Moving the headlights to the lower light assembly is an interesting idea, but I didn’t like those chrome pillars. Looking to the side and back, the design does not stand out and makes the crossover look somewhat anonymous.

The six-speed manual gearbox allows you to make the most of the engine’s free-revving nature. However, the gear shifting is not as good, and it reduces the ride smoothly at slow city speeds. And the installation of the CVT automatic transmission affects the performance of the engine, which revs up.

Not fast at all. Yes, it does feature a 152-hp 1.5-liter turbo-4, but the CVT is one of the 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross’s biggest frustrations. There’s plenty of lag between acceleration input and the car’s response, and passing maneuvers have to be planned in advance. But it delivers acceptable power and acceleration on the road.

The turbocharged engine that powers all Eclipse Cross models provides acceptable acceleration at low speeds. The horsepower rating is lower than in many competitors, but the ample amount of torque keeps the engine from feeling too underpowered in most driving situations. The CVT doesn’t impress you, but it works reasonably well.

A CVT transmission has no gears, and therefore “speeds”. The company has artificially tuned shift points to create the illusion of a slip-on transition, and the overall effect is that the Mitsubishi Eclipse isn’t powerful enough, its sporty looks don’t translate into sporty performance. And I felt the transmission resist its movement. But the car isn’t harsh, and I feel there’s noticeable body roll in corners, and the steering is lightweight and numb, making it good for city environments.

The steering is fairly light at low speeds, so maneuvering in a tight parking spot isn’t as good, and at highway speeds, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross’s suspension does a good job of smoothing out the bumps and ruts on the road.

You get good visibility from the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross thanks to the ride height, and the relatively thin A-pillars next to the windshield make it easy to spot traffic approaching intersections. The Mitsubishi’s thicker A-pillars and separate rear glass design make rear visibility not as good as on some other midsize SUVs. However, it’s still relatively easy to park, especially if you opt for the mid-range 3 model with front and rear parking sensors.

With the standard 18-inch wheels on the “3” and “4” grades, ride comfort is poor at low speeds. Expansion joints, cracks and other sharp obstacles cause noticeable suspension noises and occasional jolts that break the vehicle’s calmness. We suspect the smaller 16-inch wheels would make progress smoother, though, at higher highway speeds things get better.

Mitsubishi isn’t known for its lavish interiors, although they are firmly knit together. As for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2022, Mitsubishi introduced much more tactile keys, and relied on plastic materials that look much nicer. There’s also plenty of equipment in this interior that you might not expect in a car in this class, such as heated seats and steering wheel, and even a head-up display that projects information on a hinged panel above the dash.

If you are a taller driver, this HUD will be pretty useless, as it is not positioned enough to be fully visible to tall people. This is partly a fault of the slightly unusually high seating position, which does not allow the driver’s seat to drop sufficiently. Combine it with a steering wheel that isn’t completely driver-centric, and it looks like the entire seating position isn’t designed for taller customers. Overall, it’s not unpleasant, but it’s a little unusual.

The biggest and most obvious change is the multimedia system. It features an optional 8-inch touchscreen, mounted two inches closer to the driver, and the company also brought back the adjustment knobs, and got rid of the previous-generation system’s touch-sensitive sliders that nobody liked. It all looks modern and easy to use. And Mitsubishi made nicer materials for the dashboard, it certainly felt better than previous Mitsubishi efforts.

From the top of the doors to the dashboard itself, there’s a massive amount of squishy plastic, broken up by attractive piano black trim and metallic-effect inserts. Yes, you will find some cheaper plastics if you look for them, but they are not in areas you will touch regularly. The interior is on par with most competitors, but falls short of the fancy design of a Peugeot 3008, or the quality of a Skoda Karoq.

The Eclipse Cross’s budget-friendly nature doesn’t do it any favors when it comes to quality, with a bit of hard plastic around the cabin and the cabin design itself dated. But the seats for both the front and rear passengers are perfectly fine, and there’s no feedback for their comfort or discomfort.

The long body of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross means that there is plenty of space in the front seats for tall drivers to feel comfortable. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking and lane departure warnings. Blind-spot monitors, automatic high beams, and a surround-view camera system are also available. Only the top trim level is offered with adaptive cruise control, which is available as part of the Touring package. Eclipse Cross automatic braking only works at speeds up to 50 mph, SEL model. It adds radar to the system and allows it to operate at speeds of up to 110 mph.
