Volkswagen! It’s been at the top of the city car segment for a decade, and it’s still going strong
Volkswagen Up has not achieved the same success as the Polo and Golf in the world, despite what it has achieved globally since its launch in 2011, thus revolutionizing the city car sector, offering a level of quality and maturity unprecedented in the sector. It was presented as a smaller version of the larger wagons, but it has changed, and has taken a smarter approach.

The Volkswagen Up is Volkswagen’s smallest car. And the best-in-class city car continued to be. Maintaining its leading position, rivaled only by the new electric Fiat 500 which we believe is superior to the electric version of the Volkswagen Up, and Volkswagen expects this model to be significantly the best-selling worldwide.
Volkswagen Up is a comfortable car that feels stable on the road and fun to drive. It is designed to work in the city. The 2022 Volkswagen Up is still one of the best city cars today, and it was the main player in the market among three cars that included the Seat Mi and Skoda Citigo. Reviews show that age is not a barrier to excellence.
Volkswagen Up 2022 competitors
Much like its siblings the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108 and Citroën C1, they form the Volkswagen trio, and feature some engine and specification options. As is usually the case, Up was the smartest of the three. If you like the idea of Up but for some reason don’t like Volkswagens, then the SEAT Mii and Skoda Citigo are the ones for you.

However, neither of them is available with a petrol engine anymore. Both are electric. The 108 and Igo offer the same low cost. Overall, the Hyundai i10 is one of the best options in the city car segment. The same goes for the Kia Picanto, with its more powerful turbocharged engine.
Volkswagen Volkswagen Up 2022 quality
With only one engine option available in the new Volkswagen Up, and a very low-powered engine, it’s clearly focused on city driving. It’s refined and comfortable enough to manage the occasional highway trip, but it lacks performance that will weigh on regular high-speed use.

Some prefer the Up car, for its ease of driving, and the good standard specifications it offers. It’s not so fast that it will get an inexperienced driver into trouble. It is suitable for carrying four people, so if you need to accommodate five people, you need to move to the supermini segment.
2022 Volkswagen Up models
As for the trims, the base 2022 Volkswagen Up comes with more than you might expect, with things like air conditioning and alloy wheels as standard, while the Up Beats trim adds a more powerful audio system, but I’d skip the R-Line as the larger alloys hurt ride quality. In used models, there are countless trim levels and special editions launched over the years.
The exterior design of the Volkswagen Up 2022
Form follows function when it comes to the design of the 2022 Volkswagen Up, with its bright sides, straight tail, steep nose and wheel stops at every corner. However, the overall result was a surprisingly nimble and elegant-looking city car, and the models were unified by stylistic elements such as a strict emphasis on horizontal lines, connecting grille and headlights, and brevity of short corners.

Up front, you see a deeper front bumper with chunky black inserts, as well as LED headlights that have been tuned into the existing headlamp units. It is noticeably smaller than other Volkswagens, yet visually it stands out very much. And the front part seems to be smiling due to the lines of the bumper. A narrow black strip runs between the headlights (with integrated daytime running lights). It has the Volkswagen logo in the middle, and it is the only chrome element on the front end.
At the sides, large surface flares and alternating convex and concave shapes define the car’s silhouette. With a slight concave groove above the side sill creating an accent in the continuous surface. The side profile shows no seams or trim except for the wheel caps and the shape of the side windows. As for the wheels, they were placed in strong casings, the side surfaces of which – the so-called wheel mirrors – are very large, and small wheels (14 to 16 inches) appear visually larger.

The profile of the short corner windows at the front reflects a formal connection from the lower window sill to the mantle. The long ascending line in the rear third of the car matches the line formed by the rear wheel and C-pillar. The interaction between the lines reinforces the image of the rear-wheel-supported C-pillar in interaction with the long wheelbase and short overhangs. The side windows end in a nearly vertical curve all the way to the bumper.

At the rear of the car you discover subtly redesigned taillights, which sit either side of the glass-encased tailgate. Similar to a modern smartphone, its outer casing consists of a transparent glass element. The luggage compartment forms an integral unit with the vertically oriented tail lights. The large taillights are attached to the body at the top. Their red surfaces are very distinctive, especially in their interaction with the white C-shaped elements.
Dimensions of the 2022 Volkswagen Up
The 2022 Volkswagen Up comes in at just 3.54 meters long and features an optimized space for four passengers, with a width of 1.64 meters (without door mirrors). It is one of the smallest four-seater cars.

