Automakers have been rushing to fill their lineups with SUVs, and the small SUV segment has grown as a result. So perhaps it’s no surprise that all 10 models on our list of cheap SUVs are subcompacts. They are requested according to the basic price, from the least to the most expensive, and all prices include destination fees for SUVs, and the word “SUV” was added next to each car to identify it as a four-wheel drive.
But not any cash incentives may be available. Prices and combined EPA fuel economy estimates are for front-wheel drive versions of all SUVs except the Kia Seltos, which comes with all-wheel drive in the base LX trim level. All prices also include an automatic transmission.
Affordable subcompacts like the Nissan Kicks and Hyundai Venue look like other small SUVs and are marketed as such, but they don’t offer all-wheel drive, which was a must-have feature needed to make our list. Adding all-wheel drive to most SUVs below costs about $1,500, but it’s an extra $4,600 for a Trailblazer because AWD isn’t available in the base trim level.

The all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer compact SUV is the cheapest new SUV you can buy today — and by a large margin. The base trim level L is powered by a 137-horsepower, 1.2-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Despite its relatively low price, the Trailblazer comes standard with useful tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity and important active safety features like automatic emergency braking and lane assist.
2021 Ford EcoSport S “SUV”

Fuel Economy: 28 mpg
Front-wheel drive versions of Ford’s smallest SUV are powered by a 123-horsepower, 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine with a six-speed automatic. The base S has a Wi-Fi hotspot with a data experience for on-the-go calling,
But it lacks the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and it doesn’t include many active security features. The EcoSport’s comfortable rear seat isn’t unusual in this class, but its rugged ride, lack of engine and old-school rear swing gate are a downside in this increasingly competitive segment.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport dates back to 2011, was one of the first compact SUVs and is still one of the most affordable. Mitsubishi has updated the Outlander Sport over the years, but the SUV’s vintage interior shows its age. The Outlander Sport’s steering is dope and ride quality can be choppy, too.
The SUV has its strengths, like good visibility and highway stability, but as we noted in our review, “it has some big issues holding it back in the competitive small SUV segment.” For 2021, Mitsubishi is adding important safety features such as automatic high beams, lane departure warning and forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, to all trims on the Outlander Sport.
2021 Honda HR-V LX – “SUV” class

In a category where most models short passengers — especially those in the back seat — the Honda HR-V is refreshingly different. The HR-V has a comfortable and spacious interior, and it has amazing versatility thanks to the magic multi-position seat in the second row.
All HR-Vs are powered by a 141-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The combo offers a good estimated gas mileage of 30 mpg combined with the front-wheel drive, but the power is generally modest. The HR-V offers important safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning, but they are not available on the base LX.
2021 Chevrolet Trax LS Class “SUV”

In addition to the newer Trailblazer, Chevrolet also sells a compact Trax SUV. The Trax is slightly smaller than the Trailblazer, and it doesn’t have much storage space. Power comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rather than a three-cylinder turbo like the Trailblazer, and the Trax engine works with a conventional automatic transmission. Although the Trax costs a lot more than the Trailblazer, it comes with fewer active safety features that are limited to the higher-end models.
2021 Kia Seltos LX Class “SUV”

The all-new Kia Seltos is the only SUV on this list that makes all-wheel drive standard at the base; The top-of-the-line S model has standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. The Seltos LX is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 146 horsepower that works with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Standard features on the SUV include 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth audio streaming and cruise control. However, active safety features such as automatic emergency braking and blind spot warning are only available in higher trim levels.

2021 Jeep Renegade Sport “SUV”
