The Cupra Born is a new small electric car that takes its name from an area called El Born in Barcelona, Spain, but is arguably closely related to Wolfsburg. Although it is associated with the unofficial SEAT sports brand, the Cupra Born 2022 is essentially identical to the Volkswagen ID.3 , a five-door, five-seater electric hatchback.

The Cobra has made its first electric baby the sportiest of choice. Although it takes on the same dimensions as a Volkswagen , the 2022 Cupra Born features a different front end design and a different look inside , with an upgrade in materials and technology. It will eventually be available in three different battery sizes that promise great pure electric ranges.
It’s the first pure electric SEAT Cobra sports car, but it has all the good parts of ID.3, and tops it off with sporty flair and flair.
Of course, the Cupra Born 2022 doesn’t compete against the ID.3 alone, it also stands against the Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona Electric and even some versions of the Tesla Model 3.

The question arises: Is the Cupra Born 2022 an electric car worthwhile?
Read on through this review and this comprehensive assessment to find out how good it is in terms of performance, handling, interior quality and more, as we will find out if it is better than the Volkswagen ID.3, and how it compares to its competitors in electric cars.
The performance and driving of the Cupra Born 2022
What does driving feel like, how quiet it is, engine performance, and steering precision
The Cupra Born lineup mirrors that found in the Volkswagen ID.3, offering a choice of three batteries
– 45 kWh, 58 kWh and 77 kWh, and powered by a single electric motor driving the rear wheels.
The official range starts at 211 miles on the small battery and goes up to 335 miles on the larger battery.

So far we’ve driven a mid-range car with a 58kWh battery, which has an official range of 263 miles.
It might not be quite as good as the Tesla Model 3, but it has 201 horsepower, and the Cupra Born 2022 still feels lively all the way even at highway speeds.
The Cupra Born also offers a Performance Pack option that you can add to the two larger batteries.
It bumps the power to 228 horsepower and makes it a bit faster than any ID.3.
Suspension and Driving Comfort
The Cupra Born is a comfortable electric car, reasonably absorbing bumps and bumps in the road.
It’s lower in ride height compared to the ID.3, so the Born is a bit more powerful, but the difference isn’t very noticeable.
However, don’t expect it to be quite as comfortable as a conventionally powered Seat Leon, the 2022 Cupra Born needs stiffer suspension to hold its heavy battery, so you can feel a little sloshing over the potholes, and that feeling fades a bit on the highway.
Steering in Cobra Born
Cupra Born 2022Cupra Born delivers tidy and precise handling.
It might not be thrilling on every ride, but it does well in the city, and it’s really easy to go smoothly on a B-listed road. With precise, balanced steering and decent body control, it’s definitely more attractive than the Hyundai Kona Electric or Renault ZOE.
It also has an excellent turning circle of 10.2m.
The car has had some tweaks to the steering and chassis to distinguish it from the ID.3, so it’s hard to tell the difference between them.
Noise and vibration
With minimal noise from the electric motor and gearbox, the Cupra Born 2022 runs very quietly at city speeds.
But at highway speeds, you can hear a bit of the suspension and road noise, as well as some loud wind noise.
Brake pedal feel doesn’t feel quite as smooth and consistent as on the ID.3.
The pedal takes a really long ride, your feet can feel some numbness, and it takes a while to get used to before you can come to a smooth stop.
Cupra Born 2022 interior design

Driving position and dashboard
The Cupra Born 2022 gets a digital pod behind the steering wheel, which links to a small but clear 5.3-inch screen. The screen displays speed, range and satellite navigation instructions, and houses a rotating-style gear selector on the side, just like on the BMW i3.
The position of the driver’s seat relative to the steering wheel and pedals is very good, which makes you sit comfortably at the wheel.
Height and wheel reach adjustment is standard.
You also get comfortable, well-supported sports seats made of recycled materials as standard.
The main drawback is that you have a lot of touch-sensitive controls.
Steering wheel buttons, for example, aren’t physical buttons, but touch-sensitive panels, which are frustratingly easy to operate accidentally, and infuriatingly difficult to operate when you really want to.

