A detailed review of the 2023 Ford Maverick, specifications, features, defects and prices

Although it may not look like it, the 2023 Ford Maverick is a giant pickup that has carved a niche for itself alongside the Ranger and F-150 with fresh styling and surprising utility. It comes standard with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain with front-wheel drive, but turbocharged versions are available with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive.

Payload capacity is more than enough for a weekend of home improvement supplies, and the 2023 Ford Maverick can be equipped to tow up to 4,000 pounds. Sharing its platform with the impressive Bronco Sport SUV, the Ford Maverick has four doors and a fairly spacious interior with many clever storage solutions.

The 2023 Ford Maverick has earned a spot on our list of the Top 10 Pickup Trucks and SUVs of 2023. The Maverick is constantly evolving to take on its only fierce competitor in the recently revived compact pickup segment, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The truck can haul more and more but also offers more luxury features, costs more and has a smaller cargo bed.

If you want a truck-like compact van that feels like a car and feels like a truck – congratulations! I found it! The 2023 Ford Maverick pickup is a compact truck, it has very impressive fuel economy and the interior storage it is adept at. For more information about the Ford Maverick, follow the following lines to know all the fine details before making a purchase decision.

New Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

The new Tremor Off-Road model joins Ford’s Maverick lineup for 2023. It wears a more rugged exterior and builds on the XLT or Lariat. It is only available on non-hybrid AWD models. And Ford has upgraded the transmission cooler and half-shafts so it can handle even the most demanding conditions.

Notable improvements to the Tremor package include a one-inch suspension lift, transmission cooler upgrades, and a revised all-wheel drive system with a dual-clutch rear differential. It enables the diff to be open or closed based on traction needs. It also adds lane control, which is similar to low-speed cruise control for off-road use. In addition, the Tremor package contains various design improvements.

2023 Ford Maverick Models

Ford offers the Maverick in three trims — the XL, XLT, and Lariat — with the XL being the best option for keeping the price as low as possible. It lacks the basic amenities that most buyers would consider essentials but could make a good work truck.

The XLT trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power tailgate locking, power outside mirrors, and more, making it the value-oriented model.

The quality of the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup

Yes, the 2023 Maverick is a great compact pickup truck. Comfortable and quiet to drive, it’s available with a plug-in hybrid or turbocharged four-cylinder engine. They both wrestle the truck along with urgency and return significant fuel economy. Interior space is ample for such a small truck, and it comes with an easy-to-use infotainment system and plenty of storage compartments.

The best quality items are that they are inexpensive, starting at just under $22,000, and the loading area can be 4 feet 6 inches high to carry a massive amount of cargo. But the Maverick has some drawbacks, including cheap cabin materials and relatively low towing capacity.

The exterior design of the 2023 Ford Maverick truck

The exterior and compact design of the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup truck is as attractive as it is functional. It is eye catching – it is rugged and not huge. Capable but not tight. And the 2023 Ford Maverick is built to support city life with a compact body. With a standard rearview camera and the best turning radius of any full-size or mid-size pickup.

There’s a lot to like about the 2023 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck, and the bed is versatile, with multiple exterior paint color options. Color availability varies for each trim level. After debuting last year, the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup truck is now a carryover model, so it has only minor changes. Along with new exterior paint color options,

The Tremor Off-Road model comes with styling upgrades, the optional Tremor Appearance package adds more in the form of a gray and black painted roof and mirror caps on the body side. However, these shapes are not new to Ford, as they are already available on other models. For example, you can get Atlas Blue Metallic for the midsize Explorer SUV, and the full-size F-150 pickup truck.

All 2023 Ford Maverick models come with a crew cab, which means four full-size doors and a fairly roomy back seat. And some large space under the back seat.

The dashboard of the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup

You’ll love the Maverick if you like your truck’s interior simple. There aren’t a lot of frills or buttons, but finding the controls you need is very easy. Although base models are far from exciting, they do offer standard features such as a tilt steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

More features come standard or as part of option packages on XLT and Lariat models, including dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting and power front seats. and remote keyless entry.

The quality of materials in the interior of the 2023 Ford Maverick

The interior of the 2023 Ford Maverick is decked out in plenty of hard plastic, which is to be expected given its low price. However, the practicality of the cabin and its new design keep it from looking cheap.

Most of the surfaces look solid and well integrated, and there is an interesting mix of colors and textures throughout. And every corner hides a useful storage box. It’s a great blend of form and function.

The spaciousness and spaciousness of the Ford Maverick 2023

2023 Ford Maverick

Getting in and out requires some head-hunting for most, but once you’re inside, there’s a decent amount of headroom everywhere. The front seats in the Maverick provide plenty of head and legroom, even for taller drivers and passengers. In the rear area, you will find that legroom is limited in the rear seat, as well as the space under the front seats for feet.