Volkswagen’s height is 1.48 m. Its overall length is made up of significantly short overhangs and a very long wheelbase (2.42 metres), and its body design makes full use of available enclosed space.
Interior cab design of the 2022 Volkswagen Up

Volkswagen has a reputation for delivering stylish interiors, and the Up is no exception. The base model isn’t quite as flashy, offering different shades of gray and black throughout, but you can opt for a higher spec model or even add a ‘Sharkskin’ option package for around £300. The second model gets you a white or black version and a brighter dashboard.
Driving mode in Volkswagen Up 2022

Focus has the driver’s seat height adjusted as standard. The steering wheel is only adjusted for shelf, not reach, so you may find that you can’t get it in the perfect position if you’re tall.
The dashboard of the Volkswagen Up 2022 interior

Everything is very logical, and all the major controls are conveniently grouped high on the dashboard. And with no bulky touchscreen to accommodate, the Up cabin feels clutter-free, and you won’t have to waste time searching for the right button. Although it is reasonably designed, it has a very attractive design as well.
The quality of materials in the cabin of the 2022 Volkswagen Up
Volkswagen has introduced some customization upgrades, options various with a range of bold dashboard finishes. Overall, the interior is identical to the old car, which means you get premium materials and a solid build quality.

It’s a cleverly designed cabin that’s surprisingly spacious and comfortable. It’s simple yet high-quality and can be customized with body-color panels. The black finish looks great, but in sunny weather it reflects light and can be a distraction.

The Beats give a brighter finish to the cabin, and of course not everything is rosy, there are some cheap plastics dotting the cabin but it’s sturdy and feels well built. It enhances the sense of quality, and the base models still offer good quality, but they are more like a charcoal face.
The spaciousness and spaciousness of the Volkswagen Up 2022
Volkswagen offers carefully planned up. With an interior ceiling design that accommodates tall passengers in the rear seats. Offering slightly more headroom in the front than in the rear seats, the same goes for legroom. The Volkswagen manages to provide space and comfort for (approximately) four adults and luggage, and you might want to look elsewhere if you need an extra seat in the back.

Tall drivers can feel comfortable behind the wheel, as there is plenty of head and leg room to stretch out. Shoulder room is also good, although it’s a relatively cramped car. There’s also plenty of light entering the cabin through the expansive glass area, and the slim dashboard helps a sense of space, too. But there is less room offered in the rear to accommodate two adults.
Volkswagen Up 2022 seats
The rear seats are installed slightly higher than those in the front, which reduces headroom a bit, as taller people may have to fit in the front.

Five-door models have easier access to the rear seats, but getting into the rear of a three-door isn’t out of the question. It should be noted that the rear seat is designed for two people only, without a central seat belt.
The trunk of a 2022 Volkswagen Up
The trunk is larger than most competitive city cars can offer, and the Up offers a useful 251 liters of boot space, putting it close to the wider Hyundai i10, and ahead of the Up over cars like the Twingo and Peugeot 108.
Fold the rear seats down to 959 liters, there’s an adjustable stowage floor, and every version gets a 60:40 split rear bench seat. And with the floor plate raised, the loading area is completely flat.
Information and entertainment in the 2022 Volkswagen Up
In the 2022 version, you get a complementary system called Maps + More on higher models. With TomTom navigation, Eco Coach and audio streaming. It consists of a separate screen, which is mounted on a dedicated stand above the dashboard.
The system isn’t perfect. The app often ran slowly, and we found it didn’t respond well to entering a destination. You can close the app and use Google Maps for satellite navigation if you prefer, and music, Bluetooth and other functions can be controlled via regular buttons on the dashboard.
It also provides Bluetooth for broadcasting, phone calls, satellite navigation, and a trip computer. There is a small color screen on certain trim levels, it’s not big and it’s not packed with connectivity features. The Beats model also gets a 300-watt stereo with seven speakers, a subwoofer and a digital sound processor.
Volkswagen Up 2022 engine
In the new versions of the Volkswagen Up, you are left with the choice of a single engine, with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit producing 65 horsepower and 95 Nm of torque. It’s a very willing unit, and it doesn’t look too bad while it’s accelerating. But the suffering begins at higher speeds. Volkswagen offers another turbocharged engine that produces 113 horsepower, but it is for the sporty GTI model.

