There are good reasons why the Toyota RAV4 is one of the best-selling cars of the Japanese manufacturer, as it is a practical and efficient SUV. And in its new version, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 continues the same tradition, with adequate interior design, an attractive base price, and reasonable road manners.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. But the acceleration is lacklustre, which is more than made up for by the fuel economy. It is available with a hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain, which we will review separately. The 2023 Toyota RAV4’s aggressive appearance allows it to be compared to the Tacoma and 4Runner.
The most capable off-road TRD model is made for the roughest terrain. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is suburban at its best , and its host of driver-assist technologies and desirable infotainment features help it boost its value over its competitors.
New Toyota RAV4 for 2023
This year, Toyota replaced the 2023 Toyota RAV4’s infotainment system with a more modern one with larger displays. 8.0-inches as standard, and a larger 10.5-inch screen is reserved for higher-end models.

Toyota’s software interface has been updated to be nicer and more intuitive, with over-the-air updates, wireless connectivity to two phone systems, and a 12.3-inch screen remains optional on XLE Premium and TRD Off-Road and standard on Limited.
The difference between the current and previous Toyota Rav4
Toyota overhauled the RAV4’s infotainment system for the 2023 model year. Granted, the new setup has simpler menus, and there are also new features like wireless connectivity, a virtual assistant (queue by saying “Hey Toyota”) and cloud-based navigation with over-the-air updates.
Toyota RAV4 2023 quality

Yes, the 2023 Toyota RAV4 is a great compact SUV. With a well-designed interior, with space for five passengers, it comes loaded with standard equipment and a wide range of safety features. It’s also comfortable to drive and very fuel efficient, and its four-cylinder engine – though a bit grumpy – delivers it without problems. A reasonable starting price and excellent reputation for reliability add to the RAV4’s appeal.
Major changes to the Toyota RAV4 over the past few model years:
2023: Updated infotainment system with larger touchscreens, wireless for two phone systems, and a fully available digital gauge cluster
2022: No changes of note
2021: No changes of note
2020: TRD off-road model introduced; Android Auto and satellite radio became standard
2019: Completely redesigned (beginning of the fifth generation) with stronger transmission, revamped interior and exterior design, larger touch screens, and more standard features
The exterior design of the Toyota RAV4 2023

This may not be the newest design out there, but the look of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 still looks great. It has just enough of the 4Runner and Tacoma, and the latest RAV4 gives the impression of being tougher than its car-like manners would suggest. It’s short, angular and fun, with a wide range of variation between trim levels.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4’s sharp front end wears all manner of cut-outs as well as complex LED headlights. On most versions, the blistering fenders with unpainted trim provide a strong and muscular look, and the large rear roof pillar gives it a sporty look. The Adventure and TRD off-road versions look just as tough, while the Prime models with a glossy bumper provide a more edgy look.
Interior cabin design of Toyota RAV4 2023

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is not the best choice for taller passengers. Those graceful lines on the outside lead to a limited interior space that exudes comfort and quality. The RAV4’s sleek windshield lets the light climb inward in an exciting relationship, which the available sunroof creates, reducing headroom even further.
Driving mode in Toyota RAV4 2023

Driving location, spaciousness and ease of entry and exit are all good. But the RAV4 scores a high driving position, and the front passenger seat is quite high, and it can be adjusted down. The front passenger seat is electrically adjustable only on Limited trim, and the driver’s seat and steering wheel adjust well, but taller drivers might want a little more adjustability. The outward visibility is commendable.
Toyota RAV4 2023 cabin dashboard
The dashboard also contains a few physical buttons and knobs. Most controls are well located, easy to adjust. The layout of the controls is intuitive, large and easy to read.

But the audio system and climate system controls are islands away, and everything else is put in place. The large, rubberized climate control knobs are also nice. Our only complaint is that the touchscreen is too far back from the driver.
The quality of materials in the interior of the Toyota RAV4 2023
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 doesn’t look as premium as some of the competitors, and the interior of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 has a clean look, feel solid and comfortable, from the oversized actuation to the climate controls to the many durable plastic surfaces.
Ruff should hold up well over time. Top-of-the-range models benefit from a few areas of soft-touch upholstery, and in general, there isn’t much difference between the cabin of the base model and that of a fully loaded model.
Toyota RAV4 2023 car seats
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is a two-row SUV with five seats. Cloth upholstery and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Options include faux leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power adjustments, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The RAV4’s front seats are reasonably soft and supportive, and the range of seat and steering wheel adjustments make it easy to find a comfortable driving position. There is plenty of head and legroom for adults to stretch out in both rows. Outer visibility is another plus, as the 2023 Toyota RAV4 offers great sight lines to the front, sides and rear.
Child seats in Toyota RAV4 2023
The RAV4 has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the outboard rear seats and a tether anchor for the rear center seat. The LATCH system is very easy to use. Parents with young children will appreciate the RAV4.

Safety seats are easy to locate and connect to lower vehicle seat anchors. Likewise, attaching to the 3 anchor tops is easy. Front seats and boosters fit easily, but installing an infant seat may require moving the front seat up.
The spaciousness and spaciousness of the Toyota Rav4 2023
There’s plenty of room for passengers and cargo in the 2023 RAV4. Some competitors have an extra inch or two of rear legroom, however, not much can be done in terms of interior design. Compared to new competitors such as the Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage,

And we don’t count the front seats among the most comfortable in the class, with the turn signal stem looking cheap, and where simulated leather is used for the higher trims, they feel really thin.
Storage space in Toyota RAV4 2023
The cabin has many shelves and bins to handle various road trip gear. If you plan to tow, certain versions of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is above average for a small SUV.