Vision in the 2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick’s box cab provides excellent visibility. The large, square windows mean you can see well in every direction, and while they’re a little on the small side, we love Ford’s useful integrated blind-spot mirrors.

2023 Ford Maverick seats

The Maverick is a four-door, five-seater pickup truck. The seats come with cloth upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats are standard. Faux leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel are available.

2023 Ford Maverick

The rear seats can accommodate two adults in reasonable comfort, at least for short outings, although these seats are better suited to children for commuting. The Maverick includes two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a rear center seat child restraint anchor.

The driving position and comfort of the 2023 Ford Maverick

The driving position is relatively upright, and the driver’s seat and steering wheel do not offer much adjustability. The high driving position provides good visibility to the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. The actual seat cushions are a bit small and tight, which reduces the comfort of long-distance driving.

Technology in the 2023 Ford Maverick

021 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

Without the optional Luxury package, there isn’t much technology to explore inside the Maverick. And the Spring for the Luxury package gets you adaptive cruise control, enhanced voice controls, a wireless charging pad and lane keeping assist. Many of the missing driver aids and options come standard on the lower-end Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Storage space in the 2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick’s party piece is the sheer number of compartments and internal storage areas. The doors can accommodate huge water bottles, the lower rear storage is relatively large, and there are all kinds of useful dividers in the large center console. The cabin designers have mastered the provision of many small items for storage.

020 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

Loading into a large car seat will be a bit difficult because the top tethers are located behind the fold-down rear seats. In addition, the lower storage can be accessed by lifting the entire bottom of the rear seat up, so you will have to remove any child seats to fall under it.

Infotainment and connectivity system in the 2023 Ford Maverick

011 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick 1

The Maverick infotainment system featuring an 8.0-inch touchscreen is standard on all Maverick models. Phone system integration is standard, and even the base model comes with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. Available options include SiriusXM satellite radio, an upgraded B&O Play stereo system, and wireless smartphone charging capability.

The cargo box of the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup

The Maverick features a 4-foot-6-inch cargo bed with a payload capacity of 1,500 pounds. It’s a pretty small cargo box, even by compact pickup standards, but it’s cleverly designed with multiple tie-down cleats, storage compartments, and provided power outlets.

And the sides of the bed box have slots for two-by-four flaps, which can help divide the cargo area and prevent loose items from rolling away. The tailgate can also be locked in the midway position, as well as the fully open or closed positions. This makes it easier to support taller items such as lumber or plywood during transport.

2023 Ford Maverick engine

The 2023 Ford Maverick is available with two powertrain options: a hybrid powertrain or an EcoBoost powertrain. The hybrid package includes a four-cylinder engine, an electric motor and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). By comparison, the Maverick EcoBoost is powered by a 250-horsepower four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

06 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

Front-wheel drive is standard on both configurations. All-wheel drive is optional, but only available with the EcoBoost model. It has a little more power to give at full throttle, but other than that, it’s just as collectible and peppy as a hybrid system in everyday driving. The eight-speed transmission is smooth and decisive.

Driving impressions of the 2023 Ford Maverick pickup

It may look weak on paper, but the Maverick Hybrid delivers plenty of power in the real world . The hybrid system moves the truck off the line and around town with a gusto and provides ample vigor when sprinting to highway speeds and overtaking other vehicles.

Ford maverick speed 2023

The Maverick’s dash from zero to 60 mph takes about 7.5 seconds. The hybrid powertrain is less cumbersome, taking 7.7 seconds to reach 60 mph in our test, but it gets the job done nonetheless. To deliver its impressive payload capacity, we piloted the optional 2.0-liter turbocharged Maverick engine. And our test truck went from zero to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. In other trials, the speed reached 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

That’s faster than any mid-size pickup truck and faster than the Hyundai Santa Cruz. In turn, the automatic transmission shifts quickly when you accelerate, and doesn’t hunt for gears on long, uphill inclines thanks to abundant power coming from under the hood. All in all, the CVT runs smoothly and quickly, though it sometimes causes the engine to fly during hard acceleration.

Steering in the 2023 Ford Maverick

2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick’s steering and handling are unsatisfying. It feels like a traditional truck. Yes, the steering wheel is satisfying in your hands, but any sense of the road underneath is vague, and there’s an appreciable amount of body roll when turning. So the bumps in the middle corner will bother you a bit when dealing with it.

