The German Automotive Technical Inspection Authority recommended that the car air conditioner not operate during a short distance or while driving in crowded cities, so as not to lead to corrosion of some parts of the car and loss of engine torque, and it is not effective when operating during those distances.
She advised instead of the air conditioner you can open the windows. The authority added that the air conditioner can be operated on long trips at high speeds, which does not negatively affect the car’s engine and engine torque.
Regarding fuel consumption in both cases, she indicated that the increased rate of fuel consumption when opening the windows is comparable to that of operating the air conditioner.