As for gearboxes, the standard five-speed manual transmission is the only option. It has well-chosen ratios, so it’s easy to pick up speed and can drive comfortably on the highway. The automatic transmission is only available in used copies, and it really spoils the driving experience, so avoid it.
Driving impressions of the 2022 Volkswagen Up
“It may be small and relatively low-cost, but Volkswagen has managed to bring the same driving features to its range for the 2022 Volkswagen Up. The 2022 Volkswagen Up is an effortless car to drive, and you feel the quality of engineering that went into it, even from a short drive around Building. It’s this sense of engineered quality that makes the Up feel like a bigger, more expensive car.
Steering in the 2022 Volkswagen Up
The steering is a particular highlight, light enough to park easily but not so light that it feels disconnected at speed. Best of all, it looks extremely accurate, so you know exactly what’s going on up front at all times. Whatever kind of trip you’re on, the Volkswagen Up gives you confidence when you’re behind the wheel.

The options might add a bit of sportiness to the driving experience, but the VW Up handles with poise and confidence, with as much fun as you could reasonably expect. The steering precision helps, and even with the softer suspension, body roll is controlled unless you’re really pushing it and it’s secure without being dull.
Suspension in the 2022 Volkswagen Up
One of the main virtues of the car is its supple ride. For such a small car, it does a great job of maintaining control over speed bumps at low speeds; It handles well the potholes and broken asphalt you’re likely to find on your local high street.

Driving remains comfortable at high speeds, when on highways. Here, the upper bowl effectively hydrates her expansion joints, rather than allowing them to shiver through her body. Simply put, it’s way more advanced than many of its competitors.
Driving comfort in Volkswagen Up 2022
It rides impressively well, although this depends somewhat on specs. However, it is one of the best cars in the city car segment, although it is one of the oldest competitors, and is especially useful when traveling through bad urban roads. It is important to note that on newer models larger aluminum wheels may affect ride quality.

The standard Up and Beats ride on fine 15-inch alloys, but the White and Black versions sport 16-inch wheels and the R-Line adds a sport suspension, all of which compromise ride quality somewhat.
Volkswagen Up 2022 speed
Most Up versions are equipped with the 1.0-liter engine, going from 0-62 mph in 15.6 seconds, with a top speed of 101 mph, while the 113-hp version of the GTI achieves the same speed in 8.8 seconds, which is even more impressive. Its top speed is 122 miles per hour.
Refinement and noise levels in the 2022 Volkswagen Up
The Up is Volkswagen’s least expensive model but it’s one of the best in its class, despite its age, which means it’s more usable even on long trips. High standards of build quality are the factor here, with very few vibrations making their way into the cabin.

At low to medium speeds, noise from other sources is well controlled. Small tires mean thin tires, so tire noise is reasonably low on most surfaces, and wind noise isn’t a problem. Until high speeds reach, it begins to reveal itself, in an average and reasonable manner.
Operating costs of the 2022 Volkswagen Up
Volkswagen Up’s running costs are among the lowest for petrol cars. Models powered by the new 60hp 1.0-liter engine under stricter WLTP regulations will officially get a combined mileage of 50.4-52.3mpg.”

In the real world, it gets 50 mpg, maybe more than 60 mpg depending on how you drive, and automatic transmissions use more fuel than manual transmissions, which is another reason to rule them out.
Safety and security equipment in the Volkswagen Up 2022
Standard equipment includes front and side airbags, seat belt pretensioners and load limiters, Isofix child seat anchor points, hill assist and tire pressure monitoring.

All models in all new versions have ESC as standard, as well as lane assist, although automatic emergency braking is not available as an option on any version.
Crash test of the 2022 Volkswagen Up
Volkswagen Up has been tested twice by Euro NCAP. One in 2011 when it was launched, the other in 2019, and in the first test, it scored five stars, but in the last test it got three stars.
In 2011 testing the Up achieved 89% for adult protection and 80% for child protection, pedestrian mitigation was quite low at 46% and – as a result of being a short car – it managed 86% for safety assistance.
Volkswagen Up 2022 reliability
Volkswagen entered the top 10 of the most recent HonestJohn.co.uk satisfaction index. Owners said the cars were reliable and well-made, with over 88% of owners saying they were satisfied overall.

VW Up is excellent if you want a car that is reliable and cheap to run. It’s also inexpensive to fix if something goes wrong. Her troubles are few and far between, she is known to slip up.
Used Volkswagen Up price
Because the Volkswagen Up is still in production as a petrol car as well as in electric form, and it holds its value well, expect to pay upwards of £12,000 for a car with less than 5,000 miles on it. Higher-spec models like the Black Edition and Beats have an added advantage.

If you’re on a smaller budget, a 2018 model with less than 50,000 miles a mid-spec Move could fetch around £7,000. Prices drop to £5,000 or less in older models but you’ll rarely find a car with low miles for its age, as it is a city car.
Features of the Volkswagen Up 2022
