2022 Volkswagen Jetta review: The Goldilocks Compact
The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta’s modest design and compact size don’t fool you into thinking it’s just a cheap sedan that doesn’t fit. The Volkswagen Jetta has outlived most of its competitors, and it confirms that compact sedans still matter in a world dominated by crossovers and SUVs.
Price: The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta starts at $20,195, with the sports-minded Jetta GLI beginning at $30,995.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta has received several updates, the most important of which is a 158-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, and two transmissions, one of which is a 6-speed manual and the other is an 8-speed automatic. With a liberal dose of technology such as a digital cockpit, an acceptable price starts at over $20,000.
The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is a very impressive bargain, with ample space, quality, luxury and drivability, thanks to the MQB platform it supports. But it’s not without flaws, as the latest generation of its competitors are more spacious, faster and more luxurious. But the Jetta is the one who strikes the perfect balance between all the traits in the right way.
Cars that compete with Volkswagen Jetta 2022
Jetta wrestles Hyundai Elantra, Kia K5, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic Sedan. We will compare it with its main competitors in the global car market.
New Volkswagen Jetta for 2022

Volkswagen has made a slew of improvements to the 2022 Jetta as part of the mid-life refresh. The biggest upgrade is the 158 hp 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 11 hp more than the previous engine, and the all-new Sport Sport model has replaced the R-Line model and the SEL Premium model has been discontinued altogether.

Volkswagen Jetta 2022 exterior design
Volkswagen applied several revisions to the exterior of the Jetta for the new year with the aim of refining its design to fend off new competitors.

The updated front grille gets four chrome crossbars (black for Sport), two thicker outer bars, and two thin inner strips that flow into the LED headlight housings on either side, creating a bypass effect with the signature LEDs. The new grille is emphasized by a lower air intake and revised fascia.
In the S, SE and SEL models, Volkswagen has given the Jetta a chrome finish on the sides, while the side-view mirrors and window surrounds are decorated with a black finish on the SPORT model. The SEL model has a panoramic glass sunroof. While the Model S rides on 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels, the rest of the range is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels.
Volkswagen Jetta 2022 dimensions

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is classified as a compact four-door sedan, with an overall body length of 186.5 inches with a wheelbase of 105.7 inches. It is 57.7 inches high and 70.8 inches wide excluding mirrors. Its lowest weight is 2,915 pounds, and the highest weight is 3,060 pounds.
Powertrain for Volkswagen Jetta 2022
The new 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine gave the Jetta some much-needed extra power. With 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of low torque, output is channeled through a six-speed manual gearbox on S and Sport models, or via an eight-speed automatic on SE and SEL models and all-wheel drive combination.

Adjusting the engine’s lower torque resulted in increased acceleration, however, the engine exhibits the lowest turbo lag ever, and the engine operates effectively and efficiently in combination with the transmissions. The manual transmission is fine, but with not a ton of power and a fair amount of weight, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta isn’t as lively as other compact sedans.
Volkswagen Jetta 2022 engine performance
The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta engine is borrowed from the new Volkswagen Taos. More power and lower torque for the Jetta family. Power is sent to the front-wheel drive treatments, while the Mazda 3 and Subaru Impreza have an all-wheel drive option. The new powertrain improved acceleration by a small margin. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of just 127 mph.

The Sports model focuses on performance, and gets an XDS differential that sharpens its maneuverability, and the 228-horsepower Jetta GLI is even sportier, rushes in six seconds from 0-60 mph and is sharper in maneuverability. We will review it separately.
Driving impressions of the Volkswagen Jetta 2022
The Jetta’s quiet driving character is indicative of its purpose as a passenger car, keeping enthusiasts delighted with the GLI. Driving a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta isn’t fun, nor should it be exciting. They are ideal for getting around town with their fuel efficiency and light handling. It does take a while to get up quickly on the highway, but once you get off the ride will be fun and fairly smooth.

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta handles most road bumps and dents adequately but the bigger speed bumps permeate the cabin, especially from the rear thanks to the torsion beam rear suspension setup.

Its steering is suitably light, despite its lack of precision, making the Jetta easier to drive and maneuver around narrow streets and parking lots. There is also some body roll around corners and turns, but the steering tightens it appropriately to make for better handling.

With the added traction provided by its XDS differential, the Jetta Sport feels a little more precise when it comes to carving corners and turns, but the upgrades are minimal on this model, and the competition feels more dynamic talent.
Fuel consumption in a Volkswagen Jetta 2022
The Jetta has always been an economical car, and Volkswagen has improved its efficiency even further with the new 1.5-liter engine. The S and Sport models with a manual transmission are less efficient in city, but better on the highway and for 29/43/34 mpg city/highway/combined, they are more efficient than last year’s model.

The automatic transmission results in improved fuel economy numbers on S and Sport models to 31/41/35 mpg. But the SE and SEL models are heavier, bringing efficiency down to 29/40/33 mpg. As for Jetta competitors, such as Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic, they are more economical. The Jetta’s fuel tank holds 13.2 gallons, enough for 459 miles.
Interior Design For Volkswagen Jetta 2022
Volkswagen updated the Jetta’s interior, giving it a contemporary 8-inch screen. Accompanied by a short list of design and material upgrades implemented across the entire 2022 Volkswagen Jetta lineup, including accentuating the upper dashboard, transmission housing, center armrest, doors and patterned cloth seat upholstery.