The cargo hold of the 2023 Toyota RAV4 is almost the largest in its class. There’s 37.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, and with the rear seats folded down, the space increases to 69.8 cubic feet. The load floor is low, and generally not class-leading, but large enough for most purposes.
Infotainment system in Toyota RAV4 2023
Toyota equipped the 2023 RAV4 with the latest infotainment system. This setup is displayed on a standard 8-inch touch screen, and an optional 10.5-inch touch screen. The screen has clear graphics, quick response, and simple menus.
Most of the features are easily accessible via the shortcut icons on the left side of the screen. You can also say “Hey Toyota,” followed by a command, and let the RAV4’s virtual assistant adjust the settings for you. Overall, this system is a huge improvement over the previous system.
Technological features of Toyota RAV4 2023
Standard infotainment features include an 8-inch touchscreen, dual phone integration, navigation, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a “Hey Toyota” virtual assistant, satellite radio, a two-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and three USB ports.

Other available features: 12.3-inch digital cluster, keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, sunroof and ambient lighting
JBL audio system in Toyota RAV4 2023
Lexus Mark Levinson and Toyota have a sound system by JBL. And both come from the same parent company – which also makes Harman Kardon, like in many BMWs, it’s a high-quality system.

The RAV4 offers a JBL high-definition system with 11 speakers/800 watts as standard on the Limited and optional on Adventure, XLE Premium, and TRD off-road models.
Digital rearview mirror for Toyota RAV4 2023
There are no rear pillars to get in the way, no passengers’ heads to block the view, and this “mirror” becomes a video screen projecting an unobstructed image behind the RAV4. It is an optional technology on higher models.
Toyota RAV4 2023 engine

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The engine sends its power to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is available.
Powertrain performance of the 2023 Toyota RAV4
The engine is not impressive, but it is suitable for the rigors of daily driving. And when you squeeze the RAV4 in, you’ll be ready to drive around town with reasonable gusto, and can pull from zero to 60 mph in a reasonable 8 seconds. And in our RAV4 Adventure test, the car needed 9.1 seconds to cover 0-60 mph, just a little slower than the class average.

Passing power is sufficient, passing and merging are drama-free. And the transmission doesn’t draw attention to itself with smooth, often quick gear changes. On the downside, the engine feels gritty at times, gruff under hard acceleration, and the grit gets worse after an hour or two on the road.
Driving impressions of the 2023 Toyota RAV4
We drove the 2023 Toyota RAV4 long enough to enable us to accurately identify all the details of the car, whether related to its performance on the road, or its launch and speed.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 pretty much impresses with its comfortable ride, handling, and gas mileage, and its engine provides enough power for daily driving, but feels rough at times.
Steering in Toyota RAV4 2023
The steering is vague at the center point and doesn’t have the right levels of feel and heft. It is easy to misjudge the level of your input. An updated, optional RAV4 all-wheel drive system includes rear-axle torque vectoring and more advanced traction control systems.

There are also selectable terrain settings and hill descent control. These systems, combined with a respectable ground clearance, give the Adventure above-average off-road capability for a small SUV.
Ride quality and driving comfort in the 2023 Toyota RAV4
The RAV4’s suspension is tuned for a good balance between handling and smoothness. The body doesn’t bind or float when driving over bumps, and small to medium impacts are absorbed without too much drama.

As for the front seats, they’re nicely sculpted and adequately padded, but the seat bottoms start to feel flat on long trips. Failure to adjust the passenger side can also make it difficult to find a comfortable position.
2023 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road Performance
The sculpted, dramatic design gives the RAV4 a look that’s ready for adventure. In our testing, we found it’s not great for off-roading, though the Adventure and TRD models are off-road. In an off-road SUV comparison test, the TRD ranked last. It’s not cut for off-road driving.

The point is, it’s clearly designed for tarmac, it’s no good for dirt and mountains, it has 8.6 inches of ground clearance, and it lacks off-road gear like a locking differential and low-range gears. In other words, it is an SUV that is more than capable of handling only snowy streets and dirt roads.
Suspension in the 2023 Toyota RAV4
The suspension is tuned for a good balance between control and smoothness. The body is not restricted or floated when driving over bumps, and small to medium impacts are absorbed without too much drama.” Its brakes are comfortably progressive, and it moves through bends obediently.

The TRD off-road model has all-terrain tires and a suspension that has differently tuned springs, shocks and shock stops. It also looks more adventurous thanks to the bronze wheels and mud flaps. Calibrated for everyday comfort.
Handling and stability in Toyota RAV4 2023
The suspension absorbs bumps and drops comfortably/ and does a good job of keeping the SUV stable when driving around turns. While the brakes provide smooth and reassuring stopping power, the ambiguity of the steering does not affect its movement in narrow streets and parking in narrow areas. But it appears somewhat fuzzy at highway speeds, making the SUV prone to wandering within its lane.
Noise and vibration in the 2023 Toyota RAV4
Like many Toyotas, the RAV4’s cabin lets in more road and wind noise than we’d like when driving at highway speeds.

We’ve found that better quality tires improve the situation and can also improve ride quality a notch or two. But having more sound insulation in the first place would have been nicer.
Braking in the 2023 Toyota RAV4
The Toyota RAV4’s driving demeanor is cool and calm. The ride quality is comfortable, it doesn’t lean or wobble too much around turns, and its brakes slow the SUV with confidence.
Towing capacity of Toyota Rav4 2023
Most Toyota RAV4 models can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped. An exception is the Adventure and TRD off-road models, which are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Fuel economy estimates for the rest of the range range from 25 to 27 mpg city and 32 to 35 mpg highway. Our all-wheel drive RAV gave us 32 mpg during our road test in fuel economy
