With a smaller battery and a larger range.. the Dutch Lightyear One offers a Solar EV with a range of more than 440 miles

440 miles is a big deal, but the bigger deal is that Lightyear One made a relatively small battery pack.

We have followed Lightyear’s activities closely since their efforts first caught our eye . The Dutch startup has been bringing us a lightyear solar-powered electric car with its signature Lightyear One near the finish line, and it recently hit a milestone. Last month, at the Aldenhoven Test Center in Germany, the Lightyear One drove 441 miles on a single charge.

Some may ask, “So what?” We have electric cars with great range like both Lucid and Tesla that offer electric cars with high range but of course they are high dollar, yes they can break the 400 mile mark on a charge. That’s right, but the Lightyear One achieved what Tesla and Lucid were able to do but with a much smaller battery. While Lucid’s Air-spec-top-spec has a 110 kWh battery pack on board, Tesla’s Plaid model also uses 100 kWh, and you know the difference is that the Lightyear has a 60 kWh battery pack / hour only.

This means the company has found a way to offer a similar range to the Tesla and Lucid, but with a battery that’s 40 percent smaller than its competitors, and even a claimed efficiency of 7.35 miles per kilowatt-hour. 
And if we compare that to a relatively efficient Tesla Model 3 with a 50 kWh battery, which according to EPA testing (which combines city and highway driving according to their test procedures, rather than the steady state of 53 mph it runs Lightyear) Tesla and Lucid achieved 5.26 miles per kilowatt-hour.

Lightyear will soon enter its next phase of testing, where it will submit the vehicle for safety testing and to WLTP for true scale certification. 
Deliveries for the One are expected to begin next year, and we hope to eventually get one batch and hit numbers like we’d expect in the global market.
