India’s Tata enters the world of electric cars

In a recent presentation to investors, Tata Motors revealed the extent to which it supports the Tata Group companies and will support the launch of electric vehicles such as the Tata Altroz EV. While we have already talked about the participation of Tata Autocomp and Tata Chemicals in the electric drive, two other companies of the Tata group should be noted here: Tata Power and Tata Motors Finance.
Tata Power is responsible for providing home charging installation for all Tata Electric Vehicle customers in India. And the Indian power generation company is creating a public charging network to make the use of electric vehicles really convenient.
The Tata Power has already installed a 355+ charger year all over the country, and plans to increase this number to 700 by the middle of fiscal year 2022, which is likely to be the launch of Tata Altroz EV time in India. Tata Motors Finance will help large fleets procure electric vehicles with structured solutions.
A report from ET Auto in January said that the launch of the Tata Altroz EV in India will take place in the second half of the year. Before the Altroz EV, the Tigor EV facelift will hit showrooms, and that could happen as early as the next quarter (April-June 2021). The Tata Altroz EV will be the first electric hatchback from Tata Motors to enter showrooms after the Tiago EV and Nano EV projects (including the Jayem Neo) have not advanced to the commercial stage.
The Tata Altroz EV will be the second derivative of the Tata Altroz after the iTurbo, which has a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 110 hp and 140 Nm.
The Tata Altroz EV will be Tata’s third electric vehicle in India after the Tata Tigor EV and the Tata Nexon EV. Judging from the version presented at Auto Expo 2020m, much of the development of the new Tata electric vehicle has been completed, and road testing of the Tata Altroz EV began in early 2020. The Altroz EV is calculated to be the second or third of Tata’s six upcoming vehicles. Or variants in 2021. Here’s everything we know about India’s first luxury electric hatchback.
Designed by Tata Altroz EV

The Tata Altroz EV was revealed in semi-production form at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show (March 2019). It debuted in India about a year later at the 2020 Auto Show with an updated design that was ready for production. The fenders were new and the electric car’s ground clearance appeared to have increased compared to the Swiss show car. The alloy wheels were smaller, the EV badge was moved to the bottom of the tailgate and the pole antenna replaced the more expensive shark fin type.
Compared to the Altroz, the Tata Altroz EV has a cleaner but funky design. At the front, the upper grille and lower grille have been replaced by a glossy black enclosed panel and body-color panels respectively. The top panel features the teal EV badge, while the bottom panel is decorated with the distinctive triple arrow pattern. Instead of a full-width chrome strip, a teal stripe adorns the bumper rim.

On the sides, the unique 16-inch Tata Altrose electric wheels will be painted silver with a teal highlight. The blue EV badge on the bottom of the tailgate is in place for the same reason. Inside, apart from the cone blue accents on various elements such as the air conditioner vents, the center console and the dashboard, expect white or light seat upholstery featuring a triple arrow pattern.

The Tata Altroz EV will be the first electric vehicle with the Alfa-Arc platform. It will feature Ziptron’s electric vehicle technology, which consists of a PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor) and lithium-ion battery pack with an IP67 dust and water resistance rating. A real-world range of at least 250 km, DC fast charging (can charge to 80% in 60 minutes), regenerative brakes, and an 8-year/1.6 lakh km powertrain warranty is expected for a new electric vehicle. Tata Motors engineers successfully encapsulated the battery pack in the Altrose without affecting ground clearance or cabin space.

Specifications of the upcoming Tata electric car
Some of the above parameters may be applied to select configurations, as the Tata Altroz EV may come in more than one range variant. Tata feels that some customers may use the Altroz EV in the city and use their other vehicles for long trips and trips. To them, lower range (a lower capacity battery pack) and/or lower motor output may not seem like a compromise and is compatible with their use. Shailesh Chandra, President of Tata Motors, suggested that the company could offer an affordable, low-spec variant targeting city customers. The low-range version will make the price of the Altroz EV very attractive.
Features

In addition to the aforementioned 16-inch alloy wheels, the Tata Altroz EV should be equipped with features such as LED headlights, a semi-digital instrument cluster, blue ambient lighting, the ZConnect touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wearable key and much more. . Note that the standard variant is not available with LED headlights. Expect the trim selection to be relatively smaller and even the basic configuration to pack plenty of attractive features as the Altroz EV is aimed at personal vehicle buyers rather than the fleet segment where ambitions differ.
Tata Motors has made distinctive changes for the first time to an electric version with the Altroz EV. The dashboard has been redesigned and the center console’s flow is different with a “walk-through” effect (see photo above). The parking brake (electric) and the drive limiter are precisely integrated into the center armrest, which has a compartment for small items.
The Tata Altroz EV will feature connected vehicle functionality for electric vehicles that can be operated via the new Tata iRA app. In addition to the standard functions, it should allow checking the state and time of charge, battery pack health, engine health, and charging history.

The price and positioning of Tata Gears
The Tata Altroz EV is expected to be priced between INR 10-12 (ex-showroom). While the price depends on the level of powertrain localization , Tata Motors says the difference between the ICE and the EV will be less than 25 percent. Additionally, Shailesh Chandra, head of the passenger car business unit at Tata Motors, says the price difference between the petrol or diesel variants of the Altroz and Nexon should be kept logically over the EV variants. For reference prices for XZ Diesel variants vary by 25.5 percent.
The Tata Group plans to manufacture battery cells (Tata Chemicals is setting up a pilot cell production plant in Dholera, Gujarat for application to Tata electric vehicles) and create an ecosystem to make Tata electric vehicles affordable including the localization of the battery and motor by Tata Autocomp. These steps, along with the battery price drop, will lead to a gradual decrease in prices for Tata electric vehicles in the coming years.
Shailesh Chandra talked about launching a Tata Altroz EV in an interview with thehindubusinessline.com recently. He described the Altroz EV as the “biggest” launch of an electric vehicle from Tata Motors to date. Chandra said the company sees ALFA’s architecture as a huge advantage and thanks to the modular platform, it can electrify its entire group if it wants to. At a lower price than the Nexon EV, the Tata Altroz EV has a chance of becoming India’s best-selling electric vehicle for personal use.

Tata Altroz EV launch date
Prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tata Motors had scheduled the launch of the Altroz EV between January and July 2021. The launch is now expected in the second half of the year, in the festival season.
