Renault has released the first official images of the new Megane E-Tech Electric SUV . This camouflaged development vehicle offers our best look yet on the new model’s design, and it appears from the design that Megane will borrow some elements from Megane’s hatchback design, and will be converted into a crossover body, similar in size to the Captur.

The reinvented Renault Megane will open a new chapter for the French brand with former Seat president Luca de Meo now in charge of Renault. Dubbed “Renaulution”, the company’s plan will see Renault launch seven all-electric cars by 2025, with the Megane EV crossover having this first range.

The new Megane E-Tech Electric from Renault is based on the CMF-EV platform, the fruit of the collaboration of the Nissan and Renault-Nissan groups, which is also shared with the Nissan Ariya SUV. Similar in structure to its sister Renault, the Renault Megane E-Tech will have a 60 kWh battery pack and a 215 hp electric motor to provide a maximum range of 280 miles.

The engine will also deliver 300Nm of torque, and de Meo had previously promised the new Megane would accelerate from 0-62mph in under eight seconds. He also said Renault might look to develop a longer-range version of the car in the future.

Renault previewed its new electric car last year with a concept it called the Megane E-Vision , although these new images show that some of its features will be watered down for the production model. The suspension has been raised, the taillight bar has been modified and the bulky alloy wheels have been replaced with smaller, production-friendly alternatives.

However, the design of the rest of this early car remains true to the concept. Opened up to the livery, we can identify the same blade sockets on the front bumper, as well as the French brand’s C-shaped daytime running lights. There are also the same lines around the waistline towards the C-pillar of the Renon crossover, while the car features the latest version of the Renault badge as well.

Given the similarities in design, the final Megane E-Tech Electric should have dimensions very close to concept, measuring 4,210 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,505 mm in height. This would give it a similar footprint to the Captur crossover, but with a lower roofline.

De Meo praised the concept, calling it a “packaging masterpiece”. The wheels are pushed into the corners of the body to maximize interior space, providing a similar level of space to larger family hatchbacks with exterior proportions similar to those on the current Megane.

In terms of the new car’s interior, the Megane will have an all-new L-shaped infotainment system. The setup includes a large selfie infotainment system, which is linked to a vast digital instrument cluster, and thanks to the lack of a tunnel for gearshifts, there is space Below the screen for simple additional storage.

Elsewhere on the technology front, an onboard charger will allow 7kW of charging from the charging box, with more advanced compatibility with 3-phase AC. However, the only charging time Renault has revealed so far is that the electric Megane will be able to restore 124 miles of range in 30 minutes on fast charging at its maximum, which is 130 kW of DC current.

We believe the Megane will be revealed this summer before it goes on sale in Europe before the end of the year, but it is unlikely that she will be on British roads until 2022. We expect a starting price of between £35,000 and £40,000. Which means that it will be in the Middle East by the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

French brand Renault promises that there will be many electric cars bearing the Renault Sinley badge, as well as the Megane E-Tech Electric. “As with the first generation Megane, this Megane bears the letter E. And this is just the beginning, and a whole range of vehicles will be based on our CMF-EV platform,” De Meo said.

However, Renault is likely to make a set of separate models, rather than a set of electric vehicles under the Megane banner.
