First test drive of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Unconventional new luxury

The Mercedes-Benz EQS blends luxury and performance, and the new electric drive is a distinctive experience.

Viewing the Mercedes-Benz EQS takes us to the S-brand, and when the S badge is seen on the back of a Mercedes-Benz, we are prepared for certain expectations, both in terms of quality and luxury. In AMG models such as the C63 S, this means higher performance and more aggressive design, and in Benz cars such as the S580 and GLS, it means unparalleled luxury. So does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS live up to the nineteenth letter of the English alphabet? This is what we want to find out.

The pioneering electric car is available in two categories, the first is the EQS 450+, which works with a rear-wheel drive system, and the second is the EQS 580 4Matic with all-wheel drive. The car comes in a completely new design, and has a 107.8 kWh battery hidden in the floor, and gives both the 450 and 580 a range of 780 kilometers (485 miles), according to the WLTP rating, but the EPA’s range is 400 miles or so, and by the way, Confused by the plus sign in the 450 name? It represents an extended range battery, which is an add-on for 90 kWh models and is intended for specific markets.

And the Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz EQS, uses electric motors, such as the Smart Electric Drive and B-Class EV, in addition to the EQC crossover engine used in non-American versions, and they are all highly efficient, and if they were not, they would not have carried that three-headed star. Not to mention calling the luxury S-Class in the form of an electric EV.

Our electric car is marked by positive first impressions, as the
Mercedes-Benz EQS is not an attractive traditional car.
It goes beyond that, which is underlined by the curved roofline design and short scalloped cap, which Mercedes says it designed this way to emphasize the difference between electric cars and internal combustion cars, but my first impressions of it were that the wheel-to-axle ratio was somewhat long. You waste a lot of space.

However, its beauty fills the eye of the beholder, and this eye finds the Mercedes-Benz EQS very attractive thanks to its simple shape and elegant details.
At the front, the fake grille, decorated with dozens of tiny star shapes, lights up at night and appears like real stars surrounding the central badge at the front, while the backlighting elements summon wrap-around LEDs (a smart nod to the first year of electricity).
Aside from the shape, the new design contributes to a better drag coefficient of 0.20, which helps the EQS glide through the air with minimal drag, and the German manufacturer’s sedan is deceptively large, giving it a regal feel befitting a flagship version.

Inside, the EQS is a beacon of luxury, and the dashboard is a curved glass pane, resembling a panoramic screen, which Mercedes called the Hyperscreen, and below it includes three individual optional screens, and in front of the driver is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 17.7-inch OLED screen that acts as an information system next to its role Basic entertainment.
The screen works with a system known as the MBUX program, which is a new technology for managing the central screen, displaying audio controls and suggested applications on the screen, whether displaying maps in full screen or any other entertainment work.

And the third piece of the panoramic screen Hyperscreen is a touch screen, which is intended for the passenger with a size of 12.3 inches and also works with the MBUX system, and away from the screens we go to the seats, where it is possible to adjust the seat and climate settings, and listen to music via Bluetooth headphones or via the car.

The best thing about the new Mercedes is that it learns. Over time, the system learns your routine, suggests routes or phone calls based on your established schedule, and maybe even places recommended boxes on the aforementioned screen—technical magic that pixel and computer junkies will love—and they’ll have a hard time getting used to. On the MBUX too, thanks to the climate control panel, touch screen interface and of course not complicated but relatively simple, dedicated to audio and comfort features.
But even regardless of the number of screens, the EQS is an exceptional luxury car.

In fact, I knew the Mercedes-Benz EQS EQS had an impressive interior, and I tried to get rid of my fascination with it beforehand, but it groaned amidst the fine-grained leather seats, premium plastics, and a few attractive pieces of wood and metal laid out with great care.

There’s plenty of space for up to five passengers, and I really feel the space, plus the sedan’s comfort feel, and airy quality, it truly deserves the S-Class moniker. The feeling of spaciousness gives comfort in all seating positions in all four passenger seats.
There’s plenty of room for stowage as well, both in the trunk and another storage unit under the console that provides good storage space.

Trunk space is 22 cubic feet, when compared to the Tesla Model S, which boasts up to 31.6 cubic feet split between a 26.3-cube cargo container and a 5.3-cubic cubbyhole.
But when you fold the rear seats of the EQS you’ll find 63 units of luggage space.

All in all, the interior of the Mercedes-Benz EQS deserves to be associated with the S-Class, as it has an impressive interior, including soft leather, premium plastic materials and a few attractive pieces in wood and metal.
Placed in separate places very neatly, the driver and passengers are surrounded by panoramic lighting, consisting of 260 LED lights distributed throughout the cabin, creating a wonderful atmosphere inside. The interior door handles are an anomaly and seem a single masterpiece;
In short, the well-designed Mercedes-Benz EQS looks a lot more than the cheap Tesla Model S, Mercedes offers more space than a richly-appointed Porsche Taycan, and in all my travels and cabin tests I got the feeling that Mercedes wanted its fans to feel at home in a Mercedes-Benz The convenient and cool EQS.
Power and range in the Mercedes-Benz EQS

The spacious and comfortable cabin of the large
Mercedes EV informs the rest of the driving experience .
Our first round was in the base EQS 450 class, which produces 329 horsepower and 416 pound-feet, powered by a single rear engine, with impressive performance that allows the sedan to sprint to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.
Performance feels even faster, a testament to the instant torque response of any electric motor, and the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 had no trouble keeping up with highway traffic, easily maintaining a drama-free 80mph.

