There are big cars, there are really big cars, and then there’s the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Measuring 5.2 meters in length and 2.0 meters in width, this behemoth is designed to comfortably seat seven people and is the flagship of Mercedes’ extensive SUV range – think of an S-Class SUV.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS debuted in 2006 as a large SUV with the most dynamism and life. And it imposed itself with its almost truck-like personality, and throughout its history the Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a strict and final Teutonic look, always wearing the mantle of a luxury sports car, and quickly progressed with confident steps to reach the third generation that Mercedes-Benz presented to us under the name Mercedes-Benz GLS for 2022.

The largest German manufacturer has developed the GLS to give us a more attractive version this year, but it is more friendly than its previous version. The 2022 model was redesigned and offered to buyers in 2020, and the same 2022 model continues with only minor changes.

As far as competitors are concerned, the GLS is conceptually closest to the BMW X7 with its 5.1 metres. However, as a potential buyer, you might also want to consider (a little bit) smaller seven-seaters like the Audi Q7, Land Rover Discovery and Volvo XC90, or if you only need five, Range Rover is for you and is a full-on.

Mercedes-Benz GLS design

The Mercedes-Benz GLS offers an ultra-smooth design and streamlined body unless buyers consider switching to an ultra-luxury Maybach, in which case things go from vanilla to lively.

Although not as distinctive as some of its more leading competitors, the design of the GLS manages to remain within the Mercedes-Benz design language while not offending or provoking its target audience. This is even more evident in the visually more aggressive AMG GLS 63.

Interior

The Mercedes-Benz GLS design cabin can be described as nothing less than an ultra-luxury cabin, combining sophistication with technology and comfort with veneer accents that offset the dreary interior of the GLS, providing a splash of texture that surrounds you and the 12.3-inch dual digital screens. The screens at least provide clear graphics and intuitive functionality.

From the moment you open the doors to enter the GLS, you’ll notice the refined trimmings indicating that it has evolved into a more taut and elevated version of the S-Class luxury sedan than embracing its utilitarian leanings. On the one hand, the $77,950 GLS 450 4Matic offers a fun and comfortable space for 6 or 7 passengers.

And when you sit inside it you are sitting very high in your Mercedes GLS, giving you a great view of the road ahead. Plus, the driver’s seat electrically adjusts in every way to help you feel comfortable, and the standard 360-degree camera makes the GLS easier to maneuver in tight spaces with more performance than you might expect.

On top of all this, the interior has an even more wow factor than the BMW X7, thanks to two 12.3-inch glass-fronted screens that sit side by side to create a panoramic effect. Most functions are operated by swiping and pressing either the left screen or the touchpad between the front seats.

The GLS’ infotainment screen is also more responsive than you’ll find on the Q7 and the XC90, and unlike those cars, it has traditional climate controls that can be operated via physical buttons without taking your eyes off the road. Plus, 64-color luxurious ambient lighting as per your choice.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS infotainment system is impressive. The menus are laid out logically, and you can also use the “Hey Mercedes” voice control system, which recognizes natural speech so the car does not need to learn specific commands. It comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Plus a good amount of standard equipment. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic, on the other hand, starts at $161,550 and offers ultra-luxury features like jet-look rear seats, a refrigerator, and advanced two-tone paint finishes.

And despite the presence of metallic details, real wood and leather trim, the interior doesn’t look as solid as an X7 or an Audi Q7. The air-conditioning control panel on the GLS’ dashboard looks particularly flimsy, and some of the hard plastics and scratches on the doors are not expected of a luxury SUV.

Mercedes-Benz GLS performance

GLS performance ranges from the proper performance of the GLS 450 to the exceptional performance of the GLS 63 AMG. And somewhere within the GLS lineup, there’s a cool spot for nearly every driver.

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a very heavy vehicle, tipping the scales at about two and a half tons. But thanks to the huge amount of thrust generated by the 3.0-liter diesel engine, it reaches speeds effortlessly; Its dash will cover 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds (recorded on our test track). 4 seconds more than the acceleration of the BMW X7 xDrive40d.

As with the X7, there can be a slight delay before the automatic gearbox in the GLS responds when you request a sudden burst of acceleration. But GLS transitions are appropriately smooth most of the time.

The engine’s refinement is also impressive; In fact, it’s easy to forget that you have a diesel engine under the hood. Although the tires are large and generate little road noise, the sound will not reach you and the well-controlled wind noise will not.

