Reputation is significant in the luxury compact sports car segment with two class titans, the most famous being the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. The two cars offer both modern design and sophisticated interiors, as well as four-cylinder engines for improved fuel economy.
While the C-Class is less powerful and less sporty, the BMW 3 Series is more fuel-efficient, clocking in at 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway versus 21/31 mpg in the C-Class.
Power and fuel efficiency are not everything. Maneuverability, ride comfort, quality and features all play a part in the mix. The competition is fierce here, as they offer well-built cabins from high-quality materials. However, there are some compromises in some of the plastic components, but both are better than most competitors. The two classics except for the Audi A4.
Comfort and spaciousness are good in the front seats and narrow room for the rear seat legroom in the two cars, although the design of the new BMW 3 Series has increased by an extra inch of wheelbase mostly dedicated to the legs of the rear seat, so it is slightly wider than the C Class.
In terms of technology , the 3 Series and C-Class offer many innovations, including information services, voice control, navigation systems and entertainment materials. Command sometimes comes half a step behind in being completely modern with a premium interface and many features inside. The sometimes confusing but impressive BMW IDRIVE system adds BMW apps to integrate smartphones with music and social media as well as the standard multimedia you’d expect.
Safety and Security : Both cars received five stars in the crash tests as an overall score, but failed to achieve five stars in the side crash tests, where the C Class and the BMW 3 Series got four stars. However, the new 3 Series offers features more advanced than those of the middle-aged C-Class – features like wide-angle and birds-eye cameras for reversing.
While the numbers are in the BMW 3 Series’ favour, it may be difficult for some to compare the two cars coolly, as they differ dramatically on the outside and inside, in the ride and handling, and the overall cabin atmosphere. For those looking for luxury with a rush of performance, the 3 Series is the better choice, while those looking in the direction of relaxation and luxury comfort may prefer the C-Class. At the same time, each car offers a wide range of grades, versions and interior additions, giving you the opportunity to make it yours alone: luxury, sporty or comfortable