Whether on the highway or in the city,
the Mercedes-Benz EQS is a refined vehicle.
While the silent thrust of some electric cars can actually highlight other sensory interventions , the EQS is quiet and smooth, whether on potholed city streets or on motorways, wind and tire noise are well controlled, and I didn’t really feel the brakes though Powered by four-corner air suspension, this 450 features a Nappa leather interior in an unusual blend of Neva Gray and Biscaya Blue, and the optional multifunction front seats, the most beautiful of which are massage ones, really let the miles slip under my feet without complaint or Back pain at all.
Whether on the highway or in the city, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is a polished vehicle.
Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450 revealed some bad habits. Once I got out of the lane, Mercedes would allow the driver to set the amount of brake regeneration, but I found it difficult due to the car’s system interference sometimes as I noticed that the brake pedal moved alone down during its movement and was not in the same where you left it.
But after shutting down the car and restoring the power that was completely disconnected, I found the brakes to work smoothly even on a winding road.

That Mercedes-Benz EQS is a big, heavy sedan isn’t particularly nimble, weighing in at 5,597 pounds, but I found some vague steering that the co-driver might have sometimes interfered with.
On the one hand, I wasn’t comfortable with the handling and transmission, perhaps this is because our sedan has standard rear axle steering of 10 degrees to aid in parking and city driving.
long legs

When I got into the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic, some of these dynamic fears were allayed.
It’s all-wheel drive, and each wheel has its own motor, and the engines put out a whopping 516 horsepower and 631 pound-feet, allowing for a 0-60 acceleration time of 4.1 seconds, which is amazing for a Mercedes this big.
The EQS 580 version is heavier than its sibling, weighing 5,888 pounds, but it felt like it was better equipped for fast cornering.
Altogether, both versions of the EQS excel in navigating missions, on long-distance big touring, and also allowing us to test the outstanding driver assistance technology of the Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan.
Really nice technology, the EQS features an optional augmented reality display on the glass, which illuminates the lane lines and drives the car to help the driver maintain a safe tracking distance between him and the cars in front of him, and the tracking technology works appropriately in curves.
The high-speed adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology and lane-keeping technology also helps excellently, and after testing it from all angles, the driver assistance system works smoothly to reduce driver fatigue.

After settling into a long drive on the highway, we turned our attention to estimating the Mercedes-Benz EQS battery range.
Whereas, WLTP ratings tend to be somewhat optimistic and we haven’t fully exhausted the 107.8 kWh battery pack in either car, but our calculations based on the rear based on two days of driving suggest that the EQS does indeed hit the lofty set of goals that It was built for and a range of 780 km has already been achieved.
We started our first 450 class, and by our measurements it had 442 miles and the battery was nearly full.
Then I loaded up and drove down an uphill highway, and it was a zigzag double carriageway, 96 km, and measurements estimated there was 311 miles left.
On the other hand, our experience with the EQS 580 was similarly impressive, and it indicated that the battery was three-quarters charged, which means we had about 342 miles to go, of course I didn’t reach that distance and it smashed after 109 miles, but the battery only dropped in half.

As such, we think the EQS will easily outperform the EPA’s 402-mile range and the Tesla Model S, and may even outperform the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which has an unofficial 500-mile range to remain the current champion of electric EVs.
And the owner of the largest range, and Mercedes has carried out a smart process to determine the rate of battery consumption according to the surrounding traffic and the road we are traveling on. .
I tested the charging system and found that a 200 kW DC fast charger could charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes, and when I was in a hurry, I did 180 miles of range and the process took only 15 minutes, and of course if you’re thinking of using a wall box at home you won’t Mercedes offers it, meaning it’s not basic, but you can buy an AC charger with a power of 9.6 kW, and it can fully renew the battery in 11 hours and 15 minutes.
Pricing
Another test of the Mercedes EQS’s popularity with consumers is its price, but unfortunately we don’t have anything to announce on that front (which is also why we haven’t assigned a rating to any of the EQS models we drove).
But Mercedes-EQ representatives wink that it likely reflects the pricing structure of other Model S equivalents, so we think the EQS 450 will start at $110,000, and go up to $120,000 for the top-tier EQS 580 4Matic.
Compared to the $84,990 long-range Tesla Model S and the $129,990 Plaid Model S, they both offer better performance but lower interior quality. The difference doesn’t seem like much, but the Mercedes interior is much bigger.
Bosch is close to Mercedes in terms of price, and in contrast there is the Lucid Air, which starts at $131,500 for the standard Grand Touring sedan.
With a similar form factor and an unofficial range estimate of 500 miles, the Grand Touring from Lucid is likely to be Mercedes’ biggest competitor and the closest to the pockets of forward-thinking luxury car buyers.
The Mercedes EQS has all the DNA that the last letter in its name suggests.
However, the EQS builds on the manufacturer’s decades of experience building luxury sedans, and gets the touches and performance that make them shine on every ride.
It does the job of the long haul, thanks to its easy powertrain and exceptionally comfortable cabin.
EQS is also packed with easy-to-use technologies.
Practical in every sense of the word, with plenty of room for passengers.
The list of approvals can be long and drawn out, with flaws few and far between.
It may sound futuristic, but beneath that skin, the Mercedes EQS has all the DNA the last letter in its EQS name could suggest.

$102,310How Much Does the Mercedes-Benz EQS Cost? Starting at $102,310, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS has the highest base price among luxury electric cars. That’s for the base trim of the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive EQS 450; two higher trims with that powertrain setup increase in cost by a few thousand dollars
