You also change the air filters in your home whenever autumn comes. About 80% of all new cars come with a similar filter called a cabin air filter.

A cabin air filter serves a similar purpose to filtering air in a home. It helps filter the air of dust and allergens, and prevents pollutants from entering the vehicle through the ventilation system.

Cabin air filters first appeared in the 1980s but became more popular in 1995. Not many people know that their cars have these filters.

Over time, cars can develop a musty odor inside the cabin, so changing the cabin air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles is recommended by most manufacturers which helps eliminate odors and promotes fresh air.

And the cabin air filter can carry a lot of dirt and debris, especially if it isn’t changed after 60,000 miles.

Cabin air filters generally need 15 to 20 minutes to be changed. They are often located behind or under the front panel. The costs of changing it vary by manufacturer, but it is relatively inexpensive.

Since most people don’t know they have these filters, when they see one full of dirt they are excited to change it.

As we head towards fall and winter, we will often have to lock our car windows and may also have to use the air conditioner to heat the car, which may bring with it polluted air due to dirty filters.

Ensure that you are breathing fresh air by having a clean cabin air filter and have it checked periodically at your service center during your next visit.
