The coupe’s distinctive body design is more about style and sport than practicality. We’re talking about real coupes here, not huge imitation SUVs or the so-called “four-door coupe”. The best coupes – as in the case of two-door and aft sliding cars – made up for the lack of back-seat space and luggage room with fun-to-drive features and luxurious accommodations.
Whether your car is commuting on a daily basis, or reserved for the weekend, these coupes serve you in many ways, and they are preferred by the masters, as well as our favorites, as evidenced by our list of the best new coupes for 2022.
Toyota GR86
The second generation Toyota GR86 is scheduled for release in 2022, and while it’s brand new, it follows the same rear-wheel drive formula as the first generation car. Developed again in partnership with the Subaru BRZ, the 2022 GR86 will be powered by a horizontally opposite four-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission.
This time around, Toyota addressed our major complaint with the last generation and gave the GR86 more horsepower for 2022. The new model is powered by a horizontally opposed 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower, 23 more than the previous 2.0-liter treadmill of the outgoing model. The result is an exceptional driving experience for the price, and a drivetrain worthy of the top of the list of this year’s best coupe .
Subaru BRZ
Prioritizing affordability and agility over high horsepower and exclusivity at a premium price, the 2022 Subaru BRZ continues to maintain its status as the all-encompassing sports car for all. The completely redesigned rear-wheel drive coupe remains a unique entry in Subaru’s all-wheel drive lineup.
The same is true of the mechanical twin, the Toyota 86. With a 228-horsepower, naturally aspirated flat-four engine, the BRZ is more powerful than before, which at least partially addressed one of our biggest complaints. Combine that with a low center of gravity plus aggressive curb weight, and a 2+2 hatchback setup firmly engineered to deliver the seat feel that characterizes all great sports cars.
With a new interior that brings modern technology but maintains the practicality of its predecessor, the Subaru 2022 BRZ outperforms affordable sports car favorites like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and earns the best nod and a place on our list of the best coupes for 2022.
Toyota Supra
It’s been a few years since the Supra rejoined the Toyota lineup after a long hiatus, and they’re great coupes, but despite our growing knowledge, the 2022 Supra remains one of our favorite sports cars. In fact, it’s on our pick as the 2022 Best Coupe.
Although developed and built alongside the BMW Z4 convertible, the Supra coupe presents a personality unique to its Bavarian sibling, even though the two cars share the same powertrain. The latter includes two turbocharged engines, a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 hp and an optional 382 hp 3.0-liter inline-six.
Both feed the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The cabin of the Toyota Supra is surprisingly comfortable and premium, to a large extent pulling its components from the BMW parts box. BMW M4
The BMW M4 2022 is just as exciting as its M3 sedan sibling, but only available as a coupe or convertible. Both our favorite coupes and convertibles, the base hardtop model comes exclusively with rear-wheel drive, a satisfactory manual transmission, and a 473-hp twin-turbo engine.
The Competition class gets an improved 503 hp engine, a fast automatic gearbox, and unique chassis tuning that should peak at faster lap times on the local racetrack. Available in automatic transmission only with all-wheel drive, the sleek system features a drift-worthy rear-wheel drive mode.
Regardless of body style or power delivery, the M4 is a great catch, and its ride is remarkably great when headhunting isn’t part of your daily commute. We wish BMW gave it analog gauges instead of the decipherable digital gauges, and we’d rather have fewer adjustable drive-mode settings, but overall, the 2022 M4 is one of the fun coupes to drive, and that’s what matters.

Mercedes AMG C43

These two-door C43 models come standard with a 385-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 that delivers great power and great sound. All-wheel drive comes standard, and the C43’s handling is extremely sharp. Unfortunately, the same can be said about the ride quality, which can be meandering on rough stretches.
Like most cars with sporting intentions, the C43 requires you to take the good with the bad. The cabin is elegant, well-appointed and comfortable for front seat passengers, but those who land in the back may need head and legroom. Likewise with boot space, which is just average. The current crop is likely to be the last for this generation, as the C-Class has been redesigned for 2022, meaning an AMG-tuned variant is on its way to replacing the C43 with something more modern, and hopefully fun to drive.

With superior driving characteristics and impressive twin-turbo flat-six engines, the 2022 Porsche 911 is an almost impeccable sports car, the clear winner in our selection of the best coupes. Aside from being pricey for most enthusiasts, Porsche’s popular two-seater plus two-seater is as immersive as it is versatile. Together with the flat six.
The engine produces a distinctive snarl and delivers between 379 and 473 horsepower – we review the higher-powered GT3 and Turbo variants separately – The lineup offers quick-shifting automatic or manual dual-clutch transmissions, and is either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The latter ensures that its impressive performance can be enjoyed in all four seasons.
The 911 comes in coupe, cabriolet, or Targa semi-convertible body styles. The beauty of the 911 is that its sporty style does not diminish its livability. The ride is surprisingly good considering the cornering edges, and the driving feel like a racing car. Inside, it looks spacious from the front and can be lavishly equipped. Its driver is handled in a satisfactory low seating position, but also with excellent outward visibility.
Porsche 911 Turbo
With its familiar and refined coupe and cabriolet styling, the 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S are the pinnacle of the most respected dashboard. At its heart is a 3.7-liter flat-six 6-liter twin-turbo engine that makes 573 horsepower in the Turbo and 640 horsepower in the Turbo S. Combined with the spine’s yawning at stratospheric rpm, the engine delivers its bites to the wheels.

We wish there was a manual option, and although we found the sportier suspension setup too stiff, the 2022 911 Turbo and Turbo S deliver a great driving experience that even some exotic supercars can’t replicate. This helps it earn a place in the list of the best coupes for 2022.
Porsche 911 GT3
With an exclusive naturally aspirated engine and racing-inspired components, the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is optimized for driver engagement and race day glory. Porsche’s most daring variant of the 911 boasts front control arm suspension – a first in a 911 on the road – and an unusual rear spoiler mounted on top instead of at the bottom.
The GT3 is also the only 911 non-turbocharged, and the responsive nature and immersive sounds of the 502-horsepower 4.0-liter flat-six are inspiring. The peculiarity of this rear-mounted mill is further achieved by the seven-speed PDK automatic transmission or the six-speed manual transmission.
