Electra Meccanica Vehicles Corp. is a Vancouver-based vehicle designer and manufacturer that has recently taken the leap into the global electric vehicle manufacturing space. The company released its first major product called SOLO, an all-electric single-seater, single-seater and three-wheeler that hit the assembly line in the fall of 2020.

Electra Meccanica Solo Specifications and speed

The Solo EV has a range of 100 miles, powered by a 17.3 kWh NCA liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, and a top speed of 80 mph, assuring its safe highway driving. It also packs 103 ft lbs. of torque, and has a 53-horsepower electric motor and a rear-wheel drive system capable of propulsion from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds.

If you have a Level 2, 220V home charger, the Solo EV will charge exceptionally fast, with a universal J1772 connector compatible with global charging stations, a low-cost charging station can be installed in your personal residence. A full charge takes approximately four hours, but an overnight charge (8 hours) is recommended for a typical 110V charger.

Although the Electra Meccanica Solo is technically classified as a motorcycle, it has a slick grille precisely mounted on a set of 15-inch wheels, flanked by stylish LED headlights. The single-seat high-vision cockpit can be accessed through two doors on each side, which means you can park in tight spots and easily exit and get into the car, and it’s fitted with a single wheel size 215-40 R16 at the rear.

Inside, Electra Meccanica Solo offers a full LCD digital instrument cluster, rear view camera, 4-way adjustable heated seat, climate control and defogger, Bluetooth digital stereo system, and remote keyless entry. The fully enclosed cabin with steering wheel and foot pedals retains the feel of a regular passenger car we are all used to but for just one passenger.

Driver safety

As far as safety is concerned, the Solo EV is equipped with triple-level side impact protection on both sides and a roll bar to keep the driver safe in the event of a collision. EV engineers also considered using Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a computerized technology that improves vehicle stability by detecting and reducing traction loss when making tight corners at high speed.

This means that braking is automatically applied to the wheels individually to counteract excessive cornering and understeer, thus reducing the chances of the driver losing control of the vehicle. The Solo EV undoubtedly proves to be safer, more reliable and weatherproof than a two-wheeled motorcycle.

The Solo has responsive 15-inch front wheels with 135-70 R15 tires, wide steering geometry at the front, electric disc brakes, and delivers an impressive turning radius considering it’s powered by three wheels. Combined with the electronic steering system, the Solo is able to comfortably maneuver in tight spaces, making it remarkably easier to park compared to a four-wheeled passenger car.

With a height of 53 inches, the Solo EV offers a relatively low seating position, giving it a sporty feel and a low center of gravity that contributes significantly to its stability. It runs smoothly on the highway, and the build is absolutely commendable for a three-wheeler.

The Solo EV also has a unique feel in the fact that the 180-degree view from the Solo’s single-seater cabin is great because you have a clear view all around the vehicle. Moreover, with the help of electric mirrors and a rear-view camera, the car has minimal blind spots. The Solo also comes with a five-cubic-foot stowage box and a carpeted stowage compartment under the hood, which is a lot more storage space compared to what a motorbike on wheels has to offer.

2022 Efficiency Electra Meccanica Solo

As unconventional as it may sound, a single-seat EV makes a lot of sense in the real world. Most drivers on the road in regular passenger cars tend to do personal tasks and drive alone, and the four-seater cabin is a little extra for a single passenger. This cumulatively increases the number of vehicles on the road and results in traffic congestion.

With the Solo EV, the vehicle is just 10 feet long, and it’s everything you need to drive on your own. Do the math, and the benefits will be enormous for both the ecosystem and the traffic flow. The vehicle’s maintenance is also surprisingly low considering it has 99% fewer parts than an internal combustion engine vehicle, which reduces the chances of the vehicle breaking down and thus saves you money. The Solo EV also boosts the zero carbon footprint since it’s an all-electric vehicle; It does not emit non-combustible gases into the atmosphere.
