New 54 kWh battery pack for Sono Scion sun-powered car
Munich-based Sono Motors has updated the offer of the only solar car, called the Sono Sion, and replaced the battery with a completely new one, and the new battery gives it better range and better charging power than the previous battery. Sono said the decision to upgrade the car’s electric powertrain was made after a comprehensive survey conducted by existing owners who booked the car.
The Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery is one of the safest batteries on the market today, and does not use traditional elements such as cobalt, nickel and manganese.
In contrast to the previous 35 kWh battery pack, which had a maximum range of 255 km, the new battery pack has a capacity of 54 kWh, and the Sion offers a greater range and an improved range of 305 km.

Aside from the new battery pack, the Sono Sion solar car remains unchanged from the production prototype shown at the all-digital CES 2021.
On the other hand, the battery charge rate increased from 50 kW to 75 kW.
In addition, battery life has seen a jump of up to 3,000 cycles or up to 900,000 km.
However, the maximum power and torque ratings of the three-phase synchronous motor with which this battery is mated remain at 120 kW and 270 Nm of torque respectively.
More than 90% of owners who pre-booked the car flagged it down for a more powerful battery pack, said Laurin Hand, CEO of Sono Motors.
Hence, the decision was made to purchase a new battery pack for the solar car, before the car reached the production line.
To date, the company has already had more than 13,000 reservations for the Sion solar vehicle.
In an interview with
CrowdDesk in April 2020 , Lauren Hahn, CEO and co-founder of Sono Motors, said trial production of the Sono Sion solar vehicle will begin in September 2021. Development may be delayed a bit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Series production was scheduled to begin in 2022 at Saab’s former production plant in Trollhättan, Sweden, through a partnership with NEVS.
As Hahn mentioned to Bloomberg in July of last year, who said that Sono Sion will only be available in black for the solar-powered car.
It is worth noting that thanks to the structure made entirely of solar panels, the emergence of Sono Scion in a crowd of electric cars or electric start-ups will not be a concern for Sono.
The Sono Sion’s body has 248 solar cells built into it, making it the first car to charge in this way, because most solar-powered cars have cells on the roof or over the hood, like the solar cells placed over the hood
of the Dutch Lightyear One. .
Solar cells in Sono Sion

In Sion,
solar cells are positioned all over the body so that some cells are always in the direct path of sunlight during the day.
The Sion solar car can travel an additional 34 km per day (5800 km per year) with the help of solar cells.
I think that this number may increase in the Arab and Gulf region due to the increase in solar energy available there.
Sono Sion specifications
As far as specs are concerned, the front wheels will continue to be driven by a 120 kW/270 Nm electric motor, and the Scion can hit 100 km/h in 9 seconds, with a top speed of 140 km/h.
The battery can be charged to 80 percent in 12.5 hours using a 3.7 kW home charger, and 100 percent in 5 hours using a standard Type 2 charging station. But with the CCS, the Sion can be charged up to 80 percent (range 240 km). ) in just 35 minutes, and with an additional 24 minutes to reach 100 percent battery range.

Other features of the Solar Scion include a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated front seats, ambient lighting, automatic climate control, cruise control, driver, as well as a set of passenger and side airbags, Sion can assist the driver in the rear parking and more.
All of these features come with a standard 2-year/100,000 km warranty.
Sono Motors plans to build a total of 2,60,000 solar-powered cars from Sion over eight years at its Trollhättan plant in Sweden, and Sono said customers have booked more than 13,000 reservations for the Sion solar car, which costs 25,500 euros.
Initially, the car will be available to customers in the European Union.
It is expected that the market will decline, and its price starts from 315 thousand pounds.

The company’s path to market is twofold. It has secured 16,000 preorders of the Sion, the company’s first solar electric vehicle, at an average down payment of $3,000. The compact, five-door, family-friendly hatchback, which will cost $28,700, should make it to consumers by the first half of 2023
