A detailed review of the 2023 Toyota Crown, advantages, disadvantages, specifications and prices

Will the unique proportions of the 2023 Toyota Crown breathe new life into a dying segment?

The 2023 Toyota Crown takes elements of the crossover’s style to attract more customers than the Avalon it replaces. The base XLE model comes with many features and excellent fuel economy. We consider the 2023 Toyota Crown an important model for Toyota. It was the first car to achieve huge sales for Toyota in the American market.

The 2023 Crown returns to compete in the full-size sedan segment, with a special trick up its sleeve. Unlike the Avalon, which has been discontinued, the 2023 Toyota Crown comes with standard hybrid power and a raised appearance that makes it look like a crossover. The history of the Crown plate dates back to 1955 in Japan. The 2023 Toyota Crown comes with a hybrid four-wheel drive engine, with 236 horsepower or 340 horsepower, depending on the model.

It looks like a semi-crossover with a roof line that’s 3.7 inches higher than the Camry , and the Crown’s ground clearance is 5.8 inches. In the Hybrid Max model, Toyota says it can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. To see if the Crown’s unique pedigree will breathe new life into a moribund segment, we tested the Crown on some beautiful country roads.

Toyota Crown 2023 quality

The Crown’s crossover cues affect its styling and commanding personality, and it’s less sporty than the luxury-focused Avalon, and headroom is compromised by its high seating position. It has good space, and offers a powerful new powertrain.

The 2023 Toyota Crown has been redesigned for its Japanese home market where it has been available as a luxury sedan for decades. To introduce to the world market with good design.

The exterior design of the Toyota Crown 2023

The 2023 Toyota Crown features a fastback body with crosshairs that add some awkward lines. The crossover profile gives this sedan an exotic look, and creates some awkward lines on the Crown. It is neither attractive nor bad inside and out. In short, the design gives the car the appearance of an elevated sedan fastback.

Up front, the Crown takes on the latest wide-slit grille to permeate Toyota’s range. The Crown’s nose is adorned with a wide, Toyota Venza-inspired grille with a bit of hyperbole. It is topped by an eye line flanked by slim headlights. The wings received raised rear fenders, lower trim, and a black pocket along the lower doors. The body trim cuts around the wheel wells and the lower section adds some SUV-like cues.

The design is almost elegant from the sculpted sides, although it’s a bit out of proportion due to the high shoulder line and tall roof. The new Crown appears as an elevated sedan, the car’s shoulder line has been raised to allow the roof to be raised while still balancing the side profile without creating a roof-top appearance that resembles the iconic Camry’s roofline.

A rounded rear end with an inset of the rear fenders completes the look. This interior rear can be black as part of a two-tone paint option that also adds black to the hood and eyeliner around the headlights.

Dimensions of Toyota Crown 2023

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 7

The Crown is a strange, hard-to-describe duck, measuring 60.6 inches long, 3.7 inches longer than the Camry. We only have 5.8 inches of ground clearance, and the Crown’s added height comes primarily from a longer beltline, not a significantly lifted suspension.

Toyota Crown 2023 body

2023 Toyota Crown

Toyota will be offered in three different body styles in global markets, including a conventional sedan and two SUVs, but this exotic pseudo-sedan is the only one confirmed for the US market.

2023 Toyota Camry colors

The Crown looks futuristic and luxurious, especially in the new two-tone Bronze paint. And a large percentage of them come in two colors, to give them a sporty look. It is decorated with standard 19-inch wheels, while the upper tires reach 21 inches.

Interior cabin design for Toyota Crown 2023

The Crown is smartly designed, but it lacks the styling appeal and some of the soft-touch surfaces of the Avalon it replaces. The cabin of the Crown is very similar to that of a Lexus. And the cabin doesn’t quite measure up to its successor in interior quality. They have stiffer plastics and fewer soft-touch surfaces.

The dashboard has horizontal stripes and a large 12.3-inch center screen with a lid that flows into the digital instrument cluster box. Really clever design. The center display and controls are easy to access and operate, and the center console has a vertical smartphone charging pocket, two cup holders and a good-sized console box.

