The Chinese Haval H6 has become a serious player in the popular mid-size SUV market, and is a cheaper competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5. With popular brands setting prices and cars still being poorly supplied in the market, car buyers are turning to emerging brands like GWM in droves . The Haval H6 Lux is a well-appointed SUV that costs $35,990.

The number of models has shrunk, there are Jolion and H6 badges to choose from, and the Chinese manufacturer has added new models to keep the line up. These new options include hybrids. There’s also a new flagship coming into the Haval H6 models, the GT, which is a good-looking SUV that we’ll be testing soon, but we’re now dedicated to the H6.

The only thing that bothered me a bit was that the electric parking brake and the auto-off weren’t as lit as most other brands. This is probably a result of the lack of semiconductors at the moment, but I expect that to be upgraded soon.

And since our test car was a Lux mid-ranger, with heated seats, we factored in the driver’s electric seat adjustment, leather steering wheel, keyless entry feature, metallic paintwork, 18-inch alloy wheels, and both phone systems.

The cabin of the 2022 Haval H6 Lux is a fun and functional place to spend time. The front seats of the 2022 Haval H6 Lux feel plush and supportive, but they lack tilt adjustment, and despite the comfortable polishing allowed the seat to suffer from some strange cramping and soreness, even during relatively short trips. The road surfaces with a lot of minor flaws also seem to make the suspension — and thus the passengers — a little restless.

The space in the second row is huge for a mid-size SUV. The faux-leather seats have a quality feel (am I sure it’s not leather?), are comfortable, and the driver gets electrical adjustment including lumbar support adjustment. The seats don’t provide much support for the thighs, but on the plus side, the driving position is elevated and this is a fairly easy car to keep an eye on.

The 2022 Haval H6 Lux is wider than most competitors, but much longer. This provides the roominess that other brands lack. This is a very comfortable car that seats four and seats five. The LUX version doesn’t have a power tailgate, which I missed when loading and unloading my golf clubs, but they sparkle well without having to lower the rear seats. However, the luggage space is huge with over 1,450 liters of space.

The touch screen system is comprehensive but the user can struggle with some complexity the first times. There’s no navigation built into the infotainment, so you’ll need your phone, and the cabin supports Apple Play Car and Android Auto, wireless charging, AM/FM radio, USB and AUX ports, and a 6-speaker audio system. IMHO using Google Maps is much better than any navigation provided by the manufacturer because Google Maps is always up to date.

Technology in the 2022 HAVAL H6 Lux

That’s it before you get the cool and comprehensive Safety and Driver Assistance package. All H6 cars receive automatic emergency braking in conjunction with pedestrian and cyclist detection, along with lane-keeping assist, in addition to blind spot monitoring, driver fatigue monitoring, speed sign recognition, reversing camera and rear parking radar.

The list continues in the Lux class with a full 360-degree camera system and traffic jam-assisted adaptive cruise control. Wait until we get to the price. This highly-equipped mid-spec variant costs just $33,990, the range-topping H6 Ultra costs $36,990 and all-wheel drive costs another $2,000.

In terms of storage, there are cup holders, storage areas in the doors, the center console, and plenty of glove box space – so much so that you might lose your gear until you look for it.

Its 600-liter boot can fit 1,485 liters with the rear seats folded, although the reserve is a space saver hidden under the adjustable boot floor. And if you’re carrying a stroller or doing the do-it-yourself thing, you certainly won’t ask for more space.

For such an affordable machine, Haval’s in-house developed engine is surprisingly refined and imparts a decent dose of performance to the 2022 Haval H6 Lux. Off the strong acceleration mark and he’ll be happy to hit the red line. The torque production and spread are also the most useful feature of the turbo donk.

The DCT’s coupling to the engine is a very respectable match, with the typical urgency and fast gears associated with the gearbox. But the same can’t be said of the traction control map, which allows plenty of wheels to slip during the most difficult accelerations, and the H6 supports the new Haval’s global platform, which sheds some weight compared to the outgoing model as well as increases rigidity and crash safety.

Driving impressions of the 2022 HAVAL H6

I was very impressed with the 2022 Haval H6 on the road. It is no worse than other competitors and is arguably one of the best mid-size SUVs on the market. And there’s plenty of vigilance and power in its 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

Overall, the inboard GWM dual-clutch transmission worked very well with smooth shifting. But I did find that there was some rolling in corners and turns, while there was little feedback on the steering, and the suspension system was not very exciting when hit by small, sharp bumps. They were affected and could do better at controlling how the car bounces off the ripples.

The steering is direct with sharp cornering but has a weird pseudo-feel, and while the body control is generally made up for normal driving, the H6 rolls over its shoulder with little provocation and highlights the lack of rolling stiffness.

Adaptive cruise control is also designed to slow the car in turn, but is also very responsive. I would just overtake it with the metronome.

Riding comfort in the Haval 2022 H6

For more discreet driving, the H6 performs better. On well-maintained roads with a few big slopes and bumps, ride levels and basic comfort are good, the cabin is well insulated from sound and the lane-keeping technology is, again, very reminiscent of a Tesla with the system ready to take control of steering duties for a particularly diverse group. Amazing roads and driving styles.

The mid-size SUV delivers strong results in all categories, and does particularly well protecting adult occupants (90% and children (88%), pedestrians and cyclists (roads at risk) 73%). HAVAL has declared an ANCAP five-star safety rating. Granted to its Haval H6 SUV earlier this year extends to the plug-in hybrid and GT variants.

The H6’s well-functioning onboard safety systems also helped 81% avoid or reduce the effects of a range of potential collisions – including in the off-road, in-vehicle and vehicle-to-cyclist Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) scenarios.

For the AEB Back Pedestrian Test, which simulates a pedestrian walking or standing behind a vehicle in reverse, I got two points. While it scored full points for protecting the driver in both the side impact and the tilt tests, as well as for protecting the front and rear seat occupants from injury and for the front seat passenger in the front rollover test.

You can also watch a live animation of the lane-keeping system in the instrument cluster, which shows you a representation of what the cameras and radars see. One gripe is the very sensitive Keep Lane Keep emergency function, and it chimes with you even if you’re not straying from the lines. When it’s off (through several screen menus), it turns on again on restart.

Safety and security features in the 2022 Haval H6 Lux

GWM Haval H6 has received a maximum ANCAP security rating of five stars against the latest 2020-22 protocols. It scored 90% for adult protection, 88% for child protection, 73% for pedestrian/cyclist protection, and 81% for safety assist features.
