Child seats in the car must have fixed side edges (German news agency) One has to buy seats for young children when taking them with him in the car so that they can enjoy safety and security while walking, but Andreas Ratzick – from the Technical Center of the Automobile Club – advises parents before Purchase taking into account that the child seat is equipped with backrests and firm side edges.
The Automobile Club – which is based in the German city of Munich – conducted a test of about 33 children’s seats in cooperation with the Goods and Products Testing Authority in the capital, Berlin, and its results showed that five seats received a “poor” evaluation, including three seats for children whose weight ranges from 15 to 36 kg for the “II/III” category. The reason is that these seats do not have backrests with side edges, or are equipped with them but are removable, and therefore these seats do not provide sufficient protection for the child in the event of a side collision.
For years, Auto Club experts have criticized the failure to carry out side crash tests for child seats that have received official approval under the European Standard “ECE-R 44-04”.
It is noteworthy that the increased risk of injury in the case of side collisions is greater than the usual frontal collisions, because the sides of the car include a relatively small amount of places designated for crushing and shock absorption.
No guarantee of price
The test results also showed that a high price is not a guarantee of quality, as two expensive child seats received a “poor” rating, as the cost of the first seat was 261 USD for children weighing 18 kg category “0/I”, and the cost of the seat The other amounted to $336, and aims to provide protection for children weighing 9 to 36 kg, category I/II/III.
Experts attributed the reason for these seats receiving a “weak” rating to the fact that they did not provide sufficient protection for children in frontal collisions, as the seat belts in the first type were loosened, while in the second the seat fixing elements were loosened.
It should be noted that the cost of the seats that were tested ranged between 68 and 437 US dollars.
In addition to the previous five types – which did not pass this test – 17 types received a rating of “Very Good”, 10 other child seats received a “Good” rating, and one type received an “Acceptable” rating.
These seats have been tested from several aspects, such as in terms of safety and security, method of use, practical properties, the percentage of harmful substances and pollutants, as well as the extent of equipment and method of cleaning.
It is remarkable that improvements have been made to two types of child seats, after they received a “weak” evaluation last October due to the high level of pollution in them.
Now the Automobile Club and the Goods and Product Testing Authority have made it clear that these seats contain virtually no harmful ingredients. In any case, this test did not show any components harmful to health in the child seats.
The Automobile Club advises that a child seat should be tested in a car before purchasing, and ensure that the desired type fits the car and can be securely installed in its mounting positions.
