The Chinese Haval H6 has become a serious player in the popular mid-range SUV market, and is a cheaper competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. With iconic brands setting prices and cars still in short supply, car buyers are turning to emerging brands like GWM in droves . It recently launched the Haval H6 Lux, which is a well-equipped SUV, and costs $35,990.

The number of models has shrunk, there are now Jolion and H6 badges to choose between, and the Chinese manufacturer has added new models to maintain the line. These new options include hybrids. There is also a new flagship entering the Haval H6 models, the GT model, which is a good-looking SUV that we will be testing shortly, but we have reserved the moment for the H6.
The exterior design of Haval 2022 H6 Lux
Starting with the exterior of the 2022 Haval H6, the front features a grille with chrome surround and LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lights. The sides feature black wheel rims, body-colour adjustable side mirrors, mirrors with turn signals, body-colour door handles, and 19-inch wheels with 225/55 tires.



The rear of the 2022 Haval H6 features LED taillights, rear fog lights, tailgate cargo access, a spoiler, and an exhaust system. As for the exterior colors, the color palette includes Mars Red, Carney Blue, Hamilton White and Crystal Black. For starters, the Haval H6 Lux has a modern interior. The Chinese have been good at imitating things, and Haval is no exception, with very good dual digital screens. Also, the spacious cabin provides an uncompressed feel even when carrying a large number of people. And manufacturers moved away from the traditional T-shift transmission in favor of rotating dials. This is something you will need to get used to.



The only thing that bothered me a bit was that the electric parking brake and auto stop didn’t have lights like most other brands. This is probably a result of the semiconductor shortage right now, but I expect that to be upgraded soon.

The 2022 Haval H6’s interior is incredibly clean and uncluttered, and with just seven switches on the entire central portion of the dashboard, the Tesla similarities continue. In fact, one or two functions – such as the seat heaters – are buried so deeply in the digital menus that we’d just prefer a few extra buttons even if they only partially spoil the minimalist design.

Since our test car was a mid-range Lux, in addition to the heated seats, we were treated to power seat adjustment for the driver, leather steering wheel, keyless entry, metallic paint, 18-inch alloy wheels, and both phone systems.

The cabin of the 2022 Haval H6 Lux is a fun and practical place to spend time. The 2022 Haval H6 Lux’s front seats feel plush and supportive, but they lack tilt adjustment, and despite the ergonomic refinement allowed the seat to suffer some strange cramping and ache, even during relatively short trips. Road surfaces with lots of small imperfections also seem to make the suspension – so the passengers – a little uneasy.

Space in the second row is huge for a midsize SUV. The faux leather seats have a quality feel (am I sure they aren’t leather?), are comfortable, and the driver gets power adjustment including lumbar support adjustment. The seats don’t offer much thigh support, but on the plus side, the driving position is high and this is a fairly easy car to keep an eye on.

The 2022 Haval H6 Lux is wider than most competitors, but it’s much longer. This provides the roominess other brands lack. It is a very comfortable four-person, five-person car. The technology and infotainment features of the 2022 Haval H6 Lux include a 10.3-inch touchscreen display that accurately displays data through to an impressive array of technologies and applications. And a 10.25-inch instrument cluster that displays the driver’s instrument cluster is speed and digital and includes a tachometer and even a real-time vehicle/lane position feature very similar to a Tesla innovation.

The touch screen system is comprehensive but the first time user can experience some complexity. And there’s no built-in navigation system inside the infotainment software, so you’ll need your phone. The cabin supports Apple PlayCar and Android Auto, wireless charging, AM/FM radio, USB and AUX ports, and a 6-speaker sound system. IMHO the system using Google Maps is much better than any manufacturer provided navigation because Google Maps is always up to date.
Technology in the 2022 Haval H6 Lux
That’s it before you get the impressive and comprehensive suite of safety and driver assistance. All H6s get Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver Fatigue Monitoring, Speed Sign Recognition, Reversing Camera, and Rear Parking Radar.

The list continues in the Lux class with a full 360-degree camera system and adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assistance. Wait until we get to the price. This highly-equipped mid-spec variant is only $33,990, the range-topping H6 Ultra model is $36,990 and all-wheel drive costs another $2,000.
Storage space in Haval 2022 H6 Lux
In terms of storage, there are cup holders, storage areas in the doors and in the center console, and glove box space is plentiful – so much so that you might lose your gear until you look for it.

Its 600-liter trunk can expand to 1,485 liters with the rear seats folded, although the reserve is a space-saver hidden under the adjustable trunk floor. And if you’re carrying a stroller or doing your own thing, you certainly won’t be asking for more space.

