Just a week after the launch of the EV9, Korean automaker Kia has announced the introduction of a new electric mid-size SUV, the EV5, as the brand looks to expand its electric vehicle lineup and accelerate its position in the eco-friendly market.
The Kia Concept EV5 is a preview of what we can expect from Kia’s upcoming all-electric SUV.
The EV5 is classified as a compact crossover SUV, which is scheduled to be officially launched later this year, and we will introduce you to it in this report.

Kia EV5 electric car
- It belongs to the category of new mid-size SUVs that are smaller than the upcoming EV9 SUV, and it is a zero-emissions environmentally friendly car.
- Kia has taken another step forward into the new electric era of automobiles, as it launched the EV9 SUV for America last week after several months of testing.
- The EV9 is the company’s first full-size 3-row, and it’s set to become the brand’s flagship electric vehicle when it goes on sale later this year.
- Moreover, Kia released the EV6 in May 2021, built on the E-GMP platform, which has been a huge success so far, selling more than 80,000 units last year alone and putting Kia on the map as a real competitor in the electric vehicle market, with a range of up to 310 miles.
Specifications of the electric Kia EV5
Exterior design
- The images provide a preview of the all-electric SUV production model that will be launched first in China later this year.
- The vehicle’s design combines disparate elements of landscape and modern technology with sustainable mobility solutions for a better future for all to create a unique SUV.
- With a quick look at the new images, it appears that the Kia EV5 is influenced by the same design philosophy as the recently launched EV9 SUV, giving an exciting glimpse into the future plans of the Korean brand in the electric vehicle market.
- Not surprisingly, there are significant similarities between it and the EV9, both of which feature what the company calls its “conflicting opposites” design philosophy.
- It retains the key features of the EV9, most notably sharp vertical lines and a new front end design known as the Digital Tiger Face.
- Official photos from Kia show the car in deep shadow, perhaps to highlight its highly sculpted body panels.
- It is expected to be introduced in the future as an electric alternative to the Sportage, with wide fenders, sharp lines, and large 21-inch wheels with a rear spoiler to enhance airflow.
Interior Design
- Moving on to the interior of the test version, we find a somewhat futuristic cabin based on innovative user-focused interior engineering, featuring two rows of seats instead of three.
- Like its big brother, the EV9, the EV5 features revolving seats that can rotate 90 degrees to help passengers get in and out, and has made use of a number of recycled materials for the seats, doors, and front dashboard.
- The completely flat floor and ample space inside the cabin create a ‘space to coexist’, but we expect some difference in the production version.
- The interior of the EV5 provides the perfect environment for occupants to relax, as the interior’s color palette brings calm and purity while the central fascia emphasizes the design philosophy through the application of contrasting materials.
- While the large and wide panoramic screen provides higher levels of content for passengers to enjoy.
- Meanwhile, the car gets a glass roof that houses panels to store solar energy.
Mechanical specifications
- On a mechanical level, the Korean automaker hasn’t revealed range or charging times yet, but it will likely ride on the same 800-volt E-GMP platform as other new Hyundai and Kia models, offering high-range capabilities, super-fast charging, and V2L capability.
Official launch date for the Kia EV5 electric car
- The commercial version of the EV5 will first go on sale in the Chinese market later at the end of this year, and the company said that it has no plans at this time to sell the EV5 in any other markets, and stated that details regarding any future plans for other global markets will be done in due course.