Toyota Crown 2023 seats

2023 Toyota Crown 28 Crown

The Limited and Platinum grades offer heated/ventilated leather seats in black or black with chestnut and macadamia, but the base model XLE offers seats in black woven cloth. This high-quality fabric is reminiscent of the Century Wool Seats. They are soft to the touch and breathe better than leather.

Spaciousness and spaciousness in Toyota Crown 2023

Crown does not excel in interior space or materials. It can comfortably seat five. And the 2023 Toyota Crown defies head room and fails to meet quality standards. Where the design affects its interior space. With its high seating position and sloping roofline, front and rear headroom is limited for tall people.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 9

Legroom is plentiful in both seating rows, the front seats are comfortable, while the rear seat has ample thigh support for longer trips. The trunk has a decent 15.2 cubic feet of space, which can be increased by folding the rear seats in a 60/40 split.

Information, entertainment and communication

Standard across the range, the Crown’s 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is powered by the latest, much-improved software interface. The system matches smartphones via a wireless connection. A second 12.3-inch display contains digital gauges in front of the driver.

2023 Toyota Crown

The Crown has features such as a wireless smartphone charging pad, Wi-Fi, and USB-C ports. The base XLE model comes with six stereo speakers, but the Limited and Platinum models get 11 JBL stereo speakers. The JBL didn’t impress me, however, as it lacks the richness of setup like the Avalon.

Toyota Crown 2023 engine

All three Crown models come standard with hybrid power, but two distinct systems are available. The XLE and Limited grades include the familiar fourth-generation Toyota Hybrid with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. This system sends 236 horsepower to the all-wheel-drive line-up through an eCVT automatic continuously variable transmission.

2023 Toyota Crown 6

Only the Platinum trim gets Toyota’s new Hybrid MAX configuration, which features a turbocharged, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Backed by a front electric motor and a rear axle, the Hybrid MAX system delivers 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque to an all-wheel drive system that can split power from 70:30 to 20:80. This system uses a six-speed automatic transmission, which completely changes the driving experience.

Hybrid powertrain performance in the 2023 Toyota Crown

The Crown pulls off fast enough, Toyota says it will hit 60 mph in a perfectly acceptable 7.6 seconds. The Platinum model, with its more powerful setup, is noticeably more agile, earning an estimated 5.7-second sprint from zero to 60 mph. The suspension has been tuned for a comfortable ride, so don’t expect cornering slams, but the Platinum trim comes with adaptive dampers that add to the punch.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 33

If you value fuel economy, the standard hybrid offers the most efficiency, with 42/41/41 mpg city/highway/combined, and in the Platinum model, fuel economy drops to (29/32/30). It’s not impressive.

Driving impressions of the 2023 Toyota Crown

The Toyota Crown drives well but lacks any sporty appeal.
The Crown’s base engine provides just decent acceleration. Smooth driving is the strength of the car. That earns it a modest 6 here.

Four-wheel drive system in Toyota Crown 2023

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 14

Both Crown Hybrid systems use an engine to power the front wheels and a rear engine to provide all-wheel drive. On base models, the system can drive the front wheels exclusively or send up to 80% of the power to the rear. The Hybrid Max system in the Platinum model varies the torque between 70/30 front and 20/80 rear.

Toyota Crown 2023 speed

Crown buyers have a choice: decent power with good fuel economy or good power with decent fuel economy. In its base model, its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is powered by two electric motors, one front and one rear, for a total of 236 hp. And it delivers decent speed, with a 0-60mph time of under 8 seconds. But it’s a small price to pay for the fuel economy costs.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 43

The Hybrid Max is very fast. It combines a 2.4-liter turbo-4 engine with front and rear engines to produce 340 horsepower, and slashes the 0-60 mph time to 5.9 seconds. Power flows through a 6-speed direct-shift transmission that can be shifted manually via steering wheel paddles, so the downshifts are much like other automatic transmissions. It has good traction in any rev range, making it easy to skip on the highway.