Ford Maverick 2023 off road

07 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick 1

Off-roading isn’t quite as aggressive, which is what we tested, but there’s 8.3 inches of ground clearance and all-wheel drive. Plus, you can get the optional FX4 package if you want to go off the beaten path.

Ride comfort in the 2023 Ford Maverick

When it comes to comfort, the Maverick embraces more of a truck’s ambience than its rival, the Hyundai Santa Cruz. On broken or bumpy roads, it has a choppy ride quality that never seems to go away. The seats are firmly padded yet supportive, and they stand up to long trips. But there are hard plastic door panels next to your knees, and it’s uncomfortable to brace for when navigating winding roads.

Noise in the 2023 Ford Maverick

016 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

There isn’t much noise from the engine on the highway, but it’s a bit unrefined at idle and under full throttle acceleration. We also noticed an amazingly loud drivetrain noise coming from under the rear floor that we couldn’t pin down. The cab filters out most road and wind noise, but there is a fair amount of engine noise.

Handling and stability in the 2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick is a unibody pickup, and it has more in common with Ford Escape SUV than it does with Ford Ranger parts. The end result is a truck that’s more comfortable to drive than a regular pickup, though not as off-road capable.

The Maverick has the stability and grip when navigating through turns, and shows minimal side-to-side body movements. It is easy to maneuver and park in tight spots. While the brakes provide solid stopping power, although on hybrid models the brake pedal is somewhat sensitive, making smooth stops a moving target.

Suspension in the 2023 Ford Maverick

The bad news is that the suspension is stiff, and occupants are liable to feel shudders and vibrations when driving on bumpy roads. But the ride is still comfortable. And the Maverick’s stiff suspension means that the Maverick is somewhat difficult to ride over broken asphalt.

Towing capacity in the 2023 Maverick

The Maverick’s maximum towing and payload capabilities are impressive for such a small car: 4,000 and 1,500 pounds, respectively. The Maverick offers a four-pin and seven-pin connector and an integrated trailer brake controller, a feature missing from the competing Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz has a higher total towing capacity.

2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick can tow up to 4,000 pounds when equipped with the 4K Towing Package, which is available on EcoBoost AWD models. And all other configurations are rated to tow up to 2,000 lbs. Which means it’s enough for most light jobs.

Fuel efficiency in Ford Maverick 2023

The Maverick Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. This is the best fuel economy of any non-electric pickup truck, and by far, it’s better than a few compact cars.

023 Ford Maverick 2023 Ford Maverick

The front-wheel-drive EcoBoost, on the other hand, returns 23/30 mpg city/highway. while the all-wheel-drive EcoBoost gets 22/29 mpg. Although it’s nowhere near as good as the hybrid model, these ratings still top competitors like the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Toyota Tacoma, and Honda Ridgeline.

Safety and driver assistance features of the 2023 Ford Maverick

The Maverick offers many driver-assistance features, but many of its most sought-after items will require an option package or fork out for a more expensive trim. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automatic emergency braking system
  • Lane departure warning is available with lane keep assist
  • Adaptive cruise control is available

Value for money 2023 Ford Maverick

The lower model needs more oomph. With the EPA’s estimate of 37 mpg with the hybrid engine, the starting price will be just under $22,000, which is both pretty impressive. Our test car, on the other hand, costs close to $32,000, and was lacking in a plethora of options. There were no driver aids and some of the other amenities that are standard on other trucks. While the optional Luxury package adds many of those desirable features, we think it’s well worth the money.

Crash tests of the 2023 Ford Maverick

The current Maverick hasn’t been extensively reviewed for safety, but the previous generation was awarded four out of five stars last year. Completely incomprehensible was the IIHS, who gave the truck only a few ratings for its collision-prevention systems.

Vehicle-to-vehicle testing yielded only good results. On the other hand, the upside to building a unibody is that crash zones will be built in, so future safety reviews of the Maverick are expected to be strong.

Ford Maverick 2023 reliability

The 2023 Maverick has an expected reliability score of 81 out of 100. JD Power’s predicted reliability score of 91-100 is best, 81-90 great, 70-80 mediocre, and 0-69 is fair and considered below average.

Ford Maverick Warranty 2023

The 2023 Maverick has a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Additionally, Ford covers hybrid-related Maverick components with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty. This is pretty typical among trucks, but that’s what you get with the Maverick. But the Santa Cruz tops it off with a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Positives

  • Low starting price for basic versions
  • Plenty of equipment available to enhance towing, off-roading and safety
  • The standard hybrid powertrain returns excellent fuel economy
  • Quick acceleration from the optional turbocharged engine

cons

  • Rugged ride quality
  • Some features are hidden in costly optional packages
  • The interior has a low character..with low quality materials