The doors are lined with faux leather inserts, with ceramic seams. The Jetta gave it a modern and upscale look and feel, and new improvements reinforce that impression. The design remains very driver-focused and comfortable. So much so, that the Jetta is better than the new Golf GTI, even though the Golf is newer and more expensive.
The spaciousness and spaciousness of the Volkswagen Jetta 2022
The Volkswagen Jetta seats 5 passengers, has 38.5 inches of front headroom and 41.1 inches of legroom. The three rear seat passengers have 37.2 inches of headroom and 37.4 inches of legroom, which isn’t a good fit for tall people.

The seats are all supportive, spacious and comfortable even in the lower S-Class, but the Comfort Sport seats in the Sport trim and higher are definitely better. In terms of visibility, the Jetta gives the driver a seat that allows him to have a good outside view, and both front seats are adjustable in six directions; Manual in lower grades and electric on top, some models give the driver 8-way adjustment. The wide doors also facilitate easy entry and exit to and from the seats.
Quality of interior materials for Volkswagen Jetta 2022
Volkswagen has done well to improve the appearance of the Jetta by adding some design improvements and better materials. But in lower trims, the vinyl steering wheel draws attention to the other plastics and hard-touch materials in the cabin.

The seats are upholstered in a luxurious, somewhat elegant fabric. Some models come with V-Tex leather upholstery, and genuine leather seats can be had in three colours.
Storage space in a Volkswagen Jetta 2022
The Jetta’s 14.1-cubic-foot luggage compartment makes it a practical sedan, but it’s not the best in its compact class. The trunk of the Civic sedan and Elantra is larger, and the Jetta’s rear seats fold 60/40.

The storage space in the cabin of the Jetta is spacious but not overly generous. With large door pockets, two cup holders in front, a storage tray in front of the transmission, and a narrow tray next to the cup holders, it’s all practical, but the glove boxes and armrest are small.

Quality Volkswagen Jetta 2022
Many manufacturers have moved on to full lineups of crossovers and SUVs, and we can appreciate Volkswagen’s hold on the Jetta sedan, but despite the improvements for 2022, the Jetta lacks things like the Pekia K5, Hyundai Elantra, and Mazda3 that have moved up to a high level in terms of quality, features and performance. The Civic became a more spacious and mature sedan, and the Jetta stayed behind.

Yes, the Jetta is decently spacious, relatively light on petrol, and handles well. But its technology is outdated, the materials aren’t quite right, it doesn’t do anything better than its competitors but it does hold the stick by the half, or what can be described as reliability, it rests on its laurels.
Volkswagen Jetta 2022 Prices
Volkswagen cleverly offers a Jetta at an affordable price to the compact car segment. The Jetta S costs $20365, and the Sport Class $21,265. The Jetta SE with amenities costs $24,095. A high-spec Jetta SEL priced at $28,095.
Additional Packages for Volkswagen Jetta 2022
Volkswagen does not offer many optional packages for the Jetta. Limited to the automatic transmission option, the IQ.Drive package costs $955 and installs adaptive cruise control with forward assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and emergency assistance.

The manual-equipped versions have a similar driver assistance package that lacks the emergency assistance function. This comfort package combines the same features with the auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather steering wheel and gear knob, and automatic wipers.
Volkswagen Jetta 2022 fights comparison battles
Volkswagen Jetta vs Honda Civic Sedan
For driving enthusiasts, the Honda Civic is a no-brainer compared to the Volkswagen Jetta. It is simply the best driver’s car, and perhaps the best looking sedan. Its 2.0-liter 158-horsepower engine puts it on par with the Jetta, but the 180-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder in the high-spec Civic puts the Jetta behind in power and versatility.

Regardless of the powertrain, the Honda Civic boasts faster acceleration, and much better handling dynamics. With fuel economy returns between 33 and 36 mpg in the Civic, it’s also impressively efficient.
2019 Honda Civic Sedan Touring vs. Volkswagen Jetta 2022 Volkswagen Jetta

2019 Honda Civic Sedan Touring vs. Volkswagen Jetta 2022 Volkswagen Jetta
Both cars are both spacious and practical, but the Civic has a slightly larger trunk and more comfortable rear seats. At the other end of the spectrum, the higher-spec Civic is priced similarly to a higher-spec Jetta but comes with a much better infotainment system and a few driver aids. The bottom line is that the Civic has a lot to offer.
Volkswagen Jetta vs Volkswagen Passat 2022
First of all, the mid-sized Passat is dead in some markets. Secondly, the Passat is still based on an older, previous-generation platform. This gives it more interior space than competitors and a much larger Jetta, but it’s not contemporary. It is powered by 174 horsepower generated by a turbocharged engine, which is much stronger and faster than a Jetta.

Being the most expensive and largest car, the Passat is equipped with a greater range of amenities. But the Jetta looks like a luxury car with a more modern and comfortable exterior and interior design. But the price of the high-spec Jetta is slightly lower than the high-spec Passat.
