Infotainment for the 2022 Hyundai i20 N
All-digital instruments come standard, an unusual affair that will make enthusiasts feel right at home, with various display settings in several ways to show everything from a G-Force’s cornering to how much brake pressure is applied. A small percentage of the services are managed by the buttons, and while we evaluate the screen graphics and accuracy, I found the software to be below the level of Hyundai’s software. It takes a lot of time to boot up which is very frustrating.

We like some of the additional physical shortcut buttons for the infotainment system, because the touch-sensitive buttons under the 10.3-inch touchscreen aren’t easy, but the software is unusually slow for a Hyundai. The time it takes to boot up after turning on the ignition and wait for it to respond after making the selections is very frustrating.
Storage space in the 2022 Hyundai i20 N
Storage is very convenient for such a small car, with a cubby under the dashboard, a Qi wireless charger, cup holders between the front seats, and a cubbyhole under the armrest. With bottle holders in the front and rear doors as well, there’s enough room for two adults in the back—less than the Polo, and larger than the smaller Fiesta and a decent 310-liter boot that fits 1,123 liters with the rear seats folded.

The i20 N features a 1.6-liter T-GDi four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, with rated outputs of 150 kW (5500-6000 rpm) and 275 Nm (1750-4500 rpm). How is driving a 2022 Hyundai i20 N?
Run that little engine and you’ll hear a surprisingly loud barking from the exhaust. The Hyundai N has become famous for the emotive sound of its cars, and the i20 N is no different. Our experience lasted 150 km and we passed several urban roads, highways and winding roads.

Within the city, the i20 N is a very handy companion, with appropriate seating and suspension comfort as well as variable steering weight across different driving modes. However, I did find that the clutch take-off point is a bit high and the pedal itself is quite springy, so you may sometimes find yourself misjudging take-off.
With peak torque at 1,750 rpm, performance at urban speeds is easy, and highway speeds is easy despite being a small car. But it never gets nervous at high speeds, the road holding is excellent and it inspires confidence at 110 km/h on highways or off-road country. It also turns out that wrapping the body in bends is good.

Shifting between gears is very easy, although at 110 km/h in the sixth the engine sprints at about 3000 rpm. If you had the car in N mode, you might find the exhaust mode a bit buoyant at these speeds, but I didn’t mind that.

The sharp cornering and direct, contact steering, plus that tricky mechanical difference at the front mean there’s seemingly unlimited grip up front and really gives you the confidence to move forward. My only real complaint was that the firmer ride and rumbling tires over some of the rough surfaces meant driving long distances would be tiring. This might make sense for a light city hatchback.
It is so well-tuned in all respects that it shrinks around you and clearly conveys what is going on. I have always felt like I had a clear idea of what was going on beneath me, and every input was met with a predictable output.
Summary and judgment
With these communicative controls and a launch package that offers plenty of stability, and speaking of launches, the i20N comes with Launch Control as standard. Its brakes are very capable, both in terms of stopping distance and pedal feel, but heavy braking can cause the rear end to rise alarmingly. The Fiesta ST is more stable.

The mechanical front diff never once failed to shift torque to the outside wheel to ensure the car headed where it was headed. It has so much stability and feedback that you can pretty much just aim and shoot. Brilliant manual shift functionality and speed alignment also make you feel like a champ every time you slide down a corner.

Go more aggressive with the stability and traction control in their track settings and you can get a little extra take off and adjust the i20 N’s mid-angle to get it moving. It is a very fun but also predictable game so you will never feel like you are going to lose control.