Sharing the majority of the 2022 Haval H6 product line is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine pumping out 150 kW and 320 Nm of torque, bolted to a standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A large part of the lineup is front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is an option in the H6 Ultra line.

For such an affordable machine, Haval’s in-house developed engine is surprisingly refined and brings the 2022 Haval H6 Lux just the right dose of performance. He’s off the mark for strong acceleration and would be happy to hit the red line. Torque production and spread are also the most beneficial characteristic of a turbo donk.
Haval powertrain performance
The 2022 Haval H6’s engine isn’t lacking in punch, and the Hankook Ventus 225/60 front tires sometimes crunch, with a wide torque band and road-acceptable levels of refinement, and we managed a dash from 0-100 km/h in just over 8.0 seconds. All in all, the in-house GWM dual-clutch transmission worked very well with smooth shifting. With a listed towing capacity of 2,000 kg.

The best way to drive a turbo and DCT kit like this is to be progressive rather than aggressive with your revving inputs, to negate front wheel spin, engine lag and transmission lag. Our highway fuel economy test yielded 7.1 l/100km, while the more mixed track finished at 8.5 l/100km.
The DCT’s coupling to the engine is a very respectable match, with the typical urgency and quick gears associated with the gearbox. But the same cannot be said for the traction control map, which allows more wheels to slip during even the toughest acceleration. The H6 supports Haval’s new global platform, which sheds some weight compared to the previous model as well as increases rigidity and crash safety.
Driving impressions of Haval 2022 H6
I was very impressed with the 2022 Haval H6 road trip. It’s no worse than the other competitors, and it’s arguably one of the best midsize SUVs on the market. There’s plenty of alertness and power in its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

And you can definitely make the front wheels tweet if you pedal too much which isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps the best way to drive a turbo and a DCT kit like this is to be progressive rather than aggressive with its revving inputs, to negate front wheel spin, engine lag and transmission lag.
Haval 2022 H6 Suspension
The 2022 Haval H6 is fast, smooth, and arguably the most comfortable SUV I’ve driven. The suspension absorbs most of the bumps in the road around the suburbs, and you won’t notice uneven road surfaces either. As dynamically as it isn’t great, its suspension is very soft and supple,
The handling and stability of Haval 2022 H6 Lux

Overall, the in-house GWM dual-clutch transmission worked very well with smooth shifting. But I found there was some roll in the corners and turns, little steering feedback, and suspension that wasn’t thrilling when hitting small, sharp bumps in the road. It was affected and could do better in controlling how the car bounces out of the undulations.
Steering in the 2022 Haval H6
The steering is direct with sharp cornering but has a strange pseudo-feel, and while the body control is generally made for normal driving, the H6 rolls on its shoulder with little provocation and highlights its lack of rolling stiffness.

Adaptive cruise control is also designed to slow the car in turns, but it’s also very responsive. I’d just beat him with the metronome.
Ride comfort in the 2022 Haval H6

For a more discreet drive, the H6 performs better. On well-maintained roads with a few large inclines and bumps, the ride levels and basic comfort are good, the cabin is well insulated from sound and the lane keeping technology, again, is very reminiscent of a Tesla with the system willing to take control of steering duties for a wide variety. The mid-size SUV delivers strong results in all categories, doing particularly well for protecting adult occupants (90% and children (88%), and pedestrians and cyclists (road risk) 73%). It earned full points for protection of the driver in both the side crash and tilting pillar tests, as well as protection for front and rear occupants from injury and for the front seat passenger in the frontal rollover test.
Haval 2022 H6 maintenance and warranty costs
All Haval models are backed by a seven-year/unlimited kilometer warranty with five years/100,000km roadside assistance. Service intervals are every 12 months or 15,000 km, except for the first year with a 10,000 km cap. A maximum-priced service plan is also in place, costing $1,560 for the first five years/70,000 km.

There are a slew of driver-assist features including adaptive cruise control that works well, lane assist that steers you between lane lines as long as the corner isn’t too tight, and blind-spot warning lights in the mirrors.

You can also see a live animation of the lane-keeping system in the instrument cluster, which shows you a representation of what cameras and radars see. One gripe is the emergency Lane Keep function that’s so sensitive it chimes with you even if you’re not pulling away from the lines. When it is turned off (through various screen menus), it turns on again on reboot.

The GWM Haval H6 has earned a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating against the latest 2020-22 protocols. It scored 90% for adult protection, 88% for child protection, 73% for pedestrian/cyclist protection, and 81% for safety assistance features.
