Renault has reorganized its French factories to lay the foundation for what will become the largest production center for electric cars in Europe, called Renault ElectriCityy . The first model born from this initiative will be the manufacturing center for its all-new Megane E-Tech Electric car, which will roll off the production lines later this year.

The company has reorganized its facilities in Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz and combined them into a new entity called Renault ElectriCity, and aims to produce 400,000 electric vehicles annually by 2025, creating an additional 700 jobs in the process. A move that was widely supported by the French trade unions.

Renault’s plan to build Renault ElectriCity

Renault’s restructuring is centered on building points of competence for specific operations. Renault plans to have the plant in Douai assemble the company’s electric passenger cars, and build the next Megane e-Tec Electric and two more Part B and Part C models.

According to Renault ElectriCity’s architecture, we expect the previous car to be Renault 5. The latter could be the new Renault 4 crossover, as the brand has confirmed that the car will share the CMF platform with the new Megane E-Tech Electric model.

In return, Maubeuge will run production of Renault’s new Kangoo, along with its badge-designed alternatives for Mercedes and Nissan. An electric version of the pickup truck will arrive at this plant next year. Finally, the Ruitz plant will be dedicated to manufacturing electrical components to support Renault’s and Renault ElectriCity’s two vehicle production lines.

Renault is expected to use local universities in France to prepare training courses for its new employees and conduct research and development tasks for its upcoming electric vehicles. The French brand will also collaborate with a number of start-ups to support its developments and future operations, although the nature of these partnerships has not yet been disclosed, and is still kept secret despite its reference.
