2022 Toyota GR86 is still filled with hard plastic, but to a lesser extent, the materials your hands and elbows touch are cushioned, soothing, and high-quality.

The new 2022 Toyota GR86 offers a very small trunk slot, with a cargo area of 6.26 cubic feet. The available subwoofer takes up plenty of space. Small door pockets provide more room to hold bottles, so storage is limited.
In the center console there is a rather small individual square storage space, and under the center armrest are two cup holders.
The automatic versions have additional open storage space in the center console.

The engine in the previous Toyota 86 was the only major criticism of that car.
It simply lacks grunt to complement the car’s flashy dynamics.
Fortunately, things improved in the new Toyota GR 86, torque increased from 151 lb-ft to 184 lb-ft, and power rose by 34 hp to 230 hp.
A new fuel injection system, redesigned air intake and manifold sharpened the throttle response as well.
More importantly, peak torque has been developed at 3,700 rpm instead of the 6,700 rpm of the previous GT86, making the engine more agile and powerful.
Cooling is also improved.

The new engine was designed by Subaru and, impressively, it is made lighter thanks to thinner cylinder liners, resin rocker covers and a redesigned water jacket, and it transmits power to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox.
Similar to the previous case, but changed in one touch seal, with a shorter throw, better synchronization and new bearings.
An automatic torque converter option is available.
Driving and performance impressions of the 2022 Toyota GR86
The 2022 Toyota GR86 offers light but precise laser electric power steering, there is very little body roll, and the GR86 quickly settles into a flat, pie-shaped position.
You feel the low center of gravity in every movement, and you feel very in tune with every movement of the car.
She has become very responsive.
It is also stable.
They come with Primacy tires as standard, and there is an option available with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 sports tires fitted to the vehicle.

I could feel the torque on the steep grades we were testing, with an ascent that would have required a change of gear or two, and GR easily got them into 4th gear.

And we found it was better than before, the pedals are well-balanced and the position is good.
The increased torque made it more enjoyable with greater smoothness.

The 2022 Toyota GR86 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, and if you choose automatic acceleration, it achieves it in 6.6 seconds, and the top speed is 140 mph.
The GR is mechanically identical to the Subaru BRZ and delivers similar performance numbers, but the Mazda MX-5 is slightly faster.
And if speed is your only concern, GR won’t suit you.

The 2022 Toyota GR86’s lighter weight makes it even more fun when the road is meandering.
And if your budget allows for more than $10,000, stay away from the 2022 Toyota GR86.
The GR Supra offers more in most cases, but if you don’t want to spend a lot and crave your gears, the 2022 Toyota GR86 wins.
The 2022 Toyota GR86 is a great sports car.
And the evolution in GR has made it more usable as well.
Thanks to the stiffer chassis and fluid-filled engine mounts, its refinement is greatly improved.
It has ample performance to keep up with the traffic without making you feel too strong or too fast on public roads.

Despite its flaws, the outgoing Toyota 86 was one of the most affordable sports car options we’d recommend for those who need a more practical Mazda Miata.
Toyota’s subtle upgrades to the exterior and interior made the GR 86 a more compelling overall package that we could easily drive every day, even with a manual transmission.
The new engine rises to the level of the rest of the car, delivering more usable torque and producing an exhaust sound worthy of the title of a sports car.
