Unveiling the 2024 Hyundai Sonata with a bold and updated design

The Korean automaker, Hyundai, revealed the upcoming Hyundai Sonata 2024 with mid-life “facelift” updates for the eighth-generation model that was launched in 2019.

Four years into the life cycle of the eighth-generation Sonata, the updated Hyundai Sonata sedan has received more than just a midlife facelift, with an all-new front end and cabin design inspired by the latest Kona.

Earlier, its smaller sister, the Hyundai Elantra 2024, was revealed in its version for the Korean market. We will introduce you to the most important innovations that the 2024 Sonata obtained in this report.

The updated Hyundai Sonata 2024

It belongs to the mid-size sedan category, and has received a comprehensive update with new design features, and an appearance derived from Kona, inside and out.

The Sonata is expected to be available with an AWD all-wheel drive system for the first time. The new model aims to improve sales in South Korea, following an increase in demand for the SUV.

It is likely to be a direct competitor to the Toyota Camry which is available as an SUV.

Exterior design

  • More than just a midlife facelift for the eighth-generation model, the 2024 Sonata has gained a bold exterior design inspired by the Grandeur and Kona.
  • In general, the latest car in the Korean brand’s lineup looks more daring in its design after the substantial updates it received.
  • Noteworthy visual updates include a revamped front end, redesigned bumpers, and a separate headlight design.
  • The changes focus on the front end, most notably the front end with a full-width LED DRL strip that extends above a lower-profile grille featuring concealed main beam units, in the same design identity as the new Hyundai Kona, Staria minivan and larger Hyundai Azera.
  • A more pronounced dome has been added to the hood, while the chrome strip that runs from the belt line to the headlights with integrated DRL has been removed.
  • In addition, the air intake heads up the changes to the side profile, and the updated model wears exclusive new-design alloy wheels up to 19 inches in size for the N Line flagship.
  • At the rear, the Sonata sports H-shaped taillights that carry a flatter identity with a thick, full-width light bar that extends across the trunk, featuring the brand’s “Parametric Pixel” design language, as seen on the all-electric Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models.
  • Notable changes lie in the rear bumper, which adopts a more angular design inspired by the Tucson and i30 sedans, making the car look aggressive from the rear.
  • The brand’s H badge is positioned slightly lower under the extended light strip with 4 tailpipes.

Interior Design

  • The updated Korean Hyundai Sonata 2024 has acquired a completely new cabin, the latest features and an increase in cabin quality with many changes in terms of design compared to the current version.
  • Inside, the dashboard is completely new, with a similar look to the new Kona and what is expected to be the interior of the next-generation Santa Fe.
  • The interior sees several technical changes, the current 10.25-inch wide touchscreen has increased to 12.3-inch and is now housed in an impressive curved display similar to the BMW iDrive 8 displays including a new display for the existing 12-inch digital instrument cluster 3 inches in one piece.
  • It appears to run Hyundai’s latest Connected Vehicle Operating System (ccOS), with support for over-the-air software updates, an updated interface, and a GPU provided by Nvidia.
  • Also new to note is the all-new four-point steering wheel, with a steering column-mounted gear selector by wire to save space in the center console that allowed the Mark to extend the center armrest and add a palm rest for the driver.
  • Other visual updates can be found in the design of the full-length air conditioning vent, a new touch-type climate control panel, USB-C charging ports, a streamlined center console with added storage and a larger armrest, and a revised interior color palette.

Mechanical specifications

  • On a mechanical level, the current version is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 213 kW and 422 Nm, with power sent to the front wheels only via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
  • Hyundai has not yet revealed the technical specifications of the facelifted 2024 Sonata, but it is not expected to receive substantial revisions under the hood.
  • However, spy photos revealed a sticker with AWD written on it for the first time.
