How to reduce pollutants emitted from cars

Although petrol cars are bad for the environment, modern cars are 10 to 20 times cleaner in terms of emissions than cars used in the 1970s. At the same time, driving carefully and taking care of your vehicle will reduce its environmental impact.
Reduce emissions

  • Buying a car, whether it is an old model or a modern one, but its size is small! On average, the smaller and modern the car is, the less polluting it is.
  • Check the fuel information label before purchasing.
  • Do you carry out regular maintenance on your car, the maintenance expert will make sure that the engine is safe and running optimally, delivering the necessary power without burning a high percentage of fuel. The maintenance process should include checking some parts such as spark plugs and air filter that may affect the efficiency of the engine.
  • Ensure that the tires have air in the ratio recommended by the manufacturer. When the tire pressure is low, its resistance is high, so the engine works with difficulty, fuel consumption is higher, and the percentage of pollutants emitted from the car, such as carbon monoxide, increases. Check tire pressure once a month.
  • Avoid fuel leakage in the pump, do not fill the gasoline tank to the end because the gasoline evaporates and this is considered a pollutant to the environment because it is transmitted directly to the atmosphere.

 Avoid pollutants

  • Before entering a long tunnel and in a traffic jam, close the car windows and turn off the air conditioner or adjust it to recirculate the air that is already there. Otherwise, pollution levels inside the car can be more than ten times higher than outside pollutants.
  • Turn off the engine in traffic or when someone is waiting.
  • Do not run your car’s engine indoors, as toxic fumes can build up. The most toxic exhaust gas is carbon monoxide which is colorless and odorless and is slightly lighter than air.
  • If you can, use the trains more often.

Pedestrians and cyclists are exposed to much lower levels of pollution than motorists and less nitrogen dioxide.
