What should you do when the car is overheating

The car often overheats, especially in very hot weather, but this is something that rarely happens in modern cars. But some well-made cars can heat up. If you’re on a busy road on a sweltering hot day and the temperature indicator on the dashboard starts to rise or there is an indication of a malfunction, you need to take several steps to get the car back in action:

  • When the first indication of overheating appears, you must turn off the car air conditioning and open the windows in order to reduce the loads on your car engine and help it cool.
  • If the car continues to heat up, turn on the heater, so that the heat is transferred from the motor to the passenger area in order to reduce the heat in the motor somewhat.
  • If you stop at a traffic light and the indicator continues to rise, put the car in neutral or park and speed up the engine a little by depressing the accelerator pedal. Doing so turns on the water pump and increases the speed of the fan, which pumps more fluid and air than It facilitates the cooling process.
  • Try not to apply pressure on the brakes. If you stop at the signal, reduce the speed until you reach a stage close to stopping, because the pressure on the brake pedal increases the load on the engine and increases its heat.
  • If you notice that your car is about to explode, park your car on the side of the road and open the hood until the car cools down and the engine cools completely
  • Open the radiator cap in this case and do not supply water while the engine is hot, wait until the engine cools down.

Although hot weather is one of the most important causes of engine overheating, there are several reasons that lead to engine overheating. If the car overheats at normal temperature, this may be due to one of these reasons:

  • Low level of cooling water in the radiator
  • There is a leak in the cooling system

If you do not notice a leak in the car, there may be a defect in the thermostat, but unfortunately you cannot change it yourself, but you can drive carefully and avoid the problem with the thermostat. In the case of changing it, wait until the engine cools down, then remove the old thermostat and install the new hoses without the thermostat. If the engine works well after removing it, this indicates that the heating was caused by the thermostat.
