The Mazda CX-5 2022 made its debut early a few days ago in China when the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published images of the completely restyled domestic version as part of the Mazda CX-5’s crossover homologation process. On the other hand, its North American cousin was officially revealed today with the same changes in the advanced design, changes that are difficult to notice easily at first sight.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 now comes in eight trim levels: S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, and Turbo Signature. Pricing starts at $27,125 including destination and reaches $39,875 for the Turbo Signature.
A look at the Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 needs a little more thought and a closer look to see that each headlight as well as the taillight assembly now accommodates a pair of rectangular LEDs to give Mazda’s best-selling North American vehicle an even sharper appearance. Zoom-Zoom designers also modified the front grille by giving it a cool 3D-like texture to replace the outdated grille design of the 2021 CX-5.
The Grand Touring Reserve model went as it was replaced for 2022 by the new 2.5 Turbo model. Mazda says current versions are equipped with an engine that includes a turbocharger , and feature additional design revisions to separate it from naturally-aspirated CX-5s. There are gloss black interior trim pieces visible from the outside, with red accents and stitching inside the cabin.

Advancement to the 2.5 Turbo Signature brings a more elegant design with body-color wheel arches and alloy wheels painted satin silver. Inside the Mazda CX-5, the Japanese manufacturer has installed premium materials including natural wood and Nappa leather to elevate the CX-5’s semi-luxury status among SUVs. There’s also a new drive select switch called Mi-Drive, along with redesigned seats that I’m told offer even more comfort.
Transmission in Mazda CX-5
There are more changes than meets the eye, as the 2022 Mazda CX-5 benefits from a more responsive six-speed automatic transmission that delivers smoother acceleration. Not only that, the compact SUV now features a different suspension to improve vibration performance and reduce road noise thanks to a new damped control structure and higher frame stiffness.
Another significant update is the all-wheel drive system that has been made standard across the range. In fact, Mazda will offer AWD as standard equipment on all CX models henceforth. It ranges from the compact CX-30 to the mid-size CX-9, and every SUV the company sells in North America will have a comprehensive system that fits even the entry level.

It should be noted that Mazda has already confirmed that the next generation Mazda CX-5 will be a completely different vehicle by switching to a new platform based on rear-wheel drive with six inline engines. But it is unclear when the new model will be revealed, but it will take some time to reach the US market given that the current model has just been updated and the variety of markets is still undetermined. And only signals appeared regarding the US market. And until more appears, enjoy the CX family from Mazda.