But I notice that it’s the way the car drives and its handles are disappointing. No matter which air suspension mode you choose, the GLS tends to wobble like jelly on the spindles, which is especially bad news for any travel sickness-prone owner. Moreover, it does not glide well over bumps and potholes. The rival X7 offers a more comfortable and controlled ride, and the X7 is also better at hiding its bulk in corners, and combines superior body control with more precise steering.

Comfort and convenience

Seats, passengers and cargo space

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is generally comfortable, as it combines all-wheel drive with advanced infotainment features and ample space.

And there are plenty of spaces for front passengers in the Mercedes GLS. On top of that, the second row allows three adults to sit comfortably side by side, there’s little risk of their knees cleaning the seats in front, and headroom is great even though the GLS features a standard panoramic sunroof.

The Mercedes GLS also gives third-row passengers easier access and more knee room than they get in an Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90, although six-footers will still want to encourage those passengers in the second row to move their seats forward a bit. But no matter which seat you sit in, you’ll enjoy plenty of space as if you were in a spacious, cavernous BMW X7.

With all seven seats in place, there’s still 355 liters of boot space, which is roughly the same as the storage space in a Volkswagen Golf. And when the sixth and seventh seats electrically fold flat in the boot floor (again, this function is standard), there’s easily enough space for all the bags you’ll likely want to carry.

Engine options for the Mercedes-Benz GLS

Currently, there is only one engine on offer for the base GLS: a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel with the 400d badge. However, there is the performance-focused Mercedes GLS 63 with a 4.0-liter V8 designed to outlast the powerful X7 M50i, while the ultra-luxury Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 (which also features the same V8) and the same engine tows the Bentayga Bentayga and Rolls Royce Cullinan.

No matter which trim levels you choose, you’ll get a nine-speed automatic gearbox, all-wheel drive and air suspension as standard. In addition, Mercedes also offers semi-autonomous technology to make driving easier and help keep you safe . And you can pair your GLS with the Off-Road package if you want to get off the beaten track and into a unique car.

Reliability, safety and security in the Mercedes-Benz GLS

Although not tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, the GLS’s prolific safety features and solid construction mean it should protect its occupants well in the event of an accident. Standard safety features include forward collision warning, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic warning and automatic emergency braking.

Mercedes’s Pre-Safe system tightens seat belts, adjusts head restraints and closes windows in seconds when the system anticipates a collision via information gathered from several sensors. Newer versions make a loud noise, stimulating the inner ear to protect your hearing from the pressure of the shock.

The all-new GLS has proven solidly in reliability, in the reliability survey Mercedes ranked 26th out of 31 manufacturers – behind BMW (9), Volvo (16) and Audi (22), but ahead of Land Rover (which finished last).

GLS . fuel economy

While every GLS is powered by Mercedes-Benz’s EQ Boost technology and system that uses mild-hybridization to aid performance and fuel economy, their heft results in relatively low combined EPA-tested fuel economy figures of 21 combined mpg, and on the GLS450 the fuel economy increases to less than 16 mpg, and there is an AMG model called the GLS63.

All GLS models now feature Mercedes-Benz’s seamless EQ Boost system, which uses an electric motor to add power, increase fuel economy and reduce emissions. The setup also uses an integrated starter alternator to enable the nearly imperceptible engine start/stop functions, engine off coasting to save fuel, and power regeneration while idling.


Prices and operating cost

The Mercedes GLS is expensive even by luxury SUV standards (the Land Rover Discovery will sit quite comfortably for less money, and if you only need five seats, the Audi Q7 is much cheaper and much, much better). Although it is not more expensive than the BMW X7 xDrive40d but there are big discounts, be sure to reach for it, but the X7 is the best buy, as it is more fun to drive, more comfortable and more spacious.

However, the Mercedes GLS gives you plenty of equipment for your money in the GLS. Even the entry-level AMG Line Premium, although first in the lineup, features keyless entry and start, heated front and second row seats, 22-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and a head-up display that projects key information onto the windshield to reduce the need to take your eyes off the road (Not standard on X7).

And you might be tempted to switch to the AMG Line Premium Plus design because this model offers massage seats, heated armrests and semi-autonomous driving technology designed to take the stress out of driving when it comes to adjusting speed, steering, changing lanes, braking or getting out of traffic jams. You’ll find that the Premium Plus Executive gets a few other luxuries, like a heated steering wheel, Nappa leather-wrapped dashboard and heated third-row seats, but we don’t think it’s worth the extra expense.

It’s no surprise that the GLS is at the top of the car tax bracket and at the same time, it’s not as economical as the diesel engines in either its Q7 or X7