Driving modes in the 2023 Toyota Crown

The base Crown features three driving modes: Normal Economy, Sport and EV, and electric mode allows for short periods of low-speed electric driving.

2023 Toyota Crown 51 1

The Platinum model with the Hybrid Max package loses the electric drive mode, but gains Sport +, Comfort and Custom modes. Sport modes make it easy to power through without feeling too jittery.

Noise in Toyota Crown 2023

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 31

Each crown contains acoustic glass and a sound-absorbing cushion between the engine and cabin, and engineers have worked to seal sound paths around door frames, window openings, wiring and other areas. All of which block noise well and create a quiet environment.

Suspension in the 2023 Toyota Crown

Crown shares its TNGA-K platform with crossovers. It has MacPherson strut front suspension and independent multi-link rear suspension, and its elevated seating position makes it handle more like a crossover than a sedan. To take a slim shape in corners, turns and occasional up and down movements due to bumps and cracks.

2023 Toyota Crown 34

In terms of its behavior, the Crown tends to push rather than spin when driving fast into a corner, and it makes it unsportsmanlike. But it’s still very pleasant and the ride is always smooth, even with the adaptive dampers available in its sporty surroundings. And the Crown won’t push you like a typical sedan.

Handling and stability in Toyota Crown 2023

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 21 1

If you’re looking for a soft, comfortable cruiser, the Crown is for you; It floats above road imperfections, especially when equipped with Platinum’s adaptive variable suspension.

Steering in Toyota Crown 2023

Its steering is precise, but of course, don’t think this lifted sedan won’t challenge the Kia Stinger on a winding road. But I felt relatively confident in its handling, although I imagine the standard height version being offered in Japan would provide a more refined driving experience. In a straight line, the standard hybrid system feels like any previous Toyota hybrid you’ve driven.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 24

It’s a great Crown when it’s driven quietly, but it seems nervous when it wants to go fast. As for the Hybrid Max system, it differs in that the transmission adds the actual transmission, and you do not have to hear the engine groan under the hard acceleration. Shifts also add greater connection to the car, and the boost in power makes a big difference when getting ready to speed or executing a traffic manoeuvre.

Fuel economy of Toyota Crown 2023

The EPA estimates the Crown with a base hybrid powertrain can get 42 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 26

The Platinum’s more powerful HybridMax powertrain delivers around 29 mpg city and 32 mpg highway.

Value for money Toyota Crown 2023

The XLE model starts at $39,950, which is more expensive than the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Kia Stinger, and Nissan Maxima, and less than the Volkswagen Arteon. But since none of these vehicles offer a hybrid drivetrain, the Crown is in a class of its own. Stepping up to the Limited model will cost you $45,550, with a more luxurious interior and technology.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 30

If you want the Hybrid Max, the only way to get it is to go up for the Platinum model for $52,350. It’s more expensive than the Lexus ES Hybrid, but the Crown’s power is significantly higher.

Toyota Crown 2023 prices fully loaded

A fully loaded Platinum model costs $53,445 and includes the most powerful Hybrid Max system, adaptive dampers, 21-inch wheels, digital key, and a surround camera system.

Toyota Crown 2023 warranty

The Crown has a good 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty and an 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid powertrain warranty, and Toyota offers its Crown two years and 25,000 miles of free maintenance.

Features of Toyota Crown 2023

Our opinions about Crown are mixed. On the plus side, it rides well and serves as a commendable alternative to the Avalon in the limited market for full-size sedans. The standard hybrid system may not be fast, but it delivers excellent fuel economy without completely compromising performance.

Crown 2023 Toyota Crown 0 27

Meanwhile, the optional Hybrid Max delivers acceleration we’ve never felt from a Toyota hybrid before while we managed to average 30 mpg in our testing.

Disadvantages of Toyota Crown 2023

As for the negatives, the Crown’s unique proportions won’t please everyone, and the price makes it stand out. Its practicality is also somewhat limited, and since the Crown has the trunk of a conventional sedan, 15.2 cubic feet of cargo space isn’t good, but it’s far less than the Arteon and Stinger.
