The new Aston Martin Vantage 2023 will be the last in its line, and the last car to carry a V12 engine, it is the largest engines the company has put in its smallest sports car. Only 333 cars will be produced for all markets, and Aston has not released an official price for the car, and we know it could be close to $300,000.

The V-12 returns to the Vantage lineup for 2023 and is a massive, twin-turbocharged engine that makes 690 horsepower. A twin-turbo V-12 engine is offered on coupe and roadster models, and a special aerodynamics package has been added for greater downforce. It can reach 60 mph in 3.4 seconds.

The most obvious competitor in this category is the Porsche 911 Carrera. The Vantage is closer to Jaguar’s F-Type in its most powerful form.

If the square steering wheel doesn’t grab your immediate attention, the dense array of buttons in the center of the dashboard is sure to. But it’s crowded, and you need to check to pick the right button. The doors open at a slight upward angle, to remove high barriers, and to facilitate entry and exit. The driver and taller passengers find enough legroom, while headroom suffers.
The quality of materials in the interior of the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
The cabin greets you with high-end materials and endless options. Like premium leather, heated and ventilated seats, a carbon fiber steering wheel, embroidered headrests, and many different options for interior trim, you get a leather- and suede-lined cockpit.
Lift the lid of the storage compartment between the front seats and you’ll find cheap plastic, and the 12-volt plug cap is the same as a Ford from the past two decades. But I liked the Mercedes-Benz-derived column stems.

The 2023 Aston Martin Vantage’s sports seats are exceptionally comfortable and supportive. With many modifications, everyone is comfortable. The center air vents also provided a lot of adjustability because they didn’t direct enough air directly to the occupants.
The climate control works well enough with the top, but the small buttons are hard to read at a quick glance. Power-adjustable seats and memory settings are standard. But its luxury experience is dwarfed by poor highway noise isolation.

The trunk has a volume of 350 liters, which is good, just not the best compared to its competitors. But the hatchback design makes this space more useful, but it has a disadvantage in the high trunk lip where you need to lift and drop luggage. Lined with plush carpeting, the box can easily hold a golf bag or a week’s worth of groceries without a problem.
This useful trunk, plus a compliant cabin, means the Vantage is a potentially more usable day-to-day offering than many of its mid-engined competition. The BMW M8 Convertible offers a larger trunk (12.4 cubic feet) than the Vantage Roadster.
Technology in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
Clearly, Aston Martin doesn’t have much to do. The infotainment system is based on an old Mercedes-Benz system, and the company’s designers made things worse than they should be. They put the modestly sized screen away, and the control knob doesn’t have enough space around the sides for effective operation.
On the plus side, I found our test car’s premium audio system to be excellent, with power and clarity. But it lacks smartphone integration. And the Vantage lacks the latest in advanced driver aids, too. Blind spot warning and a surround-view camera system are useful, but adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning aren’t available.
Bluetooth, DAB, navigation, entertainment options and more are controlled through the screen, many of which can be managed via the right-hand display and steering wheel-mounted controls. Logically, Aston Martin has left all seat, air conditioning and ventilation controls off screen operation, with banks of switches and knobs taking over.
Infotainment system in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
In the realm of touch screens, the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage is a bit traditional in its infotainment display. The central 8-inch display is small and operated by a rotating dial and touchpad under the gearshift tunnel. It’s the same Mercedes-Benz system with an illuminated Aston Martin front.
Submenus and HD graphics are not as good as when you are on a smartphone in your pocket. It works well enough with a little practice, and it’s light years ahead of the terrible system Aston Martin used to offer in its cars. And connecting your phone to it is not available. And the infotainment system looks like spare parts from the previous generation Mercedes, it’s woefully outdated.

Under the clamshell hood of the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage resides either a thrilling 4.0-litre V-8 or a monster 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12. The base V-8 develops either 503 or 528 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque. The top-of-the-line V-8 is reserved for the track-inspired F1 version. The V-12 engine produces 690 horsepower.
Aston claims the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage is capable of 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds, which I think is a conservative estimate. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a seven-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission, the automatic being reserved for the F1 version.
2023 Aston Martin Vantage Powertrain Performance
Driving the F1 Vantage on the track, I discovered a charged driving experience. But I found that using a manual transmission on the regular model creates a cleaner connection with the powertrain than an automatic, and also has the added performance benefit of removing 209 pounds from its weight. And the Vantage V-8 sounds lovely, starting with a low baritone rumble at idle and ending with a high-pitched shriek as the engine nears its redline.
510 horsepower, produced at 6,000 rpm, and its twin-turbocharged technology means there’s plenty of low-end response. Also, peak torque of 685 Nm is produced at 2,000 rpm. Adding to this is the sports exhaust, which Aston has tuned to give every kind of rattle, shriek and rip when you hit the accelerator. Exciting to hear that sound.
You can orchestrate all that drama with either the eight-speed automatic transmission, or the seven-speed manual. Neither is perfect, the car lacks better responsiveness than its competitors, but it’s still incredibly quick to shift, and the manual transmission is a bit stubborn, with real patience and skill required to get the best out of it.
Driving impressions of the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage

Compared to mass-produced sports coupes, the Vantage delivers strong, but not impressive performance. The sharp handling and turbocharged V8 engine might impress most drivers. Those wanting more can opt for the new V12 Vantage engine, which uses in-house developed 12-cylinder engines to produce nearly 700 horsepower. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The suspension manages the difficult task of precisely controlling, with both body and wheel roll, to achieve acceptable ride quality for such an overtly sporty car. But harsh bumps will be evident to occupants no matter which drive mode the adaptive dampers are selected for.
Inevitably, the combination of a chassis designed to handle such an impressive output of power, allied to huge wheels covered in rubber-band thin tires, means the occasional bump or crash on the worst of surfaces, but overall, the ride is commendably good.

The optional carbon-ceramic brakes are less friendly in everyday driving. While they are excellent on the racetrack and can be recruited for on-track duties, the upgraded, grippy brakes may not be for everyday use. I got behind the wheel of a Vantage Roadstar, and loved its personality as well as its ability to transition between a sporty and loafing act.

Road noise from the high-performance tires is certainly noticeable, there is little tire noise on the highway, and those accustomed to cars of this type will not be affected by it. But the ride quality spoils the experience the most. The Vantage lacks the comfort, elegance and body control we celebrate in similar cars like the BMW M8.
The manual transmission is noisier than the automatic, with a bit of gear whine at lower speeds, while sitting in idle mode has the slight back-pounding of the clutch release bearing making itself audible in the cabin. Unlike the old manual transmission which was more suited to mechanical sounds.
The handling and stability of the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
Torque vectoring, electronic stability and traction control make it an easy car to drive, whether on road or track. The chassis balance and near-perfect weight distribution help balance it out. And they make the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage an extremely attractive driver’s car.
The short wheelbase, coupled with the sophisticated limited slip differential allows you to control the car electronically, I liked the well-controlled electronic stability aids, and really enjoy the Vantage’s dynamic talents without feeling constrained.
Steering in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
Steering weight is excellent, and that heft is backed up with a bit of feel, the front wheels are responsive, and the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage proves to be very agile, despite its not insignificant weight.
The manual-equipped car operates without the electronically controlled automatic limited-slip differential, and instead gets mechanically simpler. This comes at the expense of its full potential. But you are unlikely to ever notice this on the road, as a manual car provides an immersive driving experience.
Polishing levels of the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
The sports car’s aural feel is a big part of the overall experience and the Vantage didn’t disappoint. It makes all the right sounds and, crucially, at the right time. For all the drama of the engine, it calms down on the odd fender lift or rattle and settles for a small smile on the highway.

The base Vantage Roadster uses a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that makes 503 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The V8 was sourced from Mercedes-AMG and it looks absolutely fantastic as it propels the Vantage from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds. While the more efficient F1 Edition model hits 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.
Steering in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster
While it’s neither as aerodynamically gifted as an all-around sports car nor as comfortable as some other GTs, the Vantage Roadster strikes a nice balance between the two. In Track mode, the driver can initiate some oversteer on the push, which, combined with the very light and precise steering, is what makes the Vantage even more fun. Although hood shake hasn’t been completely eliminated from the convertible’s bodywork.
Stability in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage Roadster
Regular output is noisy, and the Roadster’s engine works hard at low revs, but doesn’t develop muscular bass frequencies. It provides good dynamic behavior for the car. Although the V12 Roadster sits on stiffer springs than its V-8 sibling, it is 50 percent stiffer in the front and 40 percent in the rear, and of course the V12 Vantage engine still feels impressively agile on rough surfaces. And the adjustable dampers don’t feel too harsh.

On smooth surfaces, the 2023 Vantage Roadster is perfectly comfortable and civilized, but rougher bumps carry over into the cabin, and road noise isn’t completely eliminated. Lowering the roof is obviously fun on sunny days but will make it more difficult to carry on a conversation with the passenger at higher speeds. And we recommend keeping the roof close if you want to reach the top speed of 190 mph.
Economy in the 2023 Aston Martin Vantage
Not all Vantage versions are as fuel-hungry as their potent V-8 would suggest, especially with the automatic transmission. The EPA estimates that models with the automatic achieve 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Versions paired with the manual transmission achieve 14 mpg city and 21 highway. But we haven’t been able to test these numbers in the real world.

Cars like the Aston Martin Vantage are highly specialized, built in very small numbers and don’t appear on the radar of crash-testing agencies. To be sold all over the world, or various global crash tests, but at least it’s safe.
