For only a few generations, both the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata have been on the roster of tough competition for mid-size cars such as the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord and Ford Fusion. For a number of reasons, including its impressive design and fuel economy, both have a leading value in their class.
If you are interested in these two models, how can you choose one of them? To start with, there is an important piece of information for 2015, which allows you to choose whether to buy now, or wait a few months. Hyundai Sonata has been completely restyled for 2015, while the Kia Optima has added more in its current form. You might expect that the Sonata was distinguished, but it is not that simple, the two models are very close in terms of value and features, although there are subtle differences that may tip the scales in one direction.

Both cars are powered by direct injection with 4-cylinder engines, with a capacity of either 2.4 liters or 2.0 liters. The Optima has two versions, one with a 200-horsepower engine and another with a 274-horsepower engine. Similarly, the Sonata comes with a 185-horsepower engine and another 245-horsepower engine. Both cars run very efficiently and relatively smoothly and well, allowing highways to pass without much turbocharged action.
Both cars are powered by highly efficient engines and feature fuel economy. According to EPA ratings, the Sonata has a fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. And there are models of the same generation, also clocking 36 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. As for the 2015 Sonata Eco, it has a 1.6-liter engine with a seven-speed transmission, and the fuel consumption rate is 28/38 per gallon.
Both cars shine noticeably in terms of interior design, Hyundai has improved the quality of the Sonata’s cabin well. And although Kia added an acoustic windshield last year, we’re still in favor of tuning the steering wheel and the Optima is a little better, has more naturally a lot of weight and is better if you generally do quick maneuvers.
Interior space and boot space remain quite similar between these two models, both in terms of dimensions and in terms of practicality. In terms of the front seats, they are good and exceed the normal rate, while in terms of the rear seats and legroom, they are acceptable to all. The Sonata seats feel better because they have heated seats and they are all leather.
In terms of safety, the Sonata was the best and impressive, although its performance was not first-class, it received a high rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS ) and also from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NIHTSA ), has made tremendous progress and has achieved a score of 9 for its safety features including forward collision warning and rear alert features. The Optima also got an automatic safety system and several safety features, including disc brakes, dynamic stability control, and hill climb assist.
Both cars excel in their technology features, Bluetooth services are present on both, as well as a rear view camera, and another feature in the Kia car is the UVO system for voice commands to operate the phone or adjust the volume. As well as the navigation system, the Hyundai car has an integrated automatic system in addition to the Apple CarPlay feature to allow you to use a mobile phone through the car.

The design remains the focal point of interest. You might think the Sonata, with its completely redesigned design, has surpassed the Optima in design. Last year, these two cars were opposite in design, and strangely enough, this year’s design makes both cars similar in design in terms of exterior, interior design, functions and existing features.
Comparing the two cars, as of the 2015 model year, the restyled Sonata didn’t necessarily give the trump card against its Optima cousin. Kia still has the feeling of sporty driving, and the Sonata also has the sparkling value in terms of looks, although with good comfort and Kia’s distinctive design, it lacks the new active safety features that Hyundai offered. We still recommend the Sonata, but it’s ultimately up to you.
