The temperature sensor is one of the most important sensors in the car, which is used to determine the temperature of the engine or the temperature of the cooling water used in the engine and send it to the car control unit.
Through these signals, the computer performs several operations in the engine, which we will mention in this article:
- Fuel Amount Control:
When the engine starts, it is cold at this moment, the sensor sends a signal to the control unit to adjust the amount of fuel and make the mixture rich so that the fuel injection period increases, which facilitates the performance of the engine.
- EGR valve operation control
The control unit turns off the valve when the engine is starting and cold because turning it on at the start affects the speed and efficiency of the engine.
The temperature sensor has many other functions, the most important of which are:
- Controls the operation of the cooling fans
- It corrects the ignition timing
- It also controls the valve for steam emitted from the fuel
When a problem occurs in the temperature sensor, these problems occur:
- First, increase fuel consumption
As we mentioned before, this sensor gives a signal to the computer that the engine is still cold, so it works to make the mixture rich by pumping fuel. This increases the efficiency of the engine. In the event of its failure, it gives a permanent signal to the computer that the engine is cold, which leads to an increase in fuel consumption.
- Secondly, black smoke comes out of the exhaust:
As a result of giving a signal that the engine is cold, the computer pumps more fuel, which works on not burning the fuel completely, so black smoke comes out, which is unburned fuel, knowing that it is very harmful to the environment and living organisms.
- Third, the cooling fans do not work as a result of giving a permanent signal that the engine is cold, or it may run non-stop.