Also packed with temperature controls, the sliders are touch sensitive and don’t light up even at night.
Everything else is operated from the infotainment system’s central touch screen.
Using the display while driving is very annoying, and it’s much worse than the proper physical buttons and knobs, as found in many competing cars, including the Kia e-Niro, Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe.
Vision, sensors and cameras
The front is very easy to see.
The deep windshield and thin front pillars give you a largely unobstructed view of the road ahead.
The front pillars are steeply angled, though, so taller folks may find it slightly in the way at T-junctions. The rear pillars are thicker and the rear screen is a slightly shallower “rear window area,” but you can count on the parking sensors (front and rear) They are standard on all models.
Cupra Born . infotainment system

All models of the Cupra Born 2022 come with a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (larger than the 10.0-inch screen on the Volkswagen ID.3).
The screen is bright and clear, and the operating system is more easy to operate than the ID.3 car system, but the system is still a little slow.
The infotainment system on the Kia e-Niro is much easier to operate and Kia has some useful physical shortcut buttons.
Quality material in Cupra Born 2022
The basic styling is the same as that of the Volkswagen ID.3, but the Cupra Born’s interior is not just a copy-and-paste job.
It offers a slightly different blend of materials that makes it look more elegant, especially around the center console and armrests.
However, the Volkswagen ID.3 beats it out by a small margin, as there is some hard and cheap plastic in some places.
The perceived quality of the Cupra Born is much better than it was in the Nissan Leaf, but the BMW i3 looks better in every respect of course.
Passenger space and luggage compartment
front space

There’s more than enough room at the front of the Cupra Born 2022. If you’re six feet tall, or even a little more, you’ve got enough head and leg room.
Very good storage space is also provided.
There is a large compartment for storage in the center console, which has several small cups and cup holders distributed throughout.
The glove box is a decent size, and the door bins are good.
background space
The Cupra Born 2022 is roughly the same length as a Volkswagen Golf, and is as wide as the Golf in the rear.
There is room for taller passengers to sit behind anyone of the same height without feeling pressured, but not enough room for head or legroom.
The Kia Soul EV is roomier than the Cobra Born, as is the Tesla Model 3. The Nissan Leaf has more legroom, but not as much headroom, while the Renault Zoe is narrower in the rear in all respects.
With three adult passengers in the back aboard, there won’t be a lot of shoulder room, but the middle passenger will appreciate the flat floor with no central tunnel.
to stand on either side.
Cupra Born . seats

There is not a huge amount to report here.
The Cupra Born 2022 had a 60/40 split rear seat as standard, but it’s not as useful as a 40/20/40 split per seat.
There is also no sliding or tilting option for the rear seats, which you can get in an SUV for a price similar to that of the 2022 Cupra Born.
Costs and judgment
Daily costs, reliability and safety
The full price for the 2022 Cupra Born has yet to be announced, but it will likely be a bit more expensive than the Volkswagen ID.3.
This means that while the cheaper versions of the Cobra will compete with the Mazda MX-30, MG 5 and Renault Zoe, the more expensive versions will compete against the Kia e-Niro and Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus.

As with any electric vehicle, the Cupra Born 2022 will save a lot of money on petrol or diesel, saving not only on fuel costs but also on car tax.
On the other hand, the Cobra has fast charging capability of up to 100 kW (125 kW for the higher version).
That should be enough to get a mid-range charge of 58 kWh and raise the charge from 10 to 80% – and it charges in about 30 minutes, which is faster than the Nissan Leaf, Renault and Zoe.
Equipment, options and extras
The full parts package has yet to be announced, but the standard specs are expected to be at least as well-equipped as the Volkswagen ID.3.
Cupra Born . reliability
Despite officially being a brand separate from Seat, the Cupra shares many of the same components as a Volkswagen, and the reliability survey finished in 17th place (out of 30), but like the ID.3 it’s a new car we have no idea about. How reliable it is by users.
Safety and security
The Cupra Born is expected to have a wide range of safety gear as standard.
This includes Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue monitoring, and traffic sign recognition to show you the current speed limit.
The Volkswagen ID.3, which is closely related to the Bourne, scored a full five stars when tested by Euro NCAP and is a very safe car, but it fell short of a car like the Tesla Model 3 when it came to protecting the driver’s boot in a frontal collision.
Tesla has a “good” rating compared to the ID.3 which has a “marginal” rating in that region.
Cupra Born . Review Summary
The Cupra Born took all the good parts from the class-leading Volkswagen ID.3, and the Cupra Born added to itself a more refined and powerful interior, and an upgraded infotainment system.
The full price of the Cupra Born hasn’t been announced, but as long as it’s not much more expensive than the ID.3.
